: : : : : : : : : : : Kendra smiled on the inside as she watched Charles actions. He was so stiff in movement, and she was afraid his ridgidity would break the chair before five minutes were up. She wasn't sure yet if it was his nerves at play or he thought he was a Marine and not a security officer. She picked up a PaDD from her desk and pulled up his file. "I see here Ensign Beckett, that you have had a stellar Academy career. Tell me a little about why you joined Starfleet?"

: : : : : : : : : : A smile played at the corner of his mouth for a split second before he answered clearly and without hesitation. "One could say it's a genetic trait. It's what my mother claims anyway no matter how scientifically untrue that may be. Actually a family tradition ma'am . My grandfather is an admiral nearly ready for retirement , my father is a captain , and my aunt is a commander with talk of her soon to be promoted. " Lifting his eyebrows a bit he said "I would feel remiss in my duties so to speak if I hadn't joined."

: : : : : : : : : "Ah. It seems we are alike but also opposite, Ensign. I am the first and only one of my family in Star Fleet but I too, would have felt remiss in my duties if I hadn't joined." Kendra warmly replied. She noted the twitch, albeit very brief, and continued to ask the Ensign questions. "Was it also tradition for family members to be in Security?"

: : : : : : : : "With the exception of my Aunt yes. Security usually is the fast track to command. " Beckett said simply. "Mt Aunt just says she has the brains of the family as she's in science."

: : : : : : : "And is that why you joined Security? Out of Loyalty to family tradition and to get a fast track to command?" Kendra asked thoughtfully. She wondered if she was the only one these days who joined Security out of a strong need to protect and to make sure that she caught the people who deserved to be punished. If she was a civilian she would be a vigilante, but within Star Fleet, she was called 'a damn fine officer'.

: : : : : : Beckett raised an eyebrow and said ,"You do make it sound terribly self serving. On the whole though if I could figure out how little anti-matter particles interacted with normal matter I may have been an engineer."

: : : : : "Interesting." Kendra replied. "What else interestes you in your spare time, Ensign? I am sorry if any of my questions make you feel uncomfortable, I just want to be able to know my department crew inside and out. Feel free to ask my any questions too, I am an open book."

: : : : Without thought or pause Beckett answered , "My interests tend toward mixed martial arts, bow hunting, gardening .. roses of course, with a bit of a fascination in cosmology , and fencing ."

: : : "I enjoy gardening as well. My family helped run a farm when I was growing up. I was put in charge of the vegetable garden. I spent countless hours in the sun looking after my plants the old fashioned way. No water and weather control systems for my little piece of heaven." Kendra replied. "I have never tried fencing, but I think it would be fun."

: : : : Pausing he considered her offer to ask her a question . Women often offered you such opportunities , but they were rarely serious . He had found this out at an early age. "That's about it for me , not much really ."he finished.

: : : "You have no questions at all about me?" Kendra asked. She lit up in a smile. "How else are you going to get swift promotions if you don't know what kind of cake I would like for my birthday?"

: : With a perfectly straight face Beckett said ,"I imagine that launching interviews of people involved in recent birthday celebrations , a check to see if your mother had sent you any such gift, or a check into the most common purchases of your family around your birth date for the first sixteen years of your life could probably yield a likely result."

: Kendra smiled. "I highly doubt it Ensign. My family didn't really have extra money to purchase things. A lot of my gifts were homemade. And no recent celebrations either, in fact, the last 4 years I haven't had anyone to celebrate with. Work comes first and my family is too far away to see."

"Well then and there you have the answer ." Beckett replied with a small barely suppressed smile. "You wouldn't have a specific preference so the logical choice for a selection would be something safe and neutral .Chocolate cake with white icing. Having not had any sort of cerebration for so long it would quite probably assure the desired results."
