Channel Operators
Ops can be identified by the @ at the front of their nick. They are also positioned at the top of the nick list. It is their job to enforce the rules and ensure that the channel operates smoothly. They have the capability to remove users from the room if rules are broken. Please accept the actions of the channel operators and treat their decisions with respect.
The club President, Vice President and the Internet Director are always channel operators. As Sorcery is a public server, these individuals may enlist the help of temporary or Auto-Ops to help maintain the channel. The aim is to have at least one active Op in the room at any given time. Temporary Ops should only be granted to people who have shown maturity in the channel and an ability to abide by and follow the rules. Being chosen as a Temporary Op may later lead to a more permanent position, should an opening occur.

Channel Operator Rules
An OP is a position of trust, as well as one to help other channel users. Using the OP status to abuse, harass and annoy other users will NOT be tolerated, and will not see you retaining that status for very long. Ops also need to know, understand, follow and enforce the rules laid down for the channel in IRC rule pages. Most of all it involves using common sense to maintain a fairly peaceful and friendly environment for the enjoyment of the other users.
An OP needs to be able to use good judgement when dealing with incidents in IRC. Most incidents can be dealt with a friendly warning to cease and desist. Issuing a user with a ban not only prevents them from rejoining (should they later be kicked or leave voluntarily) the channel, it is also a useful method of 'de-voicing'. The offending user will be unable to talk in the main room, and is a useful tool in quelling unruly and sometimes disruptive people, but should be used with care. A kick should be used only when all other methods have been tried and failed, and as a last resort. If the user continue their behaviour, it may be necessary to ban +kick the user, thus denying them the ability to rejoin the channel.
Channel Operators are expected to:
- Enforce all channel rules.
- Maintain order and civility in the channel.
- Encourage a fun, safe environment for all users.
- Follow directions from Internet Department staff.
- Report any complaints and problems to the Internet Department staff.
- Attempt to resolve problems through discussion before kicking, and through kicking before banning. All akicks (i.e., permanant bans) will only be set after an investigation by the Internet Department.
- Prevent others from using their operator status. This means making all reasonable efforts to keep NickServ passwords secret and shutting down IRC when others use their computer. This means no idling from a public terminal or on a shared computer.
- Appoint a temporary op when leaving the room, if no other ops are present or active.
