IRC A-Z
- ban. An Op can ban a user from #star-fleet. If you attempt to join a channel that you have been banned from, you will be either kicked out immediately, or on some servers unable to rejoin the channel at all until the ban is lifted. If you are banned whilst in the channel this usually has the affect of prohibiting you from sending messages to the channel in question, until the ban is lifted. A ban is identified as a mode +b change.
- Chanserv. This is a service provided on some IRC networks. It allows you to register a channel, and will then store certain options like a list of Ops, and certain settings like keeping a channel topic and a list of banned individuals.
- flood. This is when a user sends several lines to #star-fleet within a short period of time. Floods that exceed 6 lines usually result in an instant kick from an Op
- ghost. Sometimes when you have been disconnected from the server, either due to a netsplit, ping or peer; when you return you may find that your nick is still in use, and the culprit is you! With a little help from nickserv, you can use the ghost command to kill this "ghost" and allow yourself to reclaim your nick.
/msg nickserv ghost nick password - ignore. Most IRC programs have a command that will stop you seeing what a certain person is typing. This is usually achieved by using the command:
/ignore nick - kick. An Op can kick users from #star-fleet. Basically this is just a way of removing you from the channel, but usually has a good reason behind it and generally is for breaking our channel rules.
- lag. This is the time it takes a signal from you to reach another user. When everything is running as it should be, this should be almost instantaneous, but delays can happen. Anything less than 2 or so seconds is acceptable, anything greater and it's annoying. You can check your lag status with a Ping command:
/ctcp nick ping - Memoserv. This is another service provided on IRC networks. Once you have registered your nick with Nickserv, this gives you the ability to send messages to other registered users, whether they are online or not. They are stored in a kind of inbox, and that user will be notified they have new mail when they next connect to the server.
- netsplit. This is usually when two IRC servers have lost touch with each other, and the network is literally split in two, both behaving as seperate entities. These usually reconnect after a short period.
- nick. This is your nickname or screenname for IRC. It can usually be whatever you want, but must not contain spaces, and depending on the server can be limited in length. You also can't use a nick someone else is using, and some nicks may already be registered with Nickserv - all this means is you have to pick another.
- Nickserv. This is another service provided on IRC networks. It allows you to register your nick, so that no-one baring you can use it. You also need to have a registered nick before you can be an Op
