Jeff Field resigns

FComm: 'STF no longer enjoyable'
IRC, "CYBERSPACE" -- Commodore Jeff Field announced Thursday March 19 during an IRC Chat Meet that he was resigning from STF, effective immediately.  Jeff had already been on approved Leave Of Absence for several weeks, while he considered his options.  Although Jeff was unavailable for comment personally, STF President Greg Hertzsch reported that "[Jeff] took an approved LOA at first because he said it got to where he was going to the WeBB because he had to, not because he wanted to."  Hertzsch also reported that "he also had been having some school problems.  He had to raise his grades up or else quit STF.  That was also a factor."  Jeff had previously spoken wihth Hertzsch about the possibility of him resigning and had made it clear that he wanted Colin Wyers to succeed him as FComm-4.  Hertzsch appointed Wyers as new FComm-4 that same night.  Wyers has yet to choose a new AFComm.

Former crewmates in denial
T7 -- Jeff Field's resignation has met with the largest public outcry since Blue Jell-O trounced Green Jell-O in last year's heavily-gambled-upon Dessert Bowl XXXII.  The initial response in IRC when Jeff made his announcement was one of shock.  "I'm going to miss Jeff," said Fleet Four officer Deanne Morgan.  "He's the first to give me a chance in the Fleet."  "Jeff's confidence in me is what allowed me to go as far as I have," added Larry Garfield, who served as Jeff's CE on the USS Montgomery and was later given command of the USS Alliance.  It is clear that Jeff will be sorely missed.  STF Command is certainly holding a spot open for the once-omnipresent flag officer; "Jeff is always welcome to come back should he so desire," STF President Greg Hertzsch commented.  In a final tribute to Jeff, the WeBBsights Editorial Staff has prepared a farewell song in his honor.  Be sure to read, and soon hear, Jeffrey Field's Lonely Hearts Club Fleet, in stores now.

Personality Focus: Mandie Brite, Reluctant Officer
PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- There are many ways for someone to join STF.  One of the most common is drafting: whenever the population drops, some loyal officer -- such as B.J. Phillips -- manages to draft a friend or acquaintance into the club.  That is what happend to Mandie Brite, a long-distance friend of B.J.  B.J. drafted her into STF back in August of 1997, but she left when school started in September, claiming that she didn't have the time for STF.  When her homework load dropped back to a manageable level in December she rejoined, and currently serves as Rebecca Cadogan on the USS Athena in Fleet Three.

Mandie, 14, is in the 8th grade at Oasis High School in Phoenix, Arizona.  She considers her age to be a severe handicap, as it associates her with "teenybopperism."  She also is currently conducting an investigation as to why her school (located in the Desert State) has a team called the Dolphins.  She has been involved in computers since she was five and claims to be able top run rings around her programmer father, and enjoys criticizing sarcastic media [Sarcastic, eh? I don't know about any sarcastic media. . . . --Ed.].

STF 'sex scandal' turns out to be security hole
USS COLUMBUS, FLEET FOUR -- Recent events on the USS Columbus have demonstrated a security problem on the WeBB.  During an off-duty scene, sexually offensive material was posted under the name of Jerry Phelps, containing activites unbecoming an officer (The entire thread was deleted, so don't even bother looking).  CO Matt Agee immediately recommended to STF President Gerg Hertzsch that Phelps be demoted and reassigned.  Hertzsch, however decided to carry out the transfer only.  Further investigation, however, revealed that Phelps had been out of town at the time the post was made, and a co-worker of his at his office had gained access to his workstation and begun to order merchandise over the Internet with Phelps' credit card, commit other rather illegal acts, and post this (and other) faux-Phelps messages and emails.  The individual in question was quickly terminated from the company.  Phelps has been exonerated, and Agee and Deanne Morgan, the victim of the post, have eagerly agreed to allow Phelps back onto the Columbus.  President Hertzsch has asked that all officers self-censor their posts at an "R" rating; others suggest a "PG-13" limit.  Concerns about security have also been raised, as WeBB designer Mike Bourdaa is currently exploring the possibility of using a cookie system in place of the current login method.

Fleet Five goes active
STARBASE 257, FLEET FIVE -- STF's Fifth Fleet, our second-in-a-row unprecedented WeBB fleet, has officially begun to RPG.  FComm-5 B.J. Phillips of the USS Olympic and AFComm-5 Larry Garfield of the USS Alliance have assumed command of the new fleet, and Captain Randy McCullick has been given command of the newly-recomissioned USS Andorian.  Fleet Five is located in the Alpha Quadrant, slightly above the galactic plane, and some crewmembers are already nicknaming it the "Zenith Fleet."  Starbase 257 will remain NPC for the time being.  There are as of yet no plans to add additional ships to the new fleet, however, it is likely to expand in the near future.

Trivia Answers
SNN CENTER, CHICAGO -- Our prestigious "Wow!  He actually Responded" Award goes to Matt Agee this week, for being the only person with the guts to respond.  Never mind the fact that he got only one question right.  The correct answers were:

  1. The Dreadnought Entente was mentioned in comm trafic from Epislon 9 in Star Trek:  The Motion Picture.
  2. Outpost 42 has been commanded by Paula Kirk ever since it was opened.  It is the only Fleet Three ship to have had the same CO since then.
  3. New Fleet Five FComm B.J. Phillips is the oldest WeBBster who has never served on STF*Prodigy.  He joined STF on August 4, 1997, only four days after the WeBB opened.
  4. The USS Ares was initially commissioned the USS Concorde.  Its name was changed before it began its first mission.  The name Concorde was later used for the NPC ship the crew of the USS Montgomery salvaged and used to destroy Deep Space 19 to keep it out of Crag hands.  It was later recomissioned the USS Concorde-B, now serving in Fleet Three under the command of Jean Flinois.

  • WeBB Co-PDir BJ Phillips has announced that he will allow COs to handle all secondary character requests themselves.  This includes primary characters and controlled NPC characters.  Phillips will contine to handle all new-member requests.
  • Although Spring officially started only a few days ago, BIO Tallen and Eng-1 Hawkins of Outpost 42 have started a rather interesting relationship.  Though not as far as the recent marriage yet, there is potential for a long and happy relationship.  Further developments have been delayed due to the constant chaos that has wracked the station in recent weeks.
  • Crell, homeworld of the Crag, has now been officially admitted to the Federation.  Everyone is encouraged to read the speech made by Alliance Captain William Bligh during the ceremonies, as well as the Crell Planetary Anthem.  (They're both a lot of fun.)  As it is now a full member of the Federation, Crell Prime Minister Daltuak has decreed that shore leave has been extended to all Starfleet officers.  Captain Larry Garfield, Crell Administrator, is encouraging all STFers to contact him to have their characters mirrored on Crell, which will be serving as an Open-RPG area for anyone who stops by.

    STF*Prodigy News-in-Brief
SNN CENTER, CHICAGO -- In a heartwarming show of sympathy for Commodore Field's resignation, the combined cast and crew of STF*Prodigy observed a one-week Moment of Silence. Fortunately, they got a head start before Field actually resigned, so we ought to get back to RPing any day now. . . .

Fleet Three -- The Coreward Fleet
    by Seamus Hughes

  • USS Athena, NCC-71819: Welcome!  Come one, come all to the slowest ship in the Fleet. When we last left the Athena, it was off in the Sol system, trying to capture the Olympic.  Well, that didn't work.  The Oly destroyed the USS Quebec, and then the Athena decided, in retaliation, to do nothing. Great tactic, guys! While this was going on, CSO Gavin Bishop and Med-1 Lt. Henry Tudor began to be fed up with the nothingness of the Athena and after having a long "arugement" with Captain Phillips, took a runabout and drifted away into space. Another great plan, by the ingenious crew of the USS Athena [Well, someone woke up on the wrong side of the sleep unit this morning! --Ed.].

  •
  • USS Concorde, NCC-97123-B:  Gee, not much to say about this ship . . . the Concorde was en-route for Earth with two cloaked Romulan ships when it was attacked by Tartikov fleet of cloaked ships.  The Concorde has yet to fire back, or even raise shields, but they're not worried, since Colin's not there GM.

  •
  • USS Dresden, NCC-1837-B: Viruses? Half-brothers? This is worse than the FOX Network.  On the Dresden, while en-route to help the Concorde, some of the crew suddenly got a diease that made them change their physical features, and a security officer who used to be a human was turned into a Cardassian.  What this has to do with the Fleet-wide RPG is still unknown. Also, it seems the Dresden is full of half-brothers and sisters. All of the Security officers are related somehow, which leaves us at WeBBsights to ask . . . West Virginia?

  •
  • USS Hopper, NCC-78333:  New name? Oh yes, and a new ship class. The USS Boston last week fired on the USS Hopper, the mysterious Independence-class ship.  After crippling it servely, Captain Hughes decided that "Hey! why have a Traf when you can have a ship that cloaks?"  He and his crew transported aboard the Hopper, and blew up the Boston (scratch 2 Trafs and two Captains). After getting the Hopper back together again, they proceeded to Earth where Captain Hughes stated that he wanted to know just what the hell was going on, and why he wasn't invited to the party.  The Hopper is currently aiming weapons at the Athena and waiting for a response as to why there aren't enough drinks for everyone.

  • Outpost 42: Despite the fact that Commodore Kavox Cox did not dock at the station, Task Force Tango, under the command of Lt. Andrew Patrell, has insisted that BCO Paula Kirk stand down and be boarded.  Patrell has also ordered that any ship entering or leaving the area is to be destroyed on sight.  Meanwhile, further disaster has struck, in the form of the sabotage and explosion of the USS Terra Nova during docking procedures.  The plot has thickened even more, not surprisingly, with the revelation by SNN Correspondent Elliot Carver that William Garner, the head of Starfleet Intelligence, was assassinated several weeks ago, around the time of the assassination of late President Fred Perch.  BIO Tallen suspected that James Perry would likely be his sucessor, at the time unaware that Perry had recently died on board the USS Boston.  Additional investigation has also revealed Federation President Stadt was being held in Moscow on Earth (No, not at Nyetscape, they already have a contract).  The apparent President on the station has also been determined to be an imposter, however, no action has been taken as of yet.

  • USS Ares, NCC-finished-a-mission-but-still-doesn't-have-a-registry: Everyone, let's give the crew of the USS Ares a big round of applause for finishing what was probably the longest running RPG in STF history! After diverting all power to engines, the Ares has finally gotten out of the Anomaly, ahead of the alien ships. The CO and the CSO were quickly placed in sickbay and were sedated; the ships fired an aft torpedo, and destabilized the anomaly, but not before half of one of the pursuing ships go through . . . with predictable results. The crew has retired to rest and recuperate. They are just waking up (which they'll probably be doing for the next two weeks!)

  • USS Columbus, NX-97000:  Further investigation has revealed that the Columbus now exists in two different dimensions at once, the normal dimension we all know and love and a different one in which a Klingon-Romulan Alliance is at war with a rebel Earth.  To make things even more confusing, some crewmembers are in "our" dimension, some are in the alternate, and some are in both.  In the alternate dimension, the crew was approached by the alternate Captain Jeff Field and are asked to help the rebel Earth ships beat the Klingon-Romulan ships. After a staff debate where the Prime Directive was brought up and abolished, they accepted, as any good Starfleet officer would do.  Repairing their ship, they prepared for battle. The "real" Columbus made an attempt to return things to some sense of normality, or at least sanity, but managed to have their magical device blow up in their faces instead.  Back in the alternate dimension, preparations were made to attack the 30-odd ships of the Alliance. A fighter was loaded with high explosives, and the saucer and battle sections were separated (Insert tension-building music here).

  • USS Montgomery, NCC-84704: It has been revealed that Dr. Humphreys was, in fact, not defecting to Delmaron's side but was attempting to infiltrate his clique to break it from the inside.  Meanwhile, renegade Captain Jacob Delmaron ordered the Romulan ships to break off their escort, allowing the loyal crew, who was by this point in control of the computer system, to seize the ship in a direct attack on the Bridge.  Delmaron was killed, but before he died he managed to rig the antimatter inducers to jam open, resulting in an instability which almost destroyed the ship.  Quick action on the part of CE Murri Kep, his pet python, Monty, and the Engineering NEs was able to avert disaster by blowing the lower deck of the ship off into space, taking the antimatter with it.  The Montgomery is currently being towed back to Deep Space 20, which has fresh parts standing by, as it expected something like this to happen.  (Track record update:  3 Bridges, 1 Ready Room, 1 Aux Control Room, 1 crash landing, 1 warp core, 1 Observation Lounge, 2 nacelles, 1 deck 14, 1 pair of fuzzy dice, one Chief Engineer's sanity, and a partridge in a pear tree.)

  • IKS chunDab:  After the party (last issue), the crew of the chunDab began to "acclimate" themselves to their new human Doctor, the last one now being the Captain. During the Party a Klingon Named Kahless turned the ship towards the planet of Tychon. The ship achieved standard orbit before anything could be done.  The president of Tychon opened hailing frequencies and ordered the chunDab to leave his planet's air space.  The president also ordered his entire fleet to attack the chunDab. The captain then ordered that some of the antimatter be ejected into space and a course set for Quo'nos.  The antimatter dump was successful and a torpedo was fired into the dump causing one BIG explosion. The chunDab then acclerated for home leaving the Planet of Tychon in a horrible mess. Kahless, being cornered for starting the mess, revealed he had a disease and blew himself out an airlock, leaving cyanide cheese crackers for the crew.

  • (special thanks to Jason Becker [Ensign Xebus Du'Chok] for helping me weed through the chunDab notes!)

  • Starbase 202:  The crew has come to the realization that nearly everyone on board is missing. CMO Matt Agee, upon return to the station, has borrowed a EMH from the Indy and is treating a survivor on board.  The tests on the Endeavor's hull revealed nothing, to the dismay of Haley. Counselor Benni and Agee planned a diner together, but Benni was stood up. Later, while walking the decks, she discovered that Agee had actually passed out. Taking him to the EMH, she manageed to save his life . . . barely. While the EMH operateed, Benni was comforted by Ty.  Several decks and a few bottles of hooch later, while on the bridge, she witnessed two Romulan warbirds decloaking.  The station was hailed by a Prefect Rekolok, who accused them of destroying the warbird, and stealing the shuttle. Demanding the right to take a prisoner, they beamed Captain McKee aboard, forgetting momentarily that McKee wasn't on the station as he had left with the Independence some time ago. Before anyone could point this out to the Romulans, Agee woke up from his recuperation and he and Benni finally had dinner.
  • Fleet Five -- The Zenith Fleet
    by Larry Garfield

  • USS Alliance, NCC-82396-A: The Alliance crew managed to return from the Seetha ship.  They even managed to beam the Seetha crew aboard before the ship exploded.  Returning to Crell, the crew recieved word that the admission process had been nearly completed and that the ceremonies were almost ready.   Captain William Bligh, the keynote speaker, made a moving speech to the assembled delegates and formally signed the treaty.  Unfortunately, the first item of business was to investigate the assassination of Ambassador Ralf, who was killed by an Alliance Sec-66 as the ceremonies completed.  It was discovered that the Ensign, Forn, was actually yet another Seetha spy.  With that settled, the Alliance left the Crag Annexation for Fleet Five, where it was to take over as the lead diplomatic vessel of the region.  Stopping on the way at the Arbuckle Ship Yards at Zeta Maxtor III to be upgraded into an Aurora-class vessel, eh, NCC-82396-A, the Alliance is commencing First Contact procedures with the planet Tttic, beginning with an undercover investigation of the political situation, eh?

  •
  • USS Andorian, NCC-2019-D: Captain McCullick arrived on the ship with Ensigns. Slowly, the crew began arriving.  Nick Bolar and the Engineering crew begin putting the scarred warship back together again, as the new crew got settled in and waited for orders. Finally, orders arrived, and the Andorian pulled out. During this time, the Engineering was most active fixing numerous systems, removing a tribble infestation, and sending slime to Science for analysis. Nick Bolar was revealed to be an android.  The Andorian was finally assigned to escort the USS Addison and the USS Wesley, formerly destroyed by the USS Montgomery under the command of renegade Captain Jacob Delmaron, to the planet T'Bete to help with a plague on the planet. Off duty, many of the officers are noticing a similar hobby: antique sword collecting and use, and a possible off-duty romance is blossoming between Chief Nurse Sesenta Nyan and Ensign Scurvy. The rest of the crew passed the time by arguing with the ship's AI system, the Professor (the only Starfleet AI system not designed by Nyetscape; also used on the USS Ark Angel in Fleet One), and sharing a few drinks.  Finally, the Andorian arrived at the planet, only to get waved off by the planet's goverment, which accused them of spying.  Even attempts to just let the medical ship do their work was refused.  For lack of authority to do otherwise, McCullick ordered the ship back to Federation space at space normal speed.

  • USS Olympic, NX-80000: "Nope, try again" has become the mantra of Olympic GM Owen Ashcroft.  As a result, the ship that won the February Ship of the Month award in Fleet Three has decided to go on strike.  At last report, the Olympic had been infiltrated by someone bia the computer who had attacked and destroyed the USS Quebec, part of the task force led by the USS Athena.  The task force has surrounded the Olympic.  In other news, the Bajoran Ambassador has been rescued from the surface but President Stadt is still in Moscow with XO Jolanne Jaxa.
