: : : : : : : : : : : Ensign sat in the security station, running an internal sweep, tracking those around the station. Blips on a map... was like watching paint dry. The job for now was learning the station's systems, locations, and people, and while she could study the diagrams and maps, it just wasn't the same as getting out and walking it on foot. "Alright," she murmured and grabbed herself a cup of coffee from the replicator, a large one, a PaDD in the other. =^=Ensign Beckett to Lieutenant Acel'ex. I'm going to make some rounds through the Station, get to know the layout and people better, if that's alright with you.=^= Her tone sounded a little bored, and indeed she was itching to do something besides sit at a console.

: : : : : : : : : : : The role of the security officer besides being combat and protection, was that of dealing with people. Knowing who you were dealing with and of course being able to read them. It was a skill that was somewhat close to a Councilor's work, but less friendly. It was like a poker game that doesn't really end either. But more than that, she suspected she'd be at the station for some time. Time to get to know the locals, and the floating base in space.

: : : : : : : Maria smiled and took off heading across the station to the Docking Ring. Soon she would find Dusty after having to work her way through a few Engineers working the area. "Ensign Trellis, I presume," she said with that seemingly ever-present smile. "Chief Acel'ex asked me to check up on you. I'm Ensign Beckett. Anything going on here I can help with?"

: : : : : : "Actually things are going pretty well, now that things have settled down, after the emergency, with that ship. Pleased to meet you, Ensign," said Dusty, smiling. "I only hope my Xelarian 'cycle' doesn't start prematurely, having been caught in the phaser crossfire recently. "Whenever 'Fa'il He'ek' starts, I end up being laid up, with symptoms resembling the Earth Flu, for around eight days and I don't like being indisposed, plus the achiness, particularly in my appendage, sucks." she added, motioning to her "V"-shaped, pipe-like appendage, at the base of her skull.

: : : : : Maria smiled and nodded. Most of the stuff related to Dusty's biology went over her head as she wasn't familiar with the species. "I see," she said, making a note to study up on Dusty next chance she got. "Pleasure to meet you too," she said with a smile. The phaser fire must have been before I came aboard, but not too long. I'm starting to think Station life isn't as quiet as I've heard. I mean phaser fights, bombings and ship collisions and all sorts of stuff."

: : : : "it can get dicey, at times. this just seemed to be one of those rare, one-crisis-after-another weeks, I suppose," quipped the Xelarian officer. "I'm hoping things will stay calm, for a while, at least, but that's wishful thinking in our business. I still have to do my 'name-change' rite, soon, according to Xelarian culture. It's long overdue."

: : : "I've never heard of Xelarians," she said. "Then again I've not met or heard of every single species in the galaxy either. Tell me about this ritual, if you would, Dusty." Maria was nothing if not an explorer, and while her specialty wasn't sciences, or cultures, she'd met so many different ones while traveling with her parents that learning about new people always sparked her interest.

: : "A name was given to me, upon infusion of Xelarian DNA, on Earth. You see, I am human, but infused with Xelarian DNA, as part of their 'purging' process', which uses humanoid hosts, to infuse, then purge the DNA, for later reinfusion to their own. The name, 'Trel'lis' is simply their way of identifying this appendage, the result of molecular mutation, caused by the catalytic energy beam, that transferred the DNA," Dusty began. "The 'renaming rite' can be invoke either immediately, or after the third 'Fa'il He'ek' cycle, which I experienced eight years ago. I must do this, before the fourth cycle, due in another year." Dusty then paused. "Since I will need two 'witnesses', I may need you, in addition to the Chief, when I get ready to conduct this rite, which will be this evening, after I get off shift. Lieutenant Acel'ex is already aware and will be joining me, in the office. It is very simply ceremony and easy to learn. Pulling out her PaDD, Ensign Trellis continued to explain.

Afterward Acel'ex, then you declare that you have witnessed my declaration and accept my new name. I then utter the Incantation of Acceptance, which effectively seals my new name and identity, in the Tol'lor Region and thus fully identifies me as Xelarian Dominant, thus accepted, by them upon my eventual death. Acel'ex then 'legalizes' my name-change, by submitting the application for Federation Court name-change, so it can be entered into Starfleet records, et cetera," explained Duty, handing Beckett a PaDD. "Go ahead and download the Witness declaration, along with the explanation of the Num'le, or name change rite."

: Beckett listened carefully and got lost partway through on it but took the PaDD wondering what the hell she just got volunteered into. But, she could tell it was something momentous and important to Dusty. "Alright," she said a little hesitantly, feeling a little lost on the subject. She'd met dozens of cultures and peoples on her travels and new things weren't unusual, but from what Dusty described the logic of it eluded her like trying to catch mercury with her bare hands.

: Idly she tucked the PaDD into the black elastic duty belt she wore the holster of her phaser II on, at the small of her back. "I'll have to look this over and all. Is there anything else you needed while I'm here, Dusty?"
