Background:

Hewson’s parents were both tutors at Kneller Hall (Father on Trombone, Mother on Percussion), and as such, Phil spent much of his childhood on Campus around cadets aiming to enter the Starfleet Corps of Music. He started to learn to play from a young age, encouraged by his parents, tutored on the Tenor Horn in his early years by cadets on site, later under the man who would go on to be his mentor and future bandmaster, Kevin Ackford. As expected Hewson passed his musical modules with honours, and passed the non-musical modules with some of the highest marks that bandsmen had achieved. It was therefore no surprise that at 26 years old he was appointed Assistant Bandmaster and became a mentor himself.

When the Dominion War broke out, Starfleet needed all the soldiers it could muster. As such all bandsmen were assigned as medical support staff to the units they were attached to. Because Hewson was attached to the Marine Corps, he was constantly on the frontlines, with no time to continue to practice his music, as such after the war he remained in the Mobile Infantry. Hewson’s parents were both casualties of the Dominion War.

Phil undertook a number of distance learning courses from the Academy to supplement his existing qualifications and was soon assigned to a squad of cadets who were already qualified doctors, but required field training. Despite all cadets successfully completing their course, they were all killed in action prior to their graduation ceremony.

After being off duty for 5 weeks, Hewson was cleared for duty, however he did not feel that he could continue service in the Marine Corps, but found while serving as the CMO Columbia’s Chief Medical Officer, that he missed the way of life that being in Marines offered, so transferred back to the corps with the lowered rank of Sergeant.

Medical:

Hewson is in good health, suffering from no known allergies. After a recent altercation with a Borg, he had to have his left ear and many of his teeth replaced.

Psychological:

On stardate 03062.4, Hewson was relieved of duty, after being the sole member of his squad to survive a disastrous mission. Despite differing opinion amongst several counsellors, Hewson was cleared for duty on stardate 03073.0, although has since reported having flashbacks of that fateful mission.

Generally, Hewson is focused on his work, although life in the Marine Corps has been all he has known. Throughout his career, many counsellors noted that they sensed Phil was facing an ongoing battle in his mind and that he was trying to keep a secret. Since pursuing a relationship with fellow marine Steven Williams, Hewson has become more relaxed, almost as if he had feared what his friends and colleagues would think of him pursuing such a relationship.
