On my site to conquer this, I've utilised the Coherent Access module with some minor modifications does this.. Larry, you yourself might know of this module, but it allows for the "production" of an Editors List (Access to Edit) and a Viewers List...

If viewers are added then only they can view it along with the errors, I accomplished this by eliminating the Viewers list so that the Editors still existed rendering the ability to grant additional editors a-okay..
