“His pretty strong minded, so if his got himself in a situation, he’ll hopefully get out of it - but not hearing anything for five years, especially with the technology that’s around now.” He thought a moment. “I mean if his been captured by pirates, or if his ship is dead in space, finding out what happened may lead to further information; though I’m not going on a personal manhunt, if our paths cross then hopefully I can get some answers,” he concluded

Nijix absorbed his story then chose her words carefully. Five years were a long time and there was explanation left, one which might cause Cadet Starr to become angry.

“There’s also one other, unsavory option. Sometimes experiences or personal choice makes an individual want to vanish. If you don’t object, would you tell me about your brother’s relationship with your family and yourself?”

She needed to rule out the family as the possible cause for the brother’s reason to disappear. After the words slipped from her lips, she inwardly braced herself for the outcome and if the Cadet chose to let his emotions rule his common sense. Her expression remained underneath the mask, but she empathized with the loss. Not because she ever experienced it. Raji had been given cases of missing individuals, from children to adults, and knew time was critical. After twenty-four hours, the victim usually was never found again.

“Well, the fact that he told us he was leaving and would be in contact soon makes it seem something is up. My mother and father waited for a year, and I just kept hoping. He left on good terms with us, in fact we were excited, the first Starr to leave Earth. They were proud of him, until he didn’t contact us. Even five years later, that communication never arrived.” Simon replied. One thing was obvious: this wasn’t the first time Starr had told this to someone. More than anything the tone of his voice suggested worry, more than anger.

“I’ve kept it contact with mum and dad myself, and they have yet to hear anything either. So, obviously when I said I was also going to leave the planet, they were concerned I would also stop contacting them. They don’t feel so worried now that I have sent them communications within reasonable limits from my quarters, and that we are still talking. They, like myself are worried” he continued. “Due to the excitement he had when he left, him not contacting us is out of character for Tom. I honestly don’t expect to find him - it’s a large galaxy, after all. Just if our paths cross, or a sign of what happened to him presents itself, at least I’ll be able to tell the rest of the family somethimg.” He shrugged, though true, there was a large part of him that wished that sign came to him.

Nijix inhaled as she settled back into her chair. A few strands of loose bands fell into her bright blue eyes causing her to close them briefly. She casually pulled them from her sight and curled them behind her ear, absorbing the story being fed to her. So little information, but that wasn’t the cadet’s fault. It was the reason he followed his brother.

She asked a long shot question, “Did he mention what ship he was assigned to before he left?”

It took everything in her not to immediately reach for her PADD and pull up everything she could find over the cadet’s brother.

The story had tugged at her heart, but she drew on Raji’s experience to form an emotional barrier. It didn’t dampen her desire to want to help the Cadet. Some individuals often assumed that a host was no longer an individual. This was completely false. Each host had their own knowledge, experience and flavor to bestow upon the symbiote. She was not, or ever would become, Raji.
