Fleet News and Briefs

As some of you are already aware, Fleet Four is beginning a new chapter. I think this is now Episode V, the Fleetwide Strikes Back. That's right, we are beginning a new Fleet Four Fleetwide, officially known as the Fleet Four Fleetwide Finale, or F^4. After debating the idea for a while on the fleet mailing list, most responses were either very positive or positive with some reservations (usually at the Holiday Inn), so we are pressing forward. Officially, the Fleetwide began on 25 November, with an SNN broadcast to the entire fleet to bring everyone up to speed. SNN will also be making periodic fleetwide broadcasts throughout F^4 in order to keep everyone up to date on what is happening elsewhere. My small cadre of co-conspirators and assistants in the GMing department consists of former GMDir/AGMDir pair Chris Ashley and Jeremy Friedman. Hi, guys!

More details are being withheld at this point, for reasons of national security (and so as to not spoil the surprise). This fleetwide is made possible by a grant from the corporation for public broadcasting, the unprecidented ending of 4 missions at the same time in the same fleet (the fifth is being parlayed into the fleetwide directly), and the continued support of RPers like you.

Side note for this month, Ralf Steen has taken a brief LOA due to the Christmas rush at his place of work, so his reports are exempted this month. Additionally, reports are not included from Jeff Field or Sherrie Campbell, although I am not certain that it is their fault as I have received a few reports of problems with the report forms. I will look into it upon my return from Massachusetts, where I will be this week embarrassing The Ballway in front of his college friends. I am not declaring an LOA for this week, but my activity will be reduced.

Now, on to the last month's worth of news.

USS Alliance

CO: Larry Garfield
XO: Ralf Steen
GM: Deanne Ashton

RPG Update:
Just as the very fabric of the space/time continuum was ripped asunder, characters were dropping like flies, and ships were blowing apart like fire crackers, four brave souls jumped through the Guardian of Forever II. Reality was corrected and the sim came to a satisfying close.

The Alliance is now at Starbase 202, unloading the colonists and preparing for the next set of orders. Except for a few character-driven threads still lacking a tidy bow, the sim is concluded. Well before the deadline I had hoped to meet.

And thus ends my tenure as Alliance GM. A record-breaker, I understand, in that I had the helm from start to finish. I admit that while there were times the Alliance crew drove me to pull my hair out, the final month or so has been the most fun I've ever had.

A plot device that was pure whimsy on my part brought about some of the best roleplaying I've ever seen in this club. I can't heap enough accolades on the crew. Everyone took up the challenge of the altered-reality plot. Everyone contributed something creative and everyone seemed to be having a really fun time; including the GM.

I wish the Alliance crew all the best. Thanks for such a great ride.

CO Report:
We on the Alliance are honored to have added a few gray hairs to the head of Deanne Ashton. It certainly was a exciting time. The plot started off slow, and seemed to meander for a while, but as Deanne said a few members of the crew came up with some small, inconsequential ideas that she jumped on and ran with, and by the end of the mission everything was going completely nuts, in the best way possible. The last month on the Alliance has featured "Yesterday's Enterprise," "Parallels," and the most recent USS Merlin mission, all rolled into one. It was more fun than is probably legal. (And it actually forced me to read all notes before replying for once, after I totally screwed up when it first started.) Innumerable kudos to the entire crew. I was amazed at some of the ideas people came up with in the alternate dimension, a concept that I usually steer clear of but in this case worked out wonderfully. It makes an old captain proud. I'm not going to name names, because there are just too many this time around. Well, I will name one, Deanne Ashton. Deanne is correct in that this is the first Alliance mission to go beginning to end with the same GM since the last mission I GMed on the Alliance, which ended in November 1998. Frankly, I can't think of anyone more appropriate to break that streak. While we all hate to see Deanne resigning, she is most definitely going out with a bang. Congrats, Deanne, on a wonderful mission, and thank you.

USS Asimov

CO: Emma Rouse-Deane
XO: Sherrie Campbell (Report filed by 2O Barry Vogtman, See News and Briefs)
GM: Larry Garfield

RPG Update:
SNN was unable to stick around for the weddings, unfortunately, but did get a hearty farewell from the crew, who are now enjoying some R&R on Deep Space 20. The while crew, or almost all of it anyway, is in Eight Forward, squished really tight because there's not much space. Erm, that is they're enjoying some refreshments, while watching themselves on TV, in the SNN broadcast of their last mission. Overall, the Asimov has been a joy to GM, one of my best GMing experiences.

Activity Level:
Although the main sim has ended, the posting level remains fairly high. Although it did drop off for a few days due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. I believe posting levels should rise even higher once we are in the midst of another sim. Although it is an extremely high expectation for a normal ship, the Azzy is by no means a normal ship.

Crew:
I would be remiss if I did not start out by saying that the entire crew deserves to be commended. However, there are a few people that stand above the rest. First, is Emma Rouse-Deane (Captain Eyota Thwayya). Emma has just completed her first sim as captain. She has adjusted well to her new command and has gained the well deserved respect of the crew. Next is Mackael Stockhausen (Lieutenanat Adam 'Mackie' Troi). Mack has filled the role of aCMO much better than anyone could have hoped for. His posts are always imaginative, and at times downright hysterical. His new sidesim is also quite entertaining, if not a bit torrid :-). Finally, I must mention Julian Novotony (Civilian Cactus Jack Foley - Bartender). Julian has provided us with some much needed comic relief. His main character, an engineer turned bartender, along with his two sidekicks are always there to lighten the situation and entertain the crew.

General:
Considering the Azzy is in between sims currently, there are not to many places that need work. The posts are heavy in character development right now. The one area that may need some attention is bringing in some more JO's for science, security, and engineering.

AFComm Report:
The Asimov is taking it easy this month, after docking at Deep Space 20, for some much needed R and R, we've been chilling in Eight forward, occupying the holodeck for some aerial dog fighting, and generally just taking it easy.

The end of the sim has provided us some time to try our hands at character development and interaction, which has cumulated into an end of mission party, and an upcoming wedding.

Overall, I am pleased at how the crew has handled the break time, posting has been consistent, and more than enjoying to read, and the crew are getting on extremely well. The choccie cake has been replaced, the party is in full swing, we're looking good.

USS Columbus

CO: Ralf Steen
XO: Linus Lindblad
GM: Larry Garfield

RPG Update:
The renegade senior staff, under the control of the Malencar Sect of the Palpitine, has run off to another system to hide and conduct repairs on the Malencar Sect's Force Generator. The Generator itself is working, but the slave ships's power system is beginning to buckle under the strain. Ironically, if the Generator goes offline the crew is freed. Before they left, however, the captain sent a coded signal to the saucer section, locking out all computer functions and stranding the crew. The saucer crew, all junior officers, are now trying to cut a hole in the shuttlebay doors in order to get out.

Activity Level:
Posting is going, but I can't say much for my own activity in it all. Been a busy month for me. And I don't expect it to be better.

Crew:
Everyone has improved, and they aren't trying to kill themselves. This is good, da?

General:
We've gone for the better, rejoice.

AFComm Report:
After an OOC mutiny at the beginning of the month, which the crew handled extremely well, things have become a little less hectic of late. The sim is proceeding well, considering nothing works on the saucer section :) The Force Generator has finally been revealed, (I'm just wondering if they will notice if I steal it.. I tried so hard to get one :) )

The crew is still divided, with the senior staff on one side being controlled, and the rest, on the other, trying to solve the little mystery, which, believe me, is no easy task.

With the ship in two, the crew in two groups, considering the circumstances, things couldn't be better.

USS Montgomery

CO: Jeff Field
XO: Philip Hobday
GM: Larry Garfield, sort of

RPG Update:
The missing Yuki was found, and returned to the confrence center, ending the plot on Risa. Yes, that's about all that there was to it, since the GM responsible was unable to complete the mission and I didn't feel comfortable giving the plot to anyone else, as it was one of his personal repeating threads. Instead, the Montgomery has been ordered to respond to a distress call from... the USS Columbus. Pausing at DS20 to pick up two new senior staff for the Columbus (Kenson Koh and Jeff Field), the Monty is due to rendez-vous with the Columbus saucer section any day now, which should make things quite interesting for both ships. Hopefully, it will also improve posting. Until then, most of the crew is kicking back and relaxing in Six Forward while watching SNN.

Activity Level:
Slowing, due to the long absence of the GM and the consequent boredom among crew members.

Crew:
Ens Chris Taylor (Chris Taylor) is finding his feet, while Ensign Hida (Zachary Bottorff) appears to have disappeared. As ever, Drake and Kianna's romance continues to be of great interest...Stuart Coll and Jennifer Schubert have an excellent plot line going here.

General:
Despite the recent, and understandable, decline in posting, still one of the best places in STF to RP.

CO Report:
None received, see News and Briefs.

FComm Report:
Chris Ashley's LOA last month hit the Monty at a weak point, and it needed resusitation. At the moment, that resusitation comes in the form of the knowledge that it will be joining the Columbus soon, and the SNN broadcast. That, combined with an acciental trip to 10 Backward by Sci guy Scott Jordan and the ongoing romance between Stuart Coll and Jenn Schubert's characters has provided the bulk of the action. I am hopeful that the integration between the Monty and Columbus will provide an incentive. Ironically, the Monty hasn't had a stable GMed mission since Colin Wyers ill-executed Neon Genesis Evangelion mission last spring.

Starbase 202

CO: Philip Hobday
XO: David Yim
GM: Larry Garfield

RPG Update:
Stuff happened.

Activity Level:
The no. of post climbed to a rewarding high during the final part of the sim and most of the crew seems promising. Since the sim has ended now, the activity level drops a bit but still relatively high.

Crew:
The crew morale is relatively high due to much needed rest brought by the end of the sim. And there is much rejoice.

Our new CO, Philip Hobday performed well above my original expectations. Althought he's new to the station, he get hold of the situation quickly and lead the crew into victory swiftly. I'm glad to see him stay as our BCO.

Apart from the new BCO, our COO, Michael Seiler and the Medic trio deserved some rewards for their efforts.

On the other hand, our CSS, John Stoner II, has to resign from the station due to time constrictions. The Station Command is looking for sutiable person to fill that post.

General:
I wouldn't say this is our finest hour but we progressing forward steadily. With time on our side, we will do better.

CO Report:
The sim, thank goodness, is now over. SB202 is developing a sense of atmosphere - and perhaps energy? - now we're moving on to the new set of challenges - firstly, of repairing the station from the damage caused by Larry's terrorists! Posting is becoming stronger, and the Medical branch in particular, aided by the Counsellor, have impressed me with their collective eagerness and RP skills. We need to work on the quantity of posting, as well as getting a bit more character development. The new sim - and hopefully a couple of crew additions from the Challenger - should provide a well-needed stimulus to allow us to develop the great potential in SB202.

AFComm Report:
The Starbase is looking good this month, they have finally caught the terrorists, well most of them, the station is still in one piece, or as good as, and they are getting ready to unwind after a hectic couple of months. There are a few strange practices in sickbay which involve rouge and lipstick on a klingon (Don't ask ;) ), but apart from that, the station is in fine shape. The crew get on well, and the posting is up, time to party ;)

Crell

Active Members: Larry Garfield, Deanne Ashton, Ralf Steen, Emma-Rouse Deane, Edison Uy, Darin Weil

Status:
A few people are currently on LOA for various reasons, which has decreased posting a bit, but we're still doing alright. Deanne Ashton has taken the longest, for a month while she packs to visit England and to move into a new house, but we are all glad that she is going to be sticking around Crell for a while longer than the rest of STF. Especially me, because I don't know what to do with my character there if his girlfriend (played by Deanne) leaves. :-) Johno Hughes has expressed interest in joining the team, and I expect him to come aboard before the next report.
