Branwen has lasting effects from seeing her parents murdered in front of her at a very young age. Branwen is OCD and this at times can interfer with her work. History Branwen was born Latana of the 4th house of Betazed. Her mother (Laxana) and her consort had been together for many years. Latana's early childhood was happy and carefree. On her 5th birthday, Latana's parents had taken her for an outing and phaser fire erupted. Laxana pushed Latana out of the way while Devail attempted to protect them both. When the shooting stopped, Laxana and Devail were dead, dying in front of Latana.

Latana withdrew into herself and it was not until Lalana (aunt) and her husband Devlin arrived from Scotland that things changed. Lalana had found Latana in her bedroom, reaching out mentally for her parents and receiving nothing back. Latana had become withdrawn and depressed. When Lalana arrived and was able to return the empathic message, Latana began to come out of her shell. It was decided by the family elders that Latana would return to Scotland with Lalana and Devlin.

Upon arriving in Scotland, Latana's name was changed to Branwen MacCrae so that she would fit in better with the local children at St. Leonard's. Branwen often became overwhelmed by the emotions that she experienced at school and Lalana had to start teaching Branwen blocking techniques at a young age. It was during this first month that Branwen began displaying unusual behaviors. Lalana and Devlin were called to the school and informed that Branwen was counting the steps that she took, among other things. Branwen was obsessive in checking the doors and windows. Branwen had to have everything in a specific order in her desk or she would become very upset.

Lalana and Devlin found a counselor for Branwen, however Branwen shut down mentally and would not say anything. Branwen shut everything and everyone out of her world. Branwen was experiencing nightmares and the only one she would let comfort her was Lalana. Slowly Branwen began opening up again and became a successful student.

Branwen attended and graduated from St. Leonards College for primary and secondary school. Branwen then attened St. Andrew's college and obtained her medical degree before joining Star Fleet.
