: : : : : : : : : Kaya held up a hand. "I understand your frustration Commander, believe me, but we were faced with a difficult situation. The fact of the matter is, whatever we did, the only way we can get a handle on this plague is to study it, so either way we would have needed samples. Our quarantine procedures held initially, we had to compromise as the refugees had an adverse reaction to the medication they were given. The infection is contained on one deck and I will not release the quarantine until we either have a cure or a vaccine, you have my word on that. All of my crew are aware of what is at stake, and regardless of what happens to us, we will not leave until the situation is resolved." she added. 'Or we're all dead...' she thought.

: : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : "Captain, I'll be blunt, I am not happy about this. The plague exposure makes people irrational. It's entirely possible that if your ship became infected you would start shooting at us or decide to go run across the galaxy spreading the disease. We have to have controls in place. I need to know that you will take recourses to make the sector safe, no matter what happens." Harmon responded.

: : : : : : : Kaya thought for a moment. "I can take the engines offline and use my command codes to lock anyone out of trying to activate them. Anyone who shows signs of irratic behaviour will be confined to their quarters, including myself. If needs be I will destory this ship before I allow it to leave this planet and infect any others." she said with a determined nod. "I have to ask Commander, do you have any idea where this plague came from? Where were the first cases found?" she asked.

: : : : : :
: : : : : : "I will accept your offers, Captain, but I would reserve the right to ask you for further measures later if I feel that they are deserved." Harmon nodded and then checked his terminal screen. "We have oodles of information on this plague, Captain, sometimes far too damned much to make sense. Hold on while I make some searches."
: : : : :
: : : : : Kaya nodded. "Of course Commander, I can ask no more." she replied respectfully.
: : : : :
: : : : : : After a moment he cross linked a picture on screen, so that a map of the planet below took half the screen space and the other half was Harmon's office. "Captain, I am going to assume that you aren't familiar with the geography of this planet. There are three continents, but only one inhabited. We have a mining station and a refinement plant on one of the others. This planet is rich in vegetation with medical uses, latinum deposits and even some dilithium. We have five cities on this continent the biggest is the main capital which has the starport. The rest are outlying. We have two coastal cities, and two in land agricultural based."
: : : : : :
: : : : : : Then red dots started to overlay the display. "These are the first recorded cases of the plague. I say first recorded because frankly the pattern makes no sense. If you took it literally, then the plague originated in all five cities at once.....which is just bizarre. I can only assume that there were unrecorded cases or non identified cases before and it has spread."

: : : : :
: : : : : Kaya thought for a moment. 5 cities at once, how was that even possible, unless...
: : : : :
: : : : : "Commander, are there or have there been any similar diseases to this among the population in the past, or is it a totally new disease?" she asked, wondering if they were dealing with a mutation of an old virus, although she thought it unlikely.
: : : : :

: : : :
: : : : "No records of anything like this ever." The commander rubbed his eyes. "This is new to us. If we had experience before we might have a cure or something similar, or even recognised the symptoms for what they were."

: : :
: : : Kaya took a deep breath and shook her head. "Well Commander, in my experience a plague like this which is not a mutated form of another disease and appears seemingly simultaneously in several locations can only be engineered. Do the Ardans have any enemies that would be technologically advanced enough to engineer a disease like this?" she asked. Kaya was not happy with the ground that they were covering but she could see no other explanation.

: :
: : "What?" Harmon shot bolt upright, "You think that this is.....is....deliberate?" He sat in his chair stunned. "I admit, we thought of the possibility, but we are humans here. The colony is only the best part of thirty years old. We are out of the way and like being that way. I mean we have mineral wealth and so on, but nothing untoward. Beyond standard things and risks.....we have no specific enemies, if that is what you are meaning. We just assumed the virus was natural on this planet and we only just became aware of it."

:
: Kaya nodded solemnly. "I believe so Commander, there are just too many things that don't add up. If the disease had an origin and slowly spread, it would make sense, but for it to show up at near enough the same time in different locations, the probability that it could be a natural occurence is astronomically improbable. Add to that the fact that it is not a mutation of a virus which was present on the planet before, I don't see that we can draw any other conclusion. My medical and science staff are working non-stop on trying to work out a way to combat it, but I think we need to start looking at where it came from. If we can find who is responsible, they may already have a cure for it." she mused.
:
: Perhaps it was wishful thinking but it was worth a shot.

"I see...." Harmon fell silent and thought for a long time then he asked. "Have you any ideas how it may been delivered? We could try tracing people and ships around that time."
