Discussion: Spam Filters on Internet Department

Well this is another fun discussion that I would like people's input on :-)

Currently the spam filters are set to:

1. Use greylisting (https://my2.pair.com/help.m?mail_junk_greylisting)
2. Scan emails for viruses (https://my2.pair.com/help.m?mail_junk_antivirus)
3. Uses a 'very aggressive' filter (https://my2.pair.com/help.m?junkmail_sensitivity)
4. Marks the subject line with '**JUNK**' if it's a positive (https://my2.pair.com/help.m?junkmail_subject)

There is the option of setting white and black lists. "@star-fleet.com" was on the white list, but given the amount of spam being sent from the 'forwards' I've taken that off. This should affect reports as they are sent using the poster's email address. If people think any addresses (preferably domains) should be added to either the white or black list, please post below.

We also have the option of using a Bayesian filter (these study the frequency with which words appear in junk and normal e-mail, using that to predict the possibility that future e-mails are junk). I have turned this on to see if it improves the amount of spam that gets through.

There is also the option of using DNS Blackhole Lists (https://my2.pair.com/help.m?mail_junk_dnsbl). I am inclined not to use it until we see the affects of the above changes are. I would be interested if a couple of people on the forwards can tell us how many spam emails they get per month currently (I get around 800 per month).

Any comments or questions?

Jack
