Sorcha is a qualified fighter pilot, having found an early love for flying anything from the smallest shuttle to the largest starship. Her father Cedric encouraged her skills by often booking holodeck time with Sorcha to hone her skills. She easily passed her flight tests during the Academy. Though she was born on the USS Berlin during both her parents' tours of duty, she often spent time growing up on Earth with her paternal grandparents near Dungarvan, Ireland. Her grandparents' home became a welcome respite particularly when her parents' marriage began to unravel. It was spared from an all out divorce when Sorcha was twelve when her mother was killed in the line of duty. Ever since then though, despite her close relationship with her grandparents, she drifted away from her father. Her younger siblings don't understand the reason for the rift their older sister has with their father, but then they didn't overhear Cedric joking with friends one night that Sorcha's mother Aurora did him a favour by dying and sparing him the press of a nasty divorce. She never confronted her father over it either, something she regrets, but since that incident she refused to join him on any assignment. She resists any contact with him to this day, unable to face him.

During her time on the USS Hastings she met and married Lieutenant Commander William King, she gave birth to their first child shortly at the end of the Dominion War. As testament to the problems she was having with her father, he did not attend the wedding and her grandfather gave her away. Cedric succeeded in completely damaging any chance in reconciliation when Sorcha tried to bridge the rift shortly after her marriage to William, on his encouragement. He disproved immediately of his son-in-law, finding his career unsatisfactory and therefore unworthy of a Westenra. Sorcha hasn't spoken to him since.

She leads a happy life though with William, they have three children, Edana, Brian and Aurora. She gets along quite well with her younger siblings, talking to them regularly, simply choosing not to discuss the reasons for her rift with their father.

Those who meet Sorcha are often surprised to see that despite her obvious Betazoid heritage in her eyes, she speaks with a noticeable Irish accent.

Her children are with their father, as William commands a galaxy class starship the USS Asgard.

In addition to her piloting ability, she is a natural when it comes to languages and as such is a fairly good diplomat. Her first command was not the Columbia, but the USS Wellington and she also commanded the USS Alaska for a time as well.

Some often are impressed to see that she only served six months as a second officer on the USS Dante before being promoted to full commander and receiving the post of first officer on the USS Churchill. She received a rather speedy promotion for her actions in preventing the mutiny on the USS Dante from succeeding. She along with the deputy security officer Lieutenant Cassandra Rixan were instrumental in saving the life of the commanding officer and supressing the bulk of the mutineers.
