The symbiant Xye has had two previous hosts. The first was a male engineer by the name of Jaileth, who was well renowned across Trill for his skill in mechanics and warp propulsion theory. He had a reputation for his eccentric ideas and his unusual approach to everything, including life in general. He lived to a ripe old age, and his many experiences were then transferred when the symbiant was joined to a young quantum physicist named Lael.

Lael, the oldest daughter and pride of her family, was a meticulous and discerning young woman who always had a desire to be joined from her youth. She was very much admired and loved by her parents, and looked up to with great esteem by her baby sister Ianthe. Her passion for Quantum theory lead her to examine a wide range of research papers from eminent scientists on the subject, and her curiosity was peaked when she came across an article on quantum field propulsion by an eminent Brochaine scientist named Ahn-Akahi-Vahkana. Fascinated by the melding of quantum mechanics with Jaileths mastery of warp propulsion, she attended an interstellar conference on space travel engineering in the hopes of meeting a member of the Brochaine race, and to her surprise met up with the son of the very scientist who wrote the article, Ahl-Ahn-Vahkana. The two became friends and spent a long time discussing theories of melding warp drive with quantum field propulsion to form a much faster method of travel.

A short while after the conference Lael was involved in a serious shuttle accident in orbit of Trill. She was immediately rushed to hospital were her family came to see her. It soon became clear, however, that her injuries were to severe, and she would not recover. This news struck Ianthe, who had always relied on her sisters influence, very hard - up to that point Ianthe had been somewhat complicated and had appeared to others rebellious and awkward, but her sister always understood her quirks and believed in her. Now faced with losing that stabilising influence she felt protective towards lael and her memories. Lael also cared deeply for Xye and for her work and wanted to pass them on to someone she could trust implicitly, so she convinced Ianthe to take the symbiant. Ianthe had never desired to be joined, but, pressed by the moment and her connection with Lael, she agreed.

The next six months proved very difficult for Ianthe. While her rebellious streak had been tamed by the joining she still felt the need to escape from her family and the drive to continue her sisters work was very strong. After some thought she felt the best place to accomplish this was in Starfleet and so she enroled at the academy to become an engineer using Jaileths expertise to benefit her studies.

Thanks to Xye’s experience from its former host, Ianthe flew through the academy courses and passed with honours. Whilst on the course however, she heard that the Brochaine engineer Lael had met four years ago at the conference had since joined Starfleet himself. Remembering the work he and her sister had accomplished together she hoped that she could further there theories again with his assistance, and perhaps renew their friendship in the hope of connecting more with her much admired sister. With that in view she requested a posting on the same ship, the U.S.S Polaris.
