Background:

Galen is the product of a wealthy Betazoid family. His father, Cyrus, is a merchant who has a fleet of six transport ships that delivers certain hard-to-find luxury items to clientele throughout the quadrant. His mother, Amora, is wealthy herself, being of minor Betazed nobility. They would often travel together, leaving Galen in the care of a nanny and various servants. As a youth, Galen always found science a favorite school subject. His parents encouraged this.

While his parents were away on one such delivery, Betazed was invaded by the Dominion. The Founders left Betazed under the rule of the Cardassians, who quickly constructed space station Sentek Nor to secure the strategic system.

The station would serve three purposes. First, it would be a flag base for the Founders. Second, Betazoid slave labor would be used to process precious metals strip mined from Betazed. Third, the infamous Cardassian geneticist Dr. Crell Moset medically experimented on Betazoids in an attempt to give the Dominion’s foot soldiers, the Jem Hadar, telepathic abilities.

Galen was one of the thousands of Betazoids thus medically experimented on. He was the one whose operations succeeded. He was granted with enhanced empathy, telepathy and minor telekinesis. The Betazoid Resistance, along with help from the Enterprise E, liberated Betazed, and the station, from the Dominion /Cardassian occupation.

Betazoids usually gain their telepathy at puberty, but as one of Dr. Moset's experiments, Galen was able to start using empathy at age nine."

As a young adult, he has enhanced empathy, and telepathy, at twice the intensity which normal Betazoids have. So he constantly has to erect mental barriers to block out unwanted emotions and even dreams from other people. He also has limited telekinesis, an ability not realised by Betazoids until they are elderly. He can lift about 10 pounds from a distance of 10 meters.

When Galen’s father came back, he pulled some strings, and got Galen to train with Betazoid and Vulcan telepathy masters to block out unwanted emanations from others. Then Galen decided to join Starfleet to sort of try to repay Starfleet for rescuing him when he was in need.

He graduated from the Vulcan Academy with a thesis on interphase cloaking device technology. Then he graduated from the Starfleet Academy with a thesis in the history of interphase. As a cadet assigned to the USS Discovery, he encountered an alien intruder utilizing an interphase-cloaking device. He referred to his earlier thesis works and flooded Engineering with harmless anyon particles to de-activate the alien’s phase device. Then he submitted a report to Starfleet Research and Development via Starfleet Intelligence.

Then he was promoted to Lt. Jg., assigned and assigned CSO, USS Discovery. On his next mission, he helped to recovered an ancient Vulcan Power Stone stolen by a rogue Ferengi starship. He released the custody of said artifact to the Vulcan Science Academy along with extensive research notes.

The next mission he aided in the recovery of artifacts from a lost Human colony. The civilian scout ship Tycon Sci Tech Explorer 1512 in the Sidel System initially discovered the colony. The scout ship didn’t have the resources to perform a thorough investigation of the colony site and the Discovery was called in. He submitted a report with colony artifacts to the Federation Historical Society and Federation Science Council.

On his last mission, the Discovery encountered a previously uncharted, technologically advanced, alien world that had warped into the solar system that the Discovery was traveling to. This warp was apparently accidental, caused by a rodent infestation that plagued the alien ship/planet. The crew of the Discovery assisted in clearing the infestation. The aliens rewarded the Discovery by fixing the ship.

Medical: As a result of the unethical neurological experiments Dr. Moset performed on him, Galen has reduced physical capabilities and should be excused from any physical qualifications. His metabolism works quite faster then a normal Betazoid, at about three times speed, so he eats three times as much to compensate. He will have a special hypospray ready with a vitamin and stimulant supplement to use on prolonged away missions.

Psychological notes: Galen has assimilated well into Starfleet despite the Cardassian influences. He has learned to control his telepathy so as not to accidentally read private thoughts.
