The State of the Fleet Report

"After all, somethings gotta keep the bureaucrats busy"

Current Fleet Makeup

Currently, the Third Fleet consists of 5 Role Playing areas: USS Athena, USS Brooklyn, USS Dresden, USS Olympic, and Outpost 42.

All CO and XO positions are currently filled, as are most available chief positions.  Those that are open have opened within the last 72 hours at maximum, and are being filled by moving "dash-1's" up into the chief positions as applicable.

Currently, all ships within the fleet are exhibiting moderate activity levels.  I will touch on this point later in this report.  There is definately room for improvement, however, overall, things aren't bad, they're simply not as wonderful as I would personally like them to be.

The current COs (in order of the ships as listed above) are Captains Robinson, Passero, Brak, Cadogan, and Commander Kirk.

Problems to report within the fleet

GM consistancy tops my personal gripes list.  The individual GMs are all wonderful people, and are doing their best to provide quality experiences and scenarios, however, I believe that all the GMs would be well served by recieving additional training and input from both each other, and from the GMD.  I would also like to see all COs and XOs recieve similar training, for several reasons.

It would make them available as GMs should the need arise.
It would give them some extra insight into moving the games along.
And, perhaps most importantly, it would increase overall ship activity, just by their leading by example.

Quite simply, the Terrible Third, as I have started to refer to it as, is becoming stagnant.  The Fallible Fourth,
by comparison, is lively with their heavy platter of battle-oriented RPGs.

I will be discussing plans to increase activity with the new GMDir, the FGM, and any other interested parties, both on IRC and via email in the next two weeks, to come up with exact plans to increase activity fleetwide.

I also have some specific proposals for the GMD that I will be discussing with the GMDir as soon as that person's appointment is official.

There are some other problems that I have been dealing with on a case by case basis.  Most of these are actually programming issues, however, and not relevant to the State of the Fleet report.

The proposals to standardize the fleet have begun to be implemented.  The OPS position is being quietly phased out.  No person who currently holds an OPS position will be asked or forced to leave that post, however, no replacements for the OPS position will be appointed.  The CSO of each ship that has no OPS will act as OPS, since it makes more sence in the sence that this is the way the ships actually work on the show.

Also, Outpost 42 appears to be near the end of their current RPG.  Once that occurs, the experiment will be reanalyzed, and whatever repairs to the system that are needed will be made.

Accentuating the Positive

Well, I shouldn't post an official report without giving due credit to some of the people who have worked hard to keep the Third Fleet working, and making STF a better and more active place as a result

BJ Phillips tops this list.  BJ has been serving as the de-facto Personnel Director for the Third (and now also the Fourth) Fleets for the better part of the last two months.  He has also been given his own ship in that time, the USS Olympic.  He is a major reason for where we are now.  If we had a medal of honor for STF, I'd be first in line to award him with one.

Colin Wyers, the new Assistant Fleet Commander, comes a close second.  His activity and his input into the RPGs has been consistantly solid.  Without him, we would probably have completely lost at least one ship.  And without his skills as a GM, a certain now-Fourth Fleet ship would have had too easy of a time winning. ;-)

Rick Passero has been a solid behind-the-scenes worker for the Third Fleet, keeping track of the GMs in the absence of an active GMDir.  His excellence performance has kept things working with a minimum of problems.   He has done an excellent job in a difficult position, and kept things working with a combination of enthusiasm and efficiency.

Paula Kirk, Sarah Black, and Jennifer Holland:  These three women have been solid and active RPGers, and have sucessfully kept their ships and outposts active and interesting.  Their skills both as leaders and role-players are quite simply excellent, and I am sure that they will continue to be assets to the fleet.

And a general credit to the rest of the Third Fleet membership.  I apoligize that I can't simply write at great length about all of you, even though nearly all of you deserve it.  Congradulations to you all.  Because you are what makes the Third Fleet the greatest Fleet in STF.  Ever.
