Fleet News and Briefs

You will probably notice something different about this fleet report, specifically where you're reading it. Since Fleet Four is just so much more thorough than any other fleet, I decided it would be easier on everyone if I moved the reports over to an html format. I think it makes things a lot easier.

What you probably don't notice is that I've also replaced the e-mail report submission still used by inferior fleets with a web form-based one. Frankly, the feature is still very rough around the edges and in "alpha" version, but it dramatically improved reporting this time around. Except, that is, for crew recommendations, which were a bit thin this time around, probably due to their separation from the rest of the forms. I will be working with my staff to fine tune the Reports, so expect things to get even better.

I've also come to the conclusion that ListBot, the mailing list service we used to use, is dead and buried. I've migrated Fleet Four over to a new service, eGroups.com, which is a PC Magazine Editors Choice. (Oh, big whup.) I'm hoping that there are no glitches in the move, but you never know.

Around the fleet, everyone looks like they are in good shape, with the ironic exception of the Columbus. The Columbo used to be the top ship in Fleet Four, but suddenly faded out very fast. The cause is still under investigation, and rest assured that once I find out those responsible will be spanked. Meanwhile, I'm working at getting the ship back on its feet. I hope to give the mission back over to Jeff to complete soon, since I'm not certain where he planned to go from here. For more information, see the Columbus report below.

In other news, rebel spies on starbase 202 have located the secret location of the Death Larry. Several members of the crew are attempting to infiltrate and destroy the behemoth of a space station (which is not a moon), but upon dropping out of warp found themselves face to face with Larry ships in sector 27. Word on the street is that George Lucas will be filing suit against STF4 some time later this week.

USS Alliance

CO: Larry Garfield
XO: Ralf Steen
GM: Deanne Ashton

rpg Update:
The month of May has been a period in the middle between two sims for the Alliance. The former mission, lead by Chris Ashley, came to an end very soon in the month, and our new gm, Deanne Ashton, has just yesterday started the new sim. The crew has in the meantime managed to entertain themselves with various little side sims as well as the usual promotion party.

Activity Level:
In spite of this and the CO's reduced presence, the crew's activity level has been on a very high level, and I expect it to rise even more once the new sim will be in full swing.

Crew:
The Alliance's crew roster has witnessed some changes recently.
Ari Herbstman's CSO has left the ship to be treated in an institution for mental health; Ari will remain onboard as CNS with a different character though.
Peter Hull has joined the crew to replace Ari as cso, whereas Chris Ashley's GM character Toobits will complement the Security detail as full-fledged crewmember.
We also welcome our new GM, deanne ashton as well as brian Smith, our former xo, who will now take up the position of cto.
The whole crew (with the exception of our long-time loas)has been doing an excellent job on filling in the simless time, so I feel it would be quite unfair to point out a single person here, though a special bonus for three dimensional character building for Johnathan Hughes and Elana Rubin would be in order (a cookie perhaps?).

General:
I guess everybody is very curious what Deanne's wonderfully twisted GM mind has been cooking up for us (hi, DD!), so I hope to be back with most interesting news next month.

CO Report:
Four GMs, six months, and at least three plot rewrites later, the Alliance is still going strong after the Yuki mission. According to the mastermind behind it, chris Ashley, he had planned multiple possible endings depending on how well the crew did. Based on the fact that we were able to accomplish exactly what the Federation had hoped for, I guess we did quite well. I'm proud of the whole crew. A big welcome back to our former XO, Brian Smith, who has returned to STF and the Alliance as our new CTO. Also welcome back to Deanne Ashton, who picks up the GM reins again. Ralf Steen and Elana Rubin have been giving Deanne some competition for the title of "Most intimate character relations ever" with the liaison between their XO and cmo characters. (ralf's the little woman, elana's the hermaphrodite. Only on the Alliance...) I'm looking forward to the next mission. Maybe we can have a GM last an entire mission for once. (The last time that happened was the last mission I GMed on the Alliance, which ended in late 1998.) My only concern is Ari Herbstman, formerly CSO and for IC reasons now Counselor. Unfortunately, he's been on iLOA for a month now, and is not responding to e-mails. I may have to replace him, even though I don't want to. I should probably call his mother first and see what's up. (We've known each other since before Mike ballway made me up as his fake WeBB persona.)

USS Asimov

CO: Emma Rouse-Deane
XO: Taliyah Campbell
GM: Larry Garfield

RPG Update:
Well lets see... found the SS Essess... found the Field Generator... found the generator locked up in a forcefield by which only the CO has the codes for... found the CO very uncooperative... away team mission was a bust... had to evac the Essess... and tried to destroy the Essess before the Seetha could get the generator... failed again... Seetha have generator and are heading back into Seetha space... Essess CO can be found in the brig... Poor Elliot is still shaking from the excitement.

Activity Level:
Well lately posting has slowed though I believe it is only due to a few loa's including our GM. As well as exam time and graduation time.

Crew:
Izzy has been very active and enthusiastic in the sim even prompting an impromptu ship brainstorming meeting in IRC a few nights.
Also as usual Johno Hughes has been creatively adding to the sim.
Our new CE has arrived and shows great promise.
Again apparently our med department hasn't learned not to beg for trouble by stating they are bored... I can't wait to see what larry shall now have in store for them.

General:
Unfortunately we seemed to have lost a few rpers over this month... three I believe.

CO Report:
The Asimov has been a little on the slow side lately as our roster has decreased a bit and our GM went on a brief LOA. There was much excitement over a recent away team mission. The med team is once again at it complaining of boredom... they haven't learned yet not to let Larry know they are bored. The DHs are working hard and well though I'd like to see more posting from the dash officers. The crew has also appeared to start to be at least somewhat cordial to the visiting reporters which has decreased some tension. We now have to figure out a way to get back the Force Generator which the Seetha now have.

AFComm Report:
The Asimov is in excellent condition at the moment. The sim is running very smoothly, and posting is reaching an all-time high. Everyone seems to be enjoying the sim, and nearly everyone has something to do. Those that don't are occupying themselves with character development. Character interaction is excellent at the moment. There is excellent tension between the CO and XO, and Izzy as always is making waves :) Every member of each department seems to be getting on very well, and the ship has a great character dynamic. Overall, I hate this ship! :). Its much too lovey-dovey, and a whole lot more fun than mine right now.

USS Columbus

CO: Paul Jones
XO: Kystelle Bromilow
GM: Larry Garfield, acting

RPG Update:
The Columbus is still trying to solidify relations with the new Trading Federation that they have bumped into. We are quite certain that they deal in the slave trade and that is the basis for their Trading Federation.

Activity Level:
Its been fairly quiet on Columbus this month as well, activity level is wayyy down.:) Jeff is still LOA and Larry apparently has taken the sim as far as he can. We also have a few LOA's with the crew still and quite a few I have had to AWOL for no activity. I am not sure what the Columbus needs but it definitely needs a shot in the arm or something:)

Crew:
Our roster is shrinking again due to resignations and AWOLs, we could use a shot of new recruits:) Perhaps that would liven the ship up:)
I am finding myself with not much to say about the senior crew aboard as we are all tried and true RPers and are doing our best with what we can with the sim as slow as it is.
Kelly Byers (Lt.jg Byers Sec-2) is fairly new but doing very well, I enjoy this young man's posts.
As for the rest of the junior crew I can't really think of much to say about them either as it has been so quiet we haven't heard from much of any of them :)
Ens. Drew Sewell Eng-2 shows promise in his(?) posts.
Mackie Stockhausen(Cadet Juliet L'anson, Med-1) is also a new addition the last month or two and his posts are always interesting :) He does have the habit of changing names quite a bit though which confuses my memory of what his char posts "). But he is always entertaining.

General:
As you can see I am rather confused on what I can suggest to help the ship out. It is foundering a bit I think. Perhaps once Jeff comes back full time and gets the sim going, things will pick up:)

CO Report:
The Columbus is slowly picking itself up, though its still in bad shape. Once upon a time, I'd bet the ship against any in the fleet, but now its struggling. The main problem is activity- the Columbus is down to very few posts a day. Frequently there's been as little as 2 or 3 posts.
This is all likely to improve when Jeff returns, and the sim can continue. Larry has done a great job taking over, but he has reached the limit of Jeff's plans.
The only trouble is, a lot of people have left due to the lack of activity. It may be difficult to get them back. I think a few new members need to be sent to the ship.
Despite the ship's sinking, the senior crew are keeping their heads afloat. They are all dealing with the 'crisis' well, continuing to post and role-play well. It is their efforts that are keeping the ship afloat, and maintaining the warm atmosphere of the ship.
Despite all these problems, I have no doubt the ship will be back to its usual standards eventually; it'll just take a little time. As the captain, I find I'm helpless to do anything- I've been dishing out orders to keep people occupied, but they're a little pointless without a GM. If Jeff does not return within the week, I think we need to get a new permanent GM (maybe Larry can take over the sim completely- HINT HINT)
BTW, the Columbus now sports a very fashionable new MOTD, courtesy of Krys and Linus. Very nice indeed :)

USS Montgomery

CO: Jeff Field
XO: Philip Hobday
GM: Colin Wyers

RPG Update:
We are still more or less where we were the other week - stuck in the Theatre of the Absurd, waiting to find our way out. Captain Kep's away team is now on board Delta Base, but the base's automatic firing facility is shooting at the Monty.

Activity Level:
Between 7 and 10 per day. Rate of posting slow, since the current sim is very complicated and requires a lot of thought before posting! Should pick up when we reach starbase and have our huge End of Sim party!

Crew:
Events have picked up since Jeff's return (Fleet Captain Jeff Field, CO), but we're still going quite slowly. Jennifer Schubert (Lieutenant-Commander Kianna, CSO) is doing very well with her character development. This sim is the toughest I've faced and we're all strained by it - Mr. Wyers should be congratulated. We have not, however, succumbed to the temptations and lost another bridge, CO or pair of fuzzy dice.

General:
All said above, really - things are going very slowly as the sim is very complex and exceptionally tough. Some crew members seem to be losing interest. Once we get a breakthrough, though, I expect the pace to pick up.

CO Report:
No Report Submitted.

FComm Report:
The Montgomery is still alive, although posting has decreased a bit. The current mission is giving everyone a headache, which as I understand it was the intent. Kudos to Ralf Steen and Philip Hobday who have at least somewhat figured out what in the world is going on. Due to RL emergencies Jeff hasn't been very active lately, but that does not appear to have hurt the plot any, as Philip, Stuart Coll, and Jaret Hargreaves have done a great job filling in for him IC. The Roster could stand to be cleaned, and the MOTD updated, but the ship is still in pretty good shape.

Starbase 202

CO: Krystelle Bromilow
XO: Doug Van Ness
GM: Larry Garfield

RPG Update:
The Starbase has reached what will hopefully be the end of our translator problems. We are attempting to re-boot the station and then reload the translator program.

Activity Level:
Posting seems to be slowing down a bit, but we have been plagued by several LOA's and a couple of AWOL's this month. Posting will resume once the LOA's end.

Crew:
The crew is working well together to solve the problems and the DH's are doing a good job in keeping the dash officers busy. I recommend Michael Seiler (LTJG Krawford Night) for an XO position. He is a strong consistent poster and keeps his dash officers busy.

General:

CO Report:
The 202 seems to be coming along well this month, the crew is working well together and appeared to have found a good RPing rhythm between them. I was worried about being able to bring a crew together that meshed well but I think I have succeeded. The crew is a bit of a mix between older and new RPers. I have worked hard with a few of them to improve their RPing skills and it has paid off. They have managed to make it through two of the three sim aspects that Larry has thrown at us. We are just now attempting to work on tying the loose ends up and closing in on the saboteurs.
The XO, Doug Van Ness has seems to have found his niche as well and is RPing well with the crew. I find it very enjoyable to sim with Doug and think I found a gold mine when I brought him aboard. As he is getting recommendations for CO, I run the risk of losing him but he has proven to be an excellent manager of the technical and crew aspects of the 202 and is more than ready for his own command.
Linus Lindblad, who plays our CMO S'Rell has proven to be an excellent CMO. He works well with the new dashes and keeps a good run on his department. He is also an excellent RPer and it is enjoyable to read his posts. This young man is definitely XO material. Kevin Pu who plays our CSO Lt. Puffer has come a long way since I first joined the 202 as his CSO. His posting style and manner has improved greatly as well as his ability to stay within the sim line. I have been very pleased to promote him to Lt. and CSO this month. He is handling the new responsibilities very well and I would recommend him for any DH postings else where.
Machaek Stockhausen(CSS Lt.Riker), a relative newbie, has excelled quickly. From a poor poster when he first joined he accepted tutoring on posting and it is amazing what has come from this young man, posting and RPing wise. He has an amazing grasp of subtleties and has learned to bring this out in his posting. Mackie was newly promoted this month as well to LT. and CSS and I have not been disappointed yet. This young man will more than likely be an XO before we are totally ready for him :).
Michael Seiler, who plays Lt.jg Night, was also another newbie that from the first showed his initiative and stellar posting from the very beginning. I have never seen two newbies get DH positions as fast as he and Mackie have, but they both more than deserved it.
Carol Lee who plays our CNS has her good posting days and her bad ones. But she has settled herself in well and has become a fixture on 202:)
David Yim, Lt.jg. Ops-2 was one I managed to lure to 202 from the Challenger with a lot of pleading. He plays an excellent and intuitive Engineer. This young man has a lot of DH's I understand and he is more than ready I think for an XO position.
Philip Graham(Lt.jg. Hacket) and Alun Hughes(Ens. Hughes Med-1) have been fairly quiet posters this month but have added to the completion of the sim parts. Alun Hughes is more than ready for a DH position I think but he really needs an Editor:)
Cole Wenger who plays Ens Billy Bob, Sci-2 has been making more of an effort to get involved in the sim this month but he still has the tendency to get pulled off on a side sim:)
I have three new crewmembers this month that I will be watching with interest, Ens. Jeremy Dodge(Ops-1)played by himself; Mandy Carter (Ens Shanna Winslow Med-2); and Stan Tompson, Chief Janitor:).

AFComm Report:
Starbase 202 is in tip-top shape. The crew is very strong, with just the right combination of experienced and new blood, and the interaction between them is great. There is a very friendly atmosphere on board, and the crew seem to be really enjoying themselves. Larry's sim is progressing well, and he is continuing his usual theme of a group of sims, rather than one. The posting quality is, for the main part, very good, and the number of posts a day has reduced a bit recently (die to LOAs and AWOLS). Plus, the MOTD is very nice. Not as nice as the Columbus's, but still, very nice :)

Crell

Active Members: Larry Garfield, Deanne Ashton, Krystelle Bromilow, Kristina Humphreys, and Special Guest Star Nathan Miller

Status:
Crell's small cast of characters continues to plod along. The Crell planetary government has asked me to consider renaming it to "Romance Central," but so far I've decided Crell is easier to type. Nonetheless, that is what is happening. With the partial return of Nathan Miller, everyone's favorite "intimate encounter" authors have been at it again, complementing the still-platonic relationships of Garfield-Ashton and Ashton-Bromilow (don't ask). Kristina Humphreys returned to Crell recently along with STF, but has not posted for a week now. I'm still trying to convince Ralf Steen to join in the fun. :-)
