08020.1: Supplemental
The main force in Romulan life is honor, but they also acknowledge the reality of power. The goal of every Romulan is gaining power -- if not for themselves then for their House and the Empire. The loyalty of Romulans for the Empire is unquestionable, and the nationalism of Romulans can always be counted upon in times of conflict. It is their belief that if mnhei'sahe--Ruling Passion--is with the Empire, glory will remain with Romulans. These beliefs and their blood hatred of the Vulcans have led to hundreds of years of bloody conflict. Four days ago, the USS Ogawa received part of a transmission on subspace frequency 1788.23, from the Bassen Rift. Since that time, Starfleet has been tracking the curiously strong transmission, its distress call brief and interrupted by some unknown force, and replaced by silence on an open communication bandwidth of such strength that it reaches halfway across known space. It was that transmission that the Ogawa tracked so far as the Romulan Neutral Zone, and deep into it.
Now, the Ogawa hangs in space in the perilous region known as the Bassen Rift, orbiting a small Class-D Planetoid, while a hundred meters beneath the surface the signal remains, generated by the communications platform of a secret base, whose very purpose is unknown. But she is not alone. Nearly ninety meters in length, the Romulan scout ship Kestrel sits but five thousand meters off her bow, her crew apparently casualties of whatever fate befell this outpost. Fighting the very region of space itself, Ogawa must try to piece together what happened to claim the lives on the outpost, as well as a Romulan crew.
