Horatio is a young man straight out of the Academy. Stout but untested he puts himself forward with a stiff upper lip to face his challenges with outward bravery, even if he didn’t exactly feel it inside.

His history, as he would tell it, is that he grew up on a ‘New England’ Colony world that was on a major trade route. By this he was exposed to many aliens and cultures, though did not embrace it at all. Horatio does not like non-humans much, though exhibits a quiet tolerance to their presence. Of British descent he is proud, and proud of the ‘Naval’ yards of Hampshire. He was the product of two conflicting generations of Army and Navy, choosing instead to compromise and choose the Grenadiers, or that which would more commonly be called Security. From generations of military family, Horatio has a long standing reputation and tradition to uphold – a stressful thing. His records and checks would uphold this history.

This being said, this is as much a falsehood as any that he might have made up. An orphan he knew no parentage, moved about often on the colony of Hampshire. Often he was in trouble as his genius would be used for things not entirely upstanding. That being said, his ‘genius’ helped him escape this downward spiral, and upon seeing a poster for ‘chess’ he put his mind to this game and quickly rose amongst the ranks. In an instance of encountering a Vulcan chess master where Horatio had played and beaten his son, the ‘master’ offered to help him hone his game and advance him as a sponsor. For months he did this and Horatio had begun to see him as the closest thing to a father he knew. In the end he was betrayed by logic in a match that could only have one registered entry and the Vulcan placed his son in rather than Horatio. This only reinforced his bias against aliens.

The ‘son’ was also trying to engage in Starfleet entry exams. In a fit of spite, Horatio applied, knowing that the choices were slim and the numbers chosen limited. Horatio’s only aim was to defeat the Vulcan to avenge his betrayal. It was a success; Horatio was chosen and the Vulcan lost out.

Horatio is proud and eminently polite, speaking with clipped and descriptive words. His favored dress off duty is a suit with bowler hat and brollie, the fashion on Hampshire. When he engages in anything that would be deemed challenging his catchword is: ‘Tally ho’. The young man has a distinct fear of being discovered and protects his identity by reinforcing the false one lest he be found in prison or back in the insane asylum to which he escaped or found himself in periodically.

Horatio is brave and knows his job, though he is still green in the realm of experience. Streetwise the world of high adventure as upon a Starship is a different thing entirely. He has studied much and would continue to study and train and learn to improve his skills. His hobby is still chess to which he undertakes many correspondence games by subspace. He prefers food made from scratch – and tea especially. For him, something about making ones own tea ‘completes’ it. He detests the holodeck, calling it utter unreality and a poor training method, and certainly an unreal space to be in, taking away from imagination that is much richer and to him should be strengthened. He will often lay for hours visualizing his own ‘world’ or cricket matches utilizing records and statistics as probabilities.
