: : : : : : : : : Alright, this will be the thread for all things concerned with the GM Course & Exam.
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : I think most everyone can agree there are changes needed, so this discussion will be used by me to determine how many changes are needed and what precisely those changes will be.
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : So if you'd like to participate, I think it's best if you've at least read the existing course(http://www.star-fleet.com/library/bookshelf/textbook/textbook-gamemaster...)
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : Be specific and don't hesitate to completely tear it apart. :)
: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : Kat
: : : : : : :
: : : : : : : OCC: Never post while you're doing three other things and have loud people about.
: : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : I guess I'll be the first to be nit picky.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : On the exam requirements, Number 5 says that "Word or a Rich Text Format attachment is most acceptable." But it does not say it is required.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : I think it needs to be clarified to say that it is required, since my exam was not graded until I put it in an attachment. Also with the various versions of Word that are now out there, I think it should specify which version of Word is acceptable since those with older copies of word can't read files saved in the newer versions.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : The link which describes where to find star trek cannon is no longer viable at http://www.star-fleet.com/library/textbook/eng-105.html
: : : : : : : : Which is needed to answer question 25. And the small section in the course called Star Trek cannon does not indicate what is cannon. Does it include TAS? The Abrams verse? The novels are not specified as being taboo, though I do remember reading somewhere once upon a time that Star Trek novels and comics were not considered cannon as far as STF was concerned. I did dig into the engineering course under references and it does delve into this briefly. But if you don't happen to have the books listed as references, you may be in trouble figuring out cannon. Luckily I have one or the books listed plus a TOS technical manual that was never mentioned as a possible reference.
: : : : : :
: : : : : : The TOS manual is not considered canon from what I understand from Andy over in the EDept.
: : : : : :
: : : : : : : : What about using Memory Alpha as a source? I've only found a few times where it was inaccurate due to omission and it would be beneficial for those who haven't purchased the books, some of which are now out of print.
: : : : : :
: : : : : : Memory Alpha can be used as a source, however it is not considered Canon due to it not being released by something directly related to Paramount/Star Trek. I use it as a resource myself. Novels and comics are not considered canon for the same reason.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Also I'm adverse to putting direct links in since the file location could change and for the person moving a file that's one more spot that needs to be found and changed. I would suggest putting the information directly into the GM course.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Ogre is now hard to find since it's not visible on the new Gamemaster MOTD, unless I just missed it. A link to Ogre might be the exception to the rule since it is vital to being able to pass the course and putting it in it's entirety into the course is not logical since it is a living and evolving document. Or it could be put in the course and given it's own page, but someone would need to update it if a change was made to Ogre.
: : : : : :
: : : : : : Ogre is still linked to on the GM Department MOTD. Up the top, Edict takes you to the text of the OGRE edict ... however maybe someone could suggest to Kevin that it could be changed to OGRE (or have OGRE after Edict in brackets or something).
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Question 2 depends on whether the CO chooses to add the GM as an Admin and may not necessarily appear once they are made a GM on a ship if the CO does not give them admin rights. Also the admin menu course looks like it still refers to effWeBB.
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Does Question 5 still apply now that we are no longer using effWeBB?
: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : Just thought I would get things started.

: : : : : :
: : : : : : My review of the exam is coming up (I'm sure everyone can hardly wait).
: : : : : :
: : : : : : Russell
: : : : :
: : : : : I have a question about the current GM course. For those of us who may have been in the process of completeing the course and exam, may we continue to do so? Or does that need to be put on hold until the course is updated.
: : : : :
: : : : : -Harley
: : : :
: : : : Although that is really more of GMDept issue, if you use the current course, I don't think they'll mind.
: : : :
: : : : Harry
: : :
: : : There's also the issue that I presently don't have a course tutor for the GM Course(I've spoken to Kevin in regards to this as well as the GM Course review) so I'm waiting to see how he responds. However, like Harry said, I don't think the GM Dept would mind overly much if you used the current course(I will make it a point in the next day or so though to find out for sure from Kevin). A great question though Harley!
: : :
: : : Kat
: :
: : Actually I think it's an Academy issue. While the Gamemaster Course Proctor typically has a special voice to make announcements and such on the Gamemaster Department, and the Department has effect approval authority on new proctors, the position is within the Academy, as is all of the marking stuff. Essentially the GMDept will accept any score the Academy Course Tutor gives an exam, so, the current course is just fine so long as it's marked by a course proctor designated by the Academy who has passed GMDept approval.
: :
: : Anybody have some goo gone? So much red tape around here <G>
: :
: : Kevin Harbison
: : Gamemaster Director
:
: Thanks guys, but I think I'm going to wait. The new course seems like will better prepare me for being a GM.
:
: Harley
I've actually constructed a waiting lounge and quarters in Fleet 7, since I've been waiting so long. Anyone is free to join me! <G>
