Esmee

Rank:
Civilian
Species:
Kalosian
Position label:
Barkeeper

Esmee’s people are originally from Kalos in the Beta Quadrant, in an area now controlled by the Romulan Star Empire. This planet lies in a system close to the Tranome Sar Sector; close to the border with the Klingon Empire and a disputed region. Her innocent, peaceful people were forced to leave their home world long ago because of persecution due to their physical appearance, starting when the Romulans first invaded their sector, after the time of the Romulan and Vulcan schism.

The Kalosians faced persecution from the outset of the Romulan’s arrival with measures to deprive their civil rights. Initially, Kalosians used their peculiar natural abilities to blend in. The pressures to leave increased with further measures designed for their extermination. Several factors determined the ebb and flow of emigration of Kalosians including the willingness of the Klingon Empire to admit Kalosian immigrants. Much later still, they were hunted down like animals and there were massacres of whole communities. A period of mass emigration began and Kalosians are now spread all around the Beta Quadrant, although rarely found in the Alpha Quadrant. To other Kalosians their departure constituted a protest against the discrimination and injustices they had suffered in their old homes and reflected their ardent desire for a place in which they could live independent and free lives.

Esmee does not remember her actual birthplace as her particular Kalosian clan travelled constantly. She knew both her parents though they have now died. Her father was the leader of their clan. She didn’t have many Kalosian friends growing up and was forced to make friends with other races. She often faced prejudice because of the reaction to her personal characteristics. She has many siblings; at least five brothers and four sisters, but they do not keep in touch. When she was young she married another Kalosian but they separated, and she has not had a partner since.

Esmee outwardly appears to be a beautiful thirty-something human female. She is slim and pale skinned, with high cheek-bones, full lips, long brown hair, green eyes, arched eyebrows, and long eyelashes. Her real age is indeterminate; but more than few hundred years, as evidenced by her encyclopaedic knowledge and wide ranging experiences. Her real appearance is also somewhat different and she has been frequently described as a “monster”.

Federation Standard is not her first language and she utilizes non-standard grammar and a formalized sentence construction. This includes inversion and irregular verb placement forms. Her physiology makes it hard for her to speak and pronounce without additional clicks and pops.  She understands and can translate many languages including Romulan and Klingon. She is a good listener.

She could be called a semi-pacifist; she believes that if the foe is willing to hurt others, then it is justified to respond with equal reasonable force. She will use violence but only to prevent further violence. She normally sides with the little man against the unjust and the unfair. This is a consequence of the experiences of her species.

She appears to have some limited psionic powers: limited telepathy (can sense empathy and surface emotions and has flashes of strong images), limited telekinesis (can move small items, break glasses), limited mind control (can push people by suggestion, and masks her own real appearance), limited precognition (can see close future events) and limited redaction (can heal minor injuries.) These are all abilities that the Kalosians developed to avoid and survive persecution by other races.

Esmee has lived most of her life trying to fit it, and to be something she wasn’t. As a consequence she has had a number of unusual occupations and lived in a number of different places. It gradually became harder and harder to move on somewhere new. She has since realised that most people are insecure, and yet desperately trying to fit in with the wrong crowd, when they should instead be standing out. Despite that, she still prefers to keep a low profile.

At some point Esmee won a fortune due to some successful business venture; at another point she lost the fortune in another failed business venture. Some of her business ventures have not been strictly legal. However, she is happy that they were always morally correct.

Esmee once worked for Starfleet Intelligence. She sheltered and helped people persecuted by the Romulan Empire and served as an intermediary between Starfleet Intelligence and Romulans seeking Vulcan unification. She gathered biographical intelligence by means of interpersonal contact and provided linguistic support.

She has often worked as a barkeep between other jobs. She enjoys meeting and talking to new people. Bartending is all about being a psychologist, sociologist, accountant, janitor, mediator, stock girl, comedian, server and rock star, as well as a mixologist.

All cameras and mirrors have been removed from the bar. Esmee will not allow any mirrors or cameras into the bar room. It is more than an idiosyncrasy, and it is a condition written into her employment contract. If any recording devices are brought into the bar they will be irreparably damaged, and any mirrors will be cracked.

Since her family were largely nomadic, Esmee travelled widely as a child, and has never stopped as she grew into adulthood. She lived on Earth shortly after humans first developed spaceflight, but left Earth before the start of the Romulan Wars. She travelled extensively over the next several hundred years. She had to flee from the Klingon Empire when relations between the United Federation of Planets degenerated in the 23rd Century. She then settled in the Alpha Quadrant. In the 24th Century, she visited Bajor before the Cardassian occupation began.

Esmee joined the Vanguard at the personal request of K'Mar Aldur.
