Oed V Today

The modern OEDV colony serves as a busy commercial star-port and as a vital defence and maintenance outpost for Star-fleet and Fleet 6. Despite the dramas of the past, life under the Dome is peaceful and content. In fact so peaceful that the colony was recently expanded by the arrival of over five thousand additional colonists. New facilities have been unveiled, new accommodation created and the OED is undergoing a large program of rebuilding to take the OED to the next level.

We recently asked Fleet Commander Russell Watt, Fleet Commander of Fleet 6, for his opinions on the current state of the OED and why it makes a positive environment to live and visit.

"When I was first appointed FComm-6, Oed V was an important part of the Fleet. Commodore Symon Silvester had done a great job in restoring the Oed colony to a thriving colony. He had a great team of Star Fleet officers, rebuilding what had gone before and making it much more than that. This is the key part of the Oed Spirit that is spoken about ... taking nothing and making it something that the whole Fleet can be proud of.

This has been achieved in a little over three years. This growth has been recently rewarded by the arrival of more colonists and more facilities. In fact in the last year over fifty new business ventures have opened, including leisure facilities, bars, restaurants and shops. We have all the comforts of home even having our hotel and casino.

The OED is now is a true colony, vibrant, diverse and life here is exciting. It is a chance to build something for the future. The OED has a hospital, schools and culture. Families come here to build something and many of our visitors decide to stay."

Previously, Star Fleet has appointed a military Governor, but I understand that Oed V will now have a Civilian Governor. Do you consider this will negatively impact on the ability of Star-Fleet to adminster its operations?

"It is Star Fleet and Fleet 6 policy that the OED colony become more self governed. With that aim, I have elected to appoint a Civilian Governor. The man chosen for the role is Edgar Hart, a former Star Fleet Captain, who has come to OED V to retire. He has links still to Star Fleet, but he doesn't wear the uniform, which we hope will be a happy medium between the two.

Previously, the OED had a military governor, but Star-fleet operated a minimal presence here and we continue to keep most of our operations separate. The civilian government has its’ own council, own police force and own powers, and now a Civilian Governor. This Governor has been appointed, but its the next step towards self determination for them, the next step towards Star Fleet retiring to the orbital platform.

Looking over the history of OED V, there has never been a conflict between the duties of the office of Governor and the Military Duties of the senior Star-Fleet officer on Oed V.

Star-fleet continues to encourage the growth of this colony. We want a thriving commercial facility. We want the OED to be a natural destination for all ships to visit and explore. Star-fleet crews need shore leave as much as any civilian ships."

Retired star Fleet Captain, Edgar Hart had the following to say following his appointment to the role of Governor.

"To make the colony a permanent fixture. When I came here, I came to retire, to live out the remainder of my life as a civilian ... but fate tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to serve as Governor ... the first Civilian Governor of OED V. Was this a good choice? Only time will tell, but I am here to contribute to the future of OED V.

I am merely a steward of this colony. My job is to direct the colony and nurture it towards the goal of self government and self determination. There will be challenges, I am certain, but I still have connections in Star Fleet, and I am certain those connections will serve me well.

I look forward to the challenges ahead of me in the weeks, months and years to come, as Star Fleet continues to remove its presence to the orbital platform and cedes control of the colony to the elected Civilian Government."
