Korczak listened intently as the young Cadet spoke, watched her body language and took note of the claw deployment and retraction. He sat with his hands folded in his lap, and was silent while he gave her a moment to compose herself. After a few moments, he slowly stood up and walked to the replicator. There he retrieved a cup of black currant and lemon tea and a glass of cool water. Walking back to his chair, he sat the water in front of Cadet Bennet and held the saucer the tea cup was setting on in one hand and slowly took a sip, all the while looking at Bennet. After a few sips, he leaned forward and set the tea down on the low table and leaned back.

Finally, he spoke. His odd accent lent a strange cadence to his words, but his tone was nonjudgmental and conveyed a sense of concern, but not pity. “Cadet. You are obviously troubled. You have endured more than most in your time. But I have concerns, and and this point I am afraid that I will need to refer you to the Academy Health Center. My duty here is a unique one. If this were a ship in the main fleet, I would have the resources and leeway to offer you counseling and therapy. Her, my goal is much more straightforward and, unfortunately, much less engaging. Quite simply, I am here to assess whether or not a Cadet is fit for duty on a star ship in the main fleet. And from what I have seen, I cannot make that recommendation at this time. I will have to speak to the Captain with regards to next steps. Be assured that I will do whatever I can to assist you and to help you. And do not think that this is some kind of final decision. As I said, I must speak to the Captain. Would you be open to sitting down with both of us to discuss the matter? Perhaps there is another avenue we could pursue with is assistance…”

Catt sat down and taking the water drank it in one long pull.

“I likely have the largest file in the history of Cadets in the academy sir. The academy tests everything as you know. Including putting you in situations designed to find out what you fear.
But you know that.

My fear is losong control again. So when I am stressed and I have been under stress today. I can obsess about losing control. It colors everything. “,

She looked at the counsellor and sighed letting tension release.

“I think I have given you an image of who I was
Rather than who I am. If you need to speak to the Captain and you believe I am unfit to serve I will make no protest. “,

and she looked amused.

“The family group I mentioned at the academy will certainly agree with you. I’m a Caitan and I chose to be alone with aliens rather in a uncomfortable family bond where I can have no role other than little sister. “,

And she flicked an ear.

“i will make an effort to portray myself as who I am rather then as what I fear I could be sir. “

And she placed the glass down on the table and sat back properly. Wincing slightly as her tail made the seat uncomfortable.

Watching her body language, her tone and inflection, Korczak remained passive while listening. “Perhaps try the couch next time. It may be more comfortable with your physiology.” he said in a friendly manner. “Now, as to you

“I will be speaking to the Captain, of that I am simply bound by the rules and conventions of my role on board. But I do appreciate your candor, Cadet. And I will say that I am slightly less concerned than I was before. That being said; I find that your constant fear of losing control under stress to be very concerning. This - ” and he gestured broadly around the room indicating the ship in general, “- is a stressful life. It is filled with uncertainty, hard work, long periods of isolation, and intense life or death situations. These are not only potential possibilities, Cadet… they are certainties. Stress, and great levels of it, are a part of this career. If you are concerned about how you will react under those conditions, well… then so am I. Does that makes sense to you?”

Catt nodded,

” Of course sir. To do less would not be logical. “,

And she cocked her head a moment. Then stood.

“If we are done sir i need to track down my department head and report in. “

And she desperately wanted to clean up before she did so. For all she didnt think of herself as a proper Caitan, she still shared the need to indulge in vanity grooming to ease frayed nerves.

Korczak sat back and simply looked at her, his face still blank and his eyes looking at directly at her. “If you feel we are done, then I suppose we are. Dismissed, Cadet. But I am here if you wish to talk.”

Korczak, CNS

Paused. As she stood,

“Is that what we were doing? Hardly seems so. You asked questions and formed judgements based on the answers. But it wasn’t talking. Not in any way that is a normal conversation. The entire time we were here you have been keeping your body language hidden. Or at least you have tried to.”,
She flicked an ear.

“Your not Caitan. So your not expected to br polite. And I’ve grown used to being treated like a inferrior or defective. I’ve grown used, to beong judged.”

And she sighed.

“Sorry sir. Its wrong of me to apply Caitan standarrds to you. Particularly when i cant live up to them myself.”,

And she waited for a reply or a dismisal.

Korczak merely looked at her, the same expressionless face behind spectacles. For a moment, he said nothing. Finally, he said “No, I am not Caitan. I am human. And a core lesson you should have picked up from the Academy is that we do not apply racial standards to each other. We are all unique in our ways. Yet all of us have something in common. A desire to serve as we see we can. An acknowledgment that while we may appear to have differences our core ideologies are, if not the same, at least similar enough to give us common ground.” And the he removed the glasses from his face and for the first time showed a facial expression… displeasure. With a scowl, he continued. “I do not keep my body language ‘hidden’, Cadet. I remain passive to ensure that anyone I am dealing with specifically does not feel judged or distracted by what I may ‘think’. I did not form judgments, Cadet. I make assessments based on what you say, how you say it, and how you react to questions. I am qualified to make these assessments based on many years of education, training, and experience. If you feel as if I have treated you as, you said, and ‘inferior’ or ‘defective’; then I am truly sorry. But I do not see that as actually happening, Cadet. What I do see as happening is you manifesting feelings of inferiority and defensiveness at very frequent and close intervals. Feelings that, by the way, I see no basis for in your performance evaluations or grades.” and he stopped speaking and the face went back immediately to the blank, expressionless appearance that it normally was. “Now. If you feel as if we are done, then I will reiterate that you free to go. If you feel that there may be something you wish to add to the… discussion… then by all means take a seat on the couch or wherever you would feel most comfortable and we can talk. The choice is yours, Cadet. No one else’s.”

Korczak, CNS

Sighed headed for the door and stopped at yhe threshold.

“I.D.I.C. sir. I appologised for judging your attempt to be unreadsble by Caitan stsndards.
But any species that uses body language, Posture and scent as half of thier communication is going to assume ill intent unless you allow a more open display. It is not every species that follows Vulcan philosophies.
And to be honest sir not every member of the Federation follows it either. The inventors of I.D.I.C. are not its best followers. In any case sir its not that I am insulted by you actually. Rathet I am insulted by my own scent. It has been a hard day and scent, Body language and other factors your species do not pay attention to all factor into comunication. I have been discussing my own failingd. My most disttessing moments in life since I reported to sickbay before I came to see you.”

And she sighed as she suspected all a human would smell is the faint flowery scent that regulations allowed her to wear.

“I realise also that i have made a bad impresdion. I judge myself to harshly I am told and it colors my words when I am forced to reflect upon myself. I do not dislike you. I do not leave brcause of anything you have done. I also will not discuss myself further. I do not like who I was and this may of been required by regulations. But i need to clean up and be myself again.”,

And she didnt wait for a reply. She had been dismissed. And once out in the corridor she could finally scrunch up her nose and sneeze.
And as she headed for her quarters she reflected on how she should of followed her instincts and showered before seeing the councilor. But she had been walking past his door when the call for het had gone out.

Korczak watched the door close as the Cadet left. After a moment of quiet, he sighed and shook his head. Standing, he walked around the desk and took a seat. He made the appropriate entries in Bennet’s file. Before he hit the command to submit it to the Academy, he paused. Sighing again, he pressed his commbadge. =/\= Counselor to Captain. Sir, if you have a moment I need to speak with you in my office. =/\=
