: : : "Very interesting...so, if I'm understanding you correctly, Mr. Salat, what these microbes do is get under our skin - pun intended, mind you - and start to mimic our own cells' genetic structure while they aim to murder us. Is that it in a nutshell?"

: : : CMO
: :
: : "That is mostly accurate, the exception being that we have not had an indication of intended malevolence on the part of the microbes," Salat said in a deadpan tone. "All current actions of the microbes indicate a lack of intelligence and that they are merely acting on survival instincts the way the majority of parasites act when introduced into a host body."

: "Could I order you to loosen up a little?" Setik asked, halfway rhetorically. "Do we know why they seem to target the arteries?"
:
: CMO

"Loosen up? I am unfamiliar with that terminology," Salat said unphased. "As for the reason they target the arteries, I don't believe it is a conscious choice as I do not believe they have a consciousness. The arteries happen to be the area in human physiology where all of the blood routes through once every 4.7 minutes and therefore due to the frequency they return to that area of the body the more likely it is that would be where they would gain a purchase. If Ensign Koats had been a Klingon, I would expect that the microbes would have settled into one of his eight chambers of his heart since the time between beats would give them an opportunity in each chamber to settle and establish a foot hold."
