: : NE NC NPC and GM characters are someimes the bane of the casual player. For the more advanced cadets, here's how to tell them apart.
: :
: : NE = Nameless Ensign.
: : Anyone can make an NE. The person who makes an NE has total control over the NE. However, anyone can kill off an NE. A classic example is anyone not from the main cast or listed in the credits as a feature player who beams down with Captain Kirk in the original series. Or the guy in Star Trek Nemesis who's sucked thru the hole in the viewscreen. You're generally restricted to making an NE in the same department that you have a player character. NE's can be any rank and grade equal to your own or lower.
: :
: : NC = Nameless Cadet
: : As above for NE. These are Cadets for the Academy ships. They are great for filling slots that we don't have, like helmsperson, tranporter operator, dedicated shuttle pilot, etc as are the NE's on later, non academy ships.
: :
: : NPC:
: : The Non Player Character is sort of a secondary character for the player. A good example is family members that live with you on ship. Sometimes you can ask the CO of your ship to let you have a secondary character that you can sign off as. Alexander on TNG and DS9 is a good example of this. However, Jake and Nog, more integral to the show's story line, would be primary characters. I think, The GM generally will need your permission to do drastic things to your NPC's like kill them off.
: :
: : GM Characters:
: : These are NPC's that are totally controlled by the GM. While players can in fact kill off GM Characters under the right conditions, there could be severe reprecussions.

: OOC: NPC question. As anyone who has read especially my initial post knows, my character has a younger brother back on Earth who also intends to join Starfleet once he's of age. Would I be able to make him an NPC as a Starfleet officer, or would it be a better idea to just create a second character?

You can do either! As an NPC or as a secondary character, your brother will remain off the roster, in most cases. But, when you sign off as your character after you post? you will have the option to select the name of an NPC or secondary character as you prefer.
