The State of the Fleet Report

"Is this really Butte, Montana, or just Existential Blues?" -- Tom 'T-bone' Stankus

Current Fleet Makeup

Currently, the Third Fleet consists of 5 Role Playing areas: USS Athena, USS Brooklyn, USS Dresden, USS Concorde, and Outpost 42.

The ships are all doing well, with friendly rivalries brewing within the fleet, as the fleetwide sim draws toward its end.  We have lost the USS Olympic to STF5, but we'll survive without her.   The Concorde is recovering from a mysterious data loss, but I have high hopes that the ship will return to its previous form soon.

The current COs (in order of the ships as listed above) are Captains Robinson, Hughes, Torres, Maltese, and Kirk.

General Fleet Comments

GM consistancy has improved remarkably recently, however, I still feel that COs and XOs should recieve GM training of some sort, to provide a pool of reserve GMs.  I fear a "GM burnout" may be coming our way soon, and the only way to prevent that is to have an excess of GMs so that they can be rotated out, occasionally getting a 'reprieve' from their duties.

Last report, I complained that the "Terrible Third" had become stagnant -- that is now no longer the case.  Thanks to Seamus Hughes' Post War, and Colin Wyers' fleetwide sim (stimulated nicely by some GM work by Owen Ashcroft and yours truly), activity in the fleet is at an all time high, and the trend looks to continue.  All is well on the Coreward front.

There are still some other problems that I have been dealing with on a case by case basis.  Most of these are actually programming issues, however, and not relevant to the State of the Fleet report.

The proposals to standardize the fleet have completed.  There is no longer any OPS or CONN officers in the Third Fleet (or any other WeBB fleet).  However, the CTO position has become popular on ships that are not traditionally warships - which is not necessarilly a bad thing, but it divides the COS in half.  I will be dealing with this issue on a case by case basis.

With now three active fleets on the WeBB, it becomes even more critical that the three FComm's coordinate their activities and CO/XO suggestions with each other.  I am considering options that would 'officially' enact the so-called "Command Cadre" somehow, in order to ensure the fleets remain somewhat on the same footing.

The Outpost 42 "experiment", as I refered to it last time, is going strong, and there are no longer any concerns on my part about the viability of a starbase-based RPG environment within STF.

Accentuating the Positive

Well, I shouldn't post an official report without giving due credit to some of the people who have worked hard to keep the Third Fleet working, and making STF a better and more active place as a result

Colin Wyers, our GMDir, tops the list this time.  His activity and his input into the RPGs has remained constant, and in fact taken an upswing of late.  He's also recently been filling in for Jeff Field in STF4, and I wouldn't be suprized if that alone brings that 'other' fleet some added activity.  The entire Third Fleet is in ruins, thanks to his GMing, but few people are bored when he's around!  But, those Traf's are getting expensive to replace, Colin. <g>

Franco Torres, who will be taking over the position of Assistant Fleet Commander from BJ Phillips.  He has brought the Dresden back from the dead.  His style is perhaps a bit unorthodox, but it has been sucessful.  His CE, Adam StClair, has also shown great skill and character depth in his writing.

Seamus Hughes, who has matured greatly since his first appearance in STF <g>.  He's become a valued member of the WeBBsights staff, as well as becoming a rising star in STF as a whole.  His methods are probably even more unorthodox than Franco's, but his crew enjoys it.

T'Nira and Eston Freeman:  Well, they're newlyweds, I had to mention that.  Apparently, the first married couple in STF since the Midyette wedding <g>.  They've also been a key part of what makes the Brooklyn what it is.

Owen Ashcroft and Sue 'Jaxa' Isik:  Great RPGers, and they brought the Olympic back from the dead.  I'm gonna hate losing them.  At least they'll still be in the fleet somewhere (Owen as the Concorde XO, and Jaxa on the Brooky)

I apologize to those of you whom I'm omitting in this report -- many more people in the Third have had important contributions to the environment, but its difficult to name everyone in one short report.  But it is mostly those who I have not mentioned who have, collectively, made the "Terrible Third" the greatest fleet in STF history.  Now then, ladies and gentlemen.. we have some work to do.. can't let the Fifth or Fourth catch up to us! <g>
