Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Logic in. Feeling out. His parents had drilled this into him from the moment he could last remember. The time he spent among the humans made it almost necessary to meditate every day. He didn’t always have to sleep, but he needed to focus himself. He had always found them fascinating just like many of the other races. They were all always so … animated. Vulcans used to be an incredibly emotional species until they began to suppress their feelings for science and logic. Growing up he had an affinity for the sciences and mathematics and it was embraced in the Vulcan Science Academy. Unlike most Vulcans he didn’t really mind a slight bit of emotion. In ways it felt kind of .. exhilarating to feel such depth, granted he would never tell a soul that he didn’t trust with such knowledge.

A voice from in front of him slightly broke his concentration. “Umm .. Lieutenant T’Kam sir, we’re about 5 minutes out from the USS Challenger.” T’Kam was sitting on the floor of the shuttlecraft, crosslegged, with his hands resting on his knees. He slowly opened his eyes and looked up at the Ensign who was piloting the shuttle. “Thank you Ensign. Please ensure that we follow proper Starfleet protocol for docking procedures. I will ready my belongings.” He leaned forward, placing his hands on the floor to shift his legs out from under him and stood up. He had a small bag of personal belongings, mostly religious relics to focus on during his meditations along with a PaDD containing his orders.

Once they had entered the docking bay and touched down he looked down at his uniform to ensure that everything was in order. Shirt tucked, everything aligned, pips in place. He stepped off the shuttle followed by the Ensign who would be taking the rest of the day off to recover before departing back to the ship he had originally came from. He abruptly stopped and turned towards the Ensign. “Ensign. I would like to thank you for the safe transport and..” He tilted his head slightly, “.. company. It was good to learn more about you. Safe travels on your way back as well.” He held up his hand and in Vulcan custom with his index and middle finger together split in the middle with his ring finger and pinky joined on the other side. “Live long and prosper.” With a small nod and a thank you from the Ensign he stepped through the door as it hissed into the hallway of the Challenger. It had been only a short while since he entered the Officer Exchange Program with Starfleet, but every day he spent was always more interesting than the last. Now he just had to get things started by meeting with the XO, checking in at medical, and be evaluated by their counselor. He stepped off to the left and started on his way.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Catt wad waiting when the new dept head stepped off the shuttle. Her older uniform impecable dispite her shedding. The red tunic over a blue turtleneck with black trousers looking crisp and starched. Her ears eagerly upright and her tail under control the Caitan Cadet stepped forward and attempted to take the officers bags.

“Welcome aboard sir.”, she said and waited for his responce.

He immediately recognized the cadet red from the briefing on one of his PaDD’s that he had been reading in the shuttle for his assignment to the USS Challenger. The blue underneath indicated that she was a Cadet of the sciences. He had never really seen a Caitan before, but he had heard about them and their diversity. “Good afternoon Cadet.” He noticed that she had started making a motion towards the two bags he was carrying, but stopped her part way. “That won’t be necessary, I am capa-” It was unusual for a Vulcan to stop mid sentence unless they were being interrupted, however this interruption was in his mind. He didn’t want to be considered as rude or impolite on his first day, let alone his first minute on the vessel he had just been assigned to as the department head for the very cadet in front of him. He held out the bag that he was carrying in his right hand, which happened to be the lighter of the two and kept the other slung over his left shoulder. “You may take this one. If you’d like.”

Seeking to make a small bit of conversation before they headed anywhere, introductions must be made. At least he was sure that’s what most cultures did. “I am Lieutenant T’Kam. I’ve just been assigned to this vessel as the Chief Science Officer, might I ask your name?”

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Catt noticed the hesitation and flicked an ear but otherwise made no notice. She took the bag that was offered her and nodded as Lt T’Kam introduced himself.
“Cadet, Catt Bennet sir. Xenobiology and Geology. I specialize in Flora and ariable soil mostly.”,
Had she been talking to a human she would of added a joke. That she was unusually short and young looking as well as not having the usual Caitan coloration hadn’t been remarked upon so she imagined he was not familiar with her felinesque species.
“I would offer to lead you to your quarters but it’s actually my first day on board. I set my padd to inform me when the chief of sciences was available so it informed me of your imminent arrival.”,
Her ears drooped a bit as she consulted her padd for directions.
“Didn’t want your only greeting to be from Security sir. “,

Somewhat impressed with himself for once, he actually believed he recognized this as a joke, he nodded with a faint smile, “You would be correct. A visit from Security would be most unfortunate stepping off from a shuttle.” He re-adjusted the bag strapped over his left shoulder and glanced about the immediate area to make sure he wasn’t forgetting anything. “My specialty fields are Warp Theory and Astrophysics, though I do know a variety of other fields, just not to an expert’s extent. It will also be my first day here as well, so we are in unison on that front.”

She brightened and her ears lifted and with a bright smile she mrrrs.
“Computer. Holocharacter. Helpful ensign guide.”, and she looked back to the officer. “One of the first class of ships with holo-emitters on the entire ship sir.”
And as the NE security holoensign formed it said.
“How may I be of service?”,
That the NE holoperson was human wasn’t to much of a surprise.

“Holo-emitters on every deck? Fascinating. I do wonder what the Science Labs will contain now.” He then turned his attention to their holo-guide. “Crew quarters please, the room designated for Lieutenant T’Kam.”

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Catt walked beside the Lt. As they followed the holohraphic crewman into a turbolift it did not take long for them to arrive in the officer country part of the crew decks. Mostly she was quiet as was her habit she moved without any discernible noise.
“Sadly sir I have been chasing one meeting after the other. Medical. Ships councilor the XO, though we haven’t had a official meeting as yet. There was a presentation on the station we were required to attend as well. So as yet I have not been able to see the labs.”
Her voice was hardly more than a loud whisper as was usual for her species. Though by her species standards she was talking loudly, intrusively. But few species could hear polite Caitan speech levels over ambient noise.
Vulcans were possible one of the species that could and she felt momentary distress that she might be offending him.Catt’s ear flicked and her tail tip twitched as she looked for any sign she might be offensively loud to him.

T’Kam had paid no mind to the volume of her speech as he had grown somewhat accustomed to the way the Human’s loud boisterous speech was so it was definitely welcome amongst the chaos of noise that surrounded them in certain parts of the hallways. “I can relate to how that must be. I will be .. ‘chasing’ .. these meetings down myself shortly. After setting my personal belongings aside, my first priority is to meet with the Captain of this vessel to report for my assignment.” He looked down and to the side where she was following with a slightly quirked eyebrow. “Perhaps then we could set aside some time afterwards and figure out where your goals lie aboard this vessel? Would that be acceptable?” His voice was slightly lowered as they were not near any groups of gossiping crewmembers in the hallway as he knew how sensitive Caitian ears can be.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Catt smiled nodded any stood as tall as she could. This of course still put her eyes level with the Vulcan’s chest. So she tilted her face upwards to meet his gaze.

“Of course sir. It will be a distinct pleasure to discuss my duties on the ship. Regulations of course require us to have a formal meeting in any case. You are as yet my direct superior in the chain of command unless you assign a project director over me. Not that as a cadet anyone else can be of lower rank than myself. In any case sir my final thesis at the academy was on terraforming polluted and otherwise infertile soils damaged by industrial accidents or neglect. I should like a chance to continue that work if possible. I will however prioritize what I am assigned and work on my project in my spare time.”

And she stopped as the holo-ensign stopped before a door with Lt. T’Kam’s nameplate. She offered the Lt. His bag making no move to follow him in unless invited.

IC: The Vulcan Lieutenant gazed upon the nameplate for a moment before looking over and grasping the handles of his bag that she had passed back over. “That is a very ambitious thesis, I’m sure it will prove fruitful in cases where these accidents happen. It damages both the economy of life of a planet where this situations occur.” He pressed the entrance button and the doors of his quarters hissed open. He took a minute to peer inside wondering how he could make it feel less .. cold for a matter of words. Not that he had a huge objection against the standard Starfleet grey. This would only be his place to sleep when required and meditate, not much more. “We should plan for a formal meeting. 0800 Tomorrow should be sound?”

“Now, if you’ll excuse me Cadet I have to get ready for my meeting with the Captain. You are dismissed and may carry on about your day.” With that being said he stepped into his room, but stopped short one step in and turned around before she had a chance to go anywhere. “Cadet. I thank you for the escort to my quarters. I have enjoyed our conversation and look forward to our meeting tomorrow.” He inclined his head in a short nod to give respect to the Caitian Cadet that had walked with him all the way from the shuttlebay.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Catt had turned to go but stopped as the CSO spoke again. She flicked an ear and turned her head to face him. She caught the slightest hint of something in his expression or stance. Vulcans were very hard to read using body language so she didn’t quite trust what she had thought she had read off him.

“That would be acceptable sir. I am at your disposal at any time and I tend to be awake well before what on a planet would be sunrise in any case.”,

She couldn’t help but notice the drab grey office and quarters and she thought what she had read off him made sense if applied to the context of the rooms blandness.

“The ship is in a sence a giant holographic chamber sir. I imagine that personal decorations suited to the occupant could be applied with a bit of creative effort. As long as one was diligent about turning the program off when exiting the power use would likely not be noticable till it can be replace with actual artifacts.”,

And she smiled and waited for the door to shut before she left.
