childhood:

Jack spent his child hood on a freighter being taught english, maths and science by his mother and engineering from his father. when he reached 16 he started to work down in the ships core as the chiefs apprentice. At 17 jack joined the academy after being recommended by a star-fleet captain wen his fathers ship was attacked by pirates and jack kept the ships integrity field in one piece during the attack. he graduated the academy 2 years ago and has since risen two ranks from the beginning of his commission.

to become the chief engineer of a starship
