The Nimitz-class USS Alliance was the first new ship to be commissioned for Fleet Four. Under the command of Captain William Bligh, it served a pivotal role in the Crag War. With the aid of the then-friendly Romulans, The Alliance was responsible for destroying the Crag station at Iggy X and capturing the Crag station at Iggy V, which later became starbase Deep Space 20.
Later, during a raid on a Crag mining facility, the Alliance discovered evidence that the Crag were, not acting of their own accord, but were in fact being controlled mentally by a race of Overlords, who were using a Dyson Sphere built around a pulsar to channel energy into the Force, and then using that to control the Crag. Commanding a large Task Force, the Alliance attacked and destroyed the Dyson Sphere, which the Crag had dubbed the Rolchana, or Star of Death.
In gratitude to the Federation, the Crag almost immideately applied for Federation membership. While the Federation Council debated the issue, the Alliance was sent to act as a liason and to host a cultural exchange mission with the now peaceful Crag. Unfortunately, the mission was sabotagued by a race known as the Seetha, from the planet Sith, about 40 light-years from Crell. The Crag had conquered the Sith during the Overlord Occupation and obliterated its moon, Xizor. The Seetha, a race with the ability to fool someone into seeing them as someone else using pheremones, were back for revenge. They attacked the Alliance and kidnapped one of the Crag officers in the exchange party before running back for Sith, with the Alliance hot on their tail. The Alliance managed to rescue the Crag officer and destroy the Seetha ship, just in time to return to Crell where Captain Bligh was the keynote speaker at the ceremonies admitting Crell to the Federation.
Following the admission ceremonies, the Alliance was transfered to the newly formed Fifth Fleet, where it was to take up position as the lead diplomatic vessel, and Captain Bligh was to become the new Assistant Fleet Commander. On the way it stopped off at the Arbuckle Ship Yards at Zeta Maxtor III to be upgraded into an Aurora-class Cruiser.
After a short tenure in Fleet Five, the Alliance returned to Fleet Four when Captain Bligh was given command of the Fourth Fleet. Since then, it has served as the flagship of Fleet Four.
The First Quote War:
Around Stardate 97111.0, the commanding officers of the Alliance
began to post quotes on the ship's MOTD. These quotes weren't always
historically drawn, but sometimes were. On Stardate 97112.6, Captain
Larry Garfield discovered that the crew of the USS Ares was pilfering
the concept, along with the rest of the MOTD. This began a war between
the two crews over which ship had more pointless quotes on their MOTD.
The Independence joined in the fray for a time, but by Stardate
98010.9 both the Independence and the Ares had surrendered
to the Alliance to avoid any further casualties among the ranks
of those with good taste. A list of ammunition
used by the USS Alliance is available, but protected by copyright
under Federation law.
The Second Quote War:
In December of 1998, former Alliance XO Seamus Hughes would
declare War against the Alliance in a Second Quote War. This
time, quotes would have to be posted on the WeBB and then moved to a page
on the Internet linked to from the Ship's MOTD. The Alliance,
Hughes' Futura, and Jim Armstrong's USS Olympic would declare
their participation, but the war did not go well. Hughes left STF
for a period in late December, and in early January Alliance CO
Larry Garfield's hard drive would crash, taking with it over 200 posted
quotes that had not yet been moved to the web site. Many parties
would eventually declare victory, but only the Alliance could claim
a group effort. While the Futura and Olympic Captains
were the prime source of quotes for their ships, the Alliance quotes
stemmed primarily from the Engineering department, with Eng-1 Laimy Wu
the definitive leader and CE Jeremy Friedman a close second. The
hundreds
of quotes used in the war serves as a testimony to the greatness of
the Alliance.
The Third Quote War:
In February of 1999 came a return attack by the USS Ares.
Captain Townes wanted a rematch. The Third Quote War would consist
of quotes from historical sources, movies, books, and would have to be
signifigant in their own right. This time, to free up the WeBB boards
quotes would be e-mailed to the captian. The Third Quote War would
take place at exactly the same time as the February 1999 Presidential Elections,
and last the same two weeks. When all was said and done, the Alliance
crew had pulled in an amazing 444 quotes.
The Ares, meanwhile, entered none. The Quotable Ship had proven
itself again.
Many of the Alliance's old logs are available as part of the GMD Mission Archive. Those that have not yet been added to the Archive are available via the online Captain's Log.
