She preferred sweet coffee and never needed the extra caffeine. She disliked tea quite a lot. For a moment, she surveyed the office. It was a place she would get to know well. It seemed comfortable and very sparse. Emalene wondered if it was because the doctor preferred it this way or because the doctor had not really moved in thoroughly.

: : : : : : : "Have you been with this ship long? Do you find the training of young doctors such as myself to be the challenge you most enjoy in Star Fleet?" She was always curious of peoples motivations. She liked to get them the old fashioned way though, by asking.

: : : : : : : Cadet Epoch, Doctor

: : : : : : Hillary smiled. This cadet certainly loved to talk and Hillary found it quite refreshing. Most cadets came through nearly too nervous to speak.
: : : : : :
: : : : : : She stood and ordered Cadet Epoch's drink. She ordered herself a glass of chocolate milk. Bringing the drinks back to the desk, she sat down in her chair and handed the cadet her drink. She took a sip of her own drink before answering...
: : : : : :
: : : : : : "I've been on the Disovery for a while now. And yes, I find training young doctor one of my favorite challenges as the needs of each doctor are very different and unique..." she replied, taking another sip of her cold chocolate milk...

: : : : : : Lt. Webb, CMO
: : : : :
: : : : : Taking the cup of coffee from Lt Webb, Emalene smiled and took a generous sip. The coffee was sweet and hot and warmed her body cold from the nervousness she felt. The nervousness was fading a bit though as she spent time with the doctor. Being a Betazoid had its advantages. Her species often found its place easily among companions of any kind. Part of that came from the empathy they automatically felt and part of that came from their innate curiosity and gregarious nature. Being the middle child, she was more quiet than most of her friends and family back home.
: : : : :
: : : : : "I hope to not be a difficult pupil and learn swiftly underneath you. My goal is to one day be a capable CMO like you. Have you ever trained a Betazoid before?"
: : : : :
: : : : : Cadet Epoch, Doctor
: : : :
: : : : "Those are both very noble goals" the CMO replied, trying not to smirk too widely. Most cadets were not difficult unless they chose to be defiant and they were far and few between.
: : : :
: : : : "No I have not trained a Betazoid, though I consider a great honor and privelege. Is there anything in particular that I need to be aware of?" she asked, knowing in her mind that there must be a reason why she mentioned it.

: : : : Lt. Webb, CMO
: : :
: : : "Not particularly, Lt. I asked more out of curiosity than anything. We are a very different people. Peace is our main goal in life of course and to hone our skills as an empath, telepath, and/or telekenetic. I personally have all three skills though empathy is my strongest skill in those inherent to my species. It is a worthy attribute for a doctor. Sometimes if a patient is in pain and cannot express what they need to, I can "feel it out" so to speak. It does not always work that way and it depends on the amount of pain. The more pain the patient feels, the more pain I feel so it is not something commonly used in our profession and on our planet. I am a fairly decent telepath, especially among my people, but I am a terrible telekenetic. Perhaps it is because I do not much find a need to practice the skill or perhaps I will always be unskilled. I do not know." She paused and sipped her coffee. "I wish to stretch my experience and skill level as a doctor and I cannot really do that on my home planet. Do you come from Earth, Dr. Webb?"
: : :
: : : Cadet Epoch, Doctor
: :
: : "Skills like that can certainly comein handly in our line of work, especially in crisis. I am certain you will have plenty of opportunities to practice them while in Star-fleet," she replied, hoping to reasure the Cadet. Epoch skills would certainly go a long way towards a good bedside manner.
: :
: : "I do," she replied taking a sip of her chocolate milk. "My parents were scientists. We lived in the Rocky moutains, a beautiful place. I grew up learning to rock climb and trail ride all over the mountains. Do you have any favorite childhood memories from Betazed?"
: :
: : Hillary was enjoying this conversation. She knew more about this cadet now then she had about several other cadets that had come under her.
: :
: : Lt. Webb, CMO
:
: "I have seen your Rocky Mountains. They are very beautiful. We have some like them on Betazed. It is much like Earth in the natural aspects though the vegetation is different. My brother and sister are very dear to me. There are many childhood memories that involve them and me. We were great explorers or space pirates or something similar and just as fantastical. We played like that for several years. Things changed when my parents died and my grandparents took us in. My grandparents are..." She paused trying to find the judicious descriptor, "formal. Playing took a very far backseat. My sister and brother were educated in politics and I did not have an interest. Since they were so involved, it gave me the freedom to do my own calling, being a doctor. Was it a calling for you as well?"
:
: Cadet Epoch, Doctor

"Not really,"she replied. "There wasn't any moment of shinning light or a dramatic even that made me decide. My parents were biologists. I learned much about life and how the world functions. I also learned to love working with people as we had many visitors in and out of our lab over the years. But they were few and far between. Medicine was a logical choice because I could work with people while using my love and skills in science."

"How did medicine become your calling?" she asked curious as to what motivated this cadet.
