: : : : : : : : : : "In the meantime if you care to look around, there are some fascinating geological striations in the planetary sub-surface. Iron ore that as it is laid down angles itself to the planetary magnetic field forming a mosaic that would take your breath away." Jared chuckled as he leaned over to brush dust from his thick trousers. "If you're a geologist that is."

: : : : : : Jaya piped up "Well sounds like a plan." as she walked over to a couple of racks of samples that were still on the counter and looked for an empty box to put them into. "Make sure you enter into the log what you put in each box and then which crate the box goes in."

: : : : :
: : : : : Another voice came from nearby. "I thought I heard some racket going on. Jared, you need to send out memos to us who insist on our beauty rest." The figure was a slim Bajoran man with sandy brown tussles hair.
: : : : :
: : : : : "I'm Daren Kerl, Jared's lackey. He tells me where to core and I dig the holes. You'll be packing some of my fila-cores I believe. Or they will," he said, extending his hand to Seth.
: : : : :
: : : : : Jared spoke up, "Why don't you take her down to the ore strata. I can show the Captain some of the sights, such as the magnetic falls. That'll leave Dotto here to make sure nobody bangs up anything."

: : : : "Lt. Seth Jaya, CSO of the USS Uictorious." she replied extending her hand, "Pleased to meet you. And I would love to see the ore strata."

: : : Daren shook her hand. "After some months with these louts who couldn't appreciate a good Bajoran chant echoing through the tunnels it will be nice to have some cultured company." He stressed the word cultured with a grin. Now its a little ways but not far.
: : :
: : : He led her a ways, about 20 minutes or so of walking through a gradual descent until they came to a wide cavern. "These magma pipes made our job easy. Would have been easier if we could have convinced a horta to come down for a while but that was not to be." When Daren engaged the lighting, central in the chamber but focused on the strata, it revealed intermittent layers of a dull grey to black stone. While not 'even' in thickness even within the strata it did show clear layering.
: : :
: : : "We found this a couple months into our survey. We think it was partly magma layers intermixed with ash and sand from iron rich eruptions. The result shows in the filaments that the magnetic poles of the planet were constantly shifting." He angled the lights to shine off at an angle off of a cut section of the chamber wall. The reflections on the thin filaments sparkled at specific angles.

: : Jaya enjoyed her chat with Daren about Bajor, it was not often she could talk about home and everything that was going on their. To talk about the latest fashions and music, everthing about home. With response about cultured Jaya grinned back and said "I know what you mean."
: :
: : The conversation had been great and Jaya baely noticed how long it took to get the central chamber. "I can see from the walk if you are doing a proper investigation why it took months but these specimens are outstanding. Obviously everytime the poles shifted it throw up a great sand storm which is what caused the layers of sand in between everytime."
: :
: : She paused for a second looking at the magma pipes, "Daren, have you been able to determine the interval of the shifts of the poles or has it been truly random? Have you been able to determine how long it has been going on, is it just shifting N and S poles or is the location of the poles been moving as well?" So amazing as she stepped forward to take a closer look.

: "Our primary focus was that of mining viability of the principal ores. The study of the causalities have been more hobby craft than anything." He pointed out the thickness of the strata. "From what we've been able to gather is that there are two polar shifts that occur in a sequence. The orbit of Kordus II is irregular and elliptical. At the closest primary point it shifts the most - a true polar inversion. But in between there at the coordinate points of the orbit it is only a minor shift of the poles. So you see the large strata here and then the thinner layers in between."
:
: "How long have you been interested in this sort of thing?" he asked as she looked at them more closely. Daren tapped at a spot. "Here is the questionable thing. It doesn't happen on each orbit but only on some and we've not been able to pinpoint the precise when's of it, to present the right conditions for it. However it is at least a millennia between the shifts. We can see that here with this layering of strata and dating mechanisms. Any thoughts?"

"I got interested in geology as a kid, its what my mother does back on Bajor, its because of her and my brother I followed a carrer in science. But when you specialize in geology in Star Fleet and then ask for a ship posting you have to branch out quickley into other fields." Jaya said with her usual warm grin. She leaned in and pulled out her tricoder, "Yes I see what you mean about the minor shifts, as for the pole switch or even the minor shifts it is either something that happens by the gravitational pulls on the planet and how each orbit it actually changes the magnetic properties with in the overall geometry of the planet and only every so many orbits there is enough of a cumlative effect that the planet poles make a minor adjustment and then once a millenium or so the poles actually switch. The other possiblity is that there is an outside body or bodies that cause the magnetic properties of the poles to change or shift, the combined position and rotational properties of the other planets or maybe some astriods or comets that orbit the system and are only here periodically. Mind you for that to happen in one shot the external effects on the planet would be dramatic." she surmissed. "If I didn't enjoy space so much I would love to stay here and study it." Jaya added.
