Overview
The Corvans are a Beta Quadrant humanoid species based on the Corvan homeworld. The Corvan Federation (the name of the Corvan Government) is overseen by the Corvan Ruling Council and is led by the Corvan Emperor. The Corvans live under water in beautiful crystalline cities. They also have gills which allow them to breathe underwater. A Corvan is capable of breathing air provided they wear a special suit which is designed to keep their bodies moist and a fishbowl like device which is filled with water. The water must be recycled every 15 hours when a Corvan is not in their native environment.
Eating habits and physical fitness - The majority of the Corvans is extremely physical fit and believes that taking care of their body is a sign of respect so fitness is expected and required. From the age of 2 years old, Corvans are encouraged to enroll in a physical training program. By the time they are ten years old, Corvans are capable of running five miles each day. Each morning Corvans spend two hours doing cardio and strength training. Military members spend double the amount of time training. Their physiology is designed in such a way that they only require two meals per day to survive.
The Corvans have a distrust of Klingons due to a conflict they fought in the 23rd century. The conflict ended in a stale mate and as a result both species agreed not to have contact with each other. The Corvans were disturbed to learn that there were Klingons serving in Starfleet but have decided to put aside their hatred of the Klingons and work with the Federation.
Society
Upon appointment of the Corvan Emperor, the Corvan culture, which has existed for thousands of years operated on the principle of service and helping those less fortunate. The pursuit of service is of extreme importance to the Corvan society. Greed, profit and other such worthy pleasures are strictly prohibited.
Thousands of years before they became civilized, the Corvan society was constantly at war with each other. Resources and wealth was the driving force of their civil wars and when the Corvans faced extinction, they decided to stop their lust for power and work towards bettering their society. The Corvan species achieved warp status five thousand years ago and explored the Beta Quadrant. To their disappointment, there were very few warp capable species they encountered so they returned to their home system. Occasionally, the Corvans ventured out when life forms were detected. There are ten star systems in the Corvan Federation. Their territory spans 0ne thousand light years to the North and West of their territory.
The Corvans have a strict code of honor. Like the Federation, their first duty is to the truth and if any member of their society is caught lying, the punishment can be very severe from banishment from Corvan Five to being stripped of title and position and being publically disgraced. In the history of the Corvan culture there has only been one political scandal which caused the 30th Emperor to be removed from power. To this day, there are Corvans who still are angered at that decision and resentment towards their hero.
The Corvans do not believe in saying good bye to people they just met. They have a saying which allows for the possibility of meeting a friend down the road. Corvan children are taught not to fear death but to embrace the end of one’s life. When Corvans are near death, they celebrate the accomplishments of a person by honoring their service with a public ceremony attended by their close friends and family.
Mating Rituals
The Corvans are very similar to Denobulans in their family structure. Corvan mating rights allow three wives for every husband or three husbands for every wife. Unlike some cultures in the alpha quadrant, Corvans are very open-minded when it comes to same sex marriages. While same sex marriages are rare in Corvan society, they have been known to happen.
Government
The Corvan society is ruled by the Corvan Ruling Council. The Council is made up of 15 Sub-Ministers with the 16th acting as the Prime Minister. The Ruling Council is responsible for enacting and protecting the laws of the Corvan Federation. The Prime Minister reports directly to the Emperor who is responsible for approving the laws that the ruling council make.
Corvan Defense Force
The primary military force of the Corvan Federation is the Corvan Defense Force. They are responsible for patrolling Corvan space and responding to any hostile actions against the Corvan Federation. There are two different types of cruisers the Corvans rely on for space travel. Emphali class, which is used for exploration. Kevan class is used for combat and deep space tactical operations.
The Kevan class starship is said to be similar to that of a Galaxy Class starship and has transwarp capability.
Corvan Naval Patrol
The Corvan Naval Patrol is a police force/militia which is responsible for patrolling the waters of Corvan Five. It is comparable to a national police force. They have jurisdiction over the entire planet and have the authority over all visitors and permanent residence of the planet. Unlike the Defense force, members of the Naval Patrol spend 20 weeks in training before they are able to graduate and become officers.
Corvan Emperor
The Corvan Emperor is the final ruling authority of the Corvan Federation. The Emperor has the authority to initiate first contact with new species, sign laws into existence and speak on behalf of the Corvan Federation. Appointment to this position is determined by the planetary ruling council and once appointed the Emperor serves in this position for life.
HISTORY
The Corvan species was one of the first species in the Beta Quadrant to achieve warp flight nearly ten thousand years ago. As they explored the Beta Quadrant, the Corvans were disappointed to learn that there were very few warp capable species at the time. Upon returning to their home system, the Corvan society soon ran into problems. Fighting broke out over resources. This fighting resulted in the near extinction of the Corvan species.
It was at that time that the Corvan Royal Court was established and Corvan Ruling Council established. The Corvans spent the next thousand years rebuilding their homeworld and healing as a people. Many of the old ways of violence was disregarded and the Corvan society developed into a peaceful race determined to leave their old ways behind.
Once peace had been achieved, the Corvans soon decided to take another chance of exploring space. In 2225, the Corvans developed transwarp drive and detected signs of life close to them. The Corvans made first contact with the Klingons in 2227. The Klingons impressed with the Corvans level of technology attempted to assassinate the commander of the Corvan people, as a result, a holy war was declared against the Klingon empire. However, despite their advance technology, the Corvans were never able to score a decisive victory and after ten years both sides decided to declare a truce with a neutral zone established between the Klingon Empire and the Corvan Federation.
After the war, the Corvan Federation entered into a fifty year period of isolation where they elected not to have any contact with other races outside of their sphere of influence. The Corvan Defense Force strengthened their defenses around their home planet and continued to ensure that they are prepared for any further acts of aggression.
Five years ago, the Corvan Federation made first contact with the United Federation of Planets. At first, there was resistance to the idea of meeting with the Federation citing their experiences with the Klingon Empire of the last century. After weeks of debate, the Federation was allowed to meet with them. After six months of talks, a treaty was signed with the Corvans and to their surprise, the Federation turned out to be peaceful alleys.
