How to use this template
On a web page
To create web pages using this template, simply save a copy of this page to your local computer. (Go to the File menu and select Save or Save As, depending on your browser.) Then open the file you saved in your favorite text editor. Do not use a graphical editor like Microsoft Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver if you can avoid it.
In the file you will see inline comments that will guide you through customizing the page to your needs. For the most part you will just need to "fill in the blanks" where told to do so. All the styling information is handled automatically.
Once you have the file edited to suit your needs, e-mail it to upload@star-fleet.com. Be sure to give the file the name it should have on the server, include exactly where on the server it should go, whether or not it's replacing an existing file, and any other useful information. We'd rather you tell us too much than too little.
That's all there is to it. Not only is it easy, but if the standard format for STF pages ever changes, your web pages will be updated auto-magically!
On a MOTD
If you want to use the standard template for a MOTD, please do not just use this web page. MOTDs are not full web pages, so treating them like one can cause problems and break things. The Internet Department has prepared a special MOTD template version. Please use that instead.
Why a standard template?
Why does the Internet Department have a standard template? There are many reasons.
- People who aren't skilled at web development have a simple "fill in the blank" way of getting an attractive page for their ship or fleet without having to learn most of the complexities of web design.
- By using a common style and layout site-wide, it gives STF a more clean, professional appearance. That's very important for attracting new members.
- Having a common look-and-feel site-wide makes it easier to find information. People viewing the site always know where to look for navigation information, for instance, or where to find the e-mail address of the Department Director or CO.
- Because the template separates out most of the presentation into a centralized file, most changes to the global template can automatically affect most pages on the site. That makes it easier for COs to keep a professional look without having to do much work.
Although it is highly recommended that FComms, COs, and Department Directors use the standard template for their web sites for the reasons above, it is not required. If the IDept ever has to update a page because it is out of date or because it is asked to, however, it will use the common template in order to both make the IDept's job easier and to keep the site clean and attractive.
