“Deck Six: Sickbay,” Rhese said as he entered the turbolift. The doors hissed closed and the lift began to move. Slowly but surely, Bowman was beginning to get the hang of navigating himself around the Challenger, though he still had a lot left to see. He’d had his personal belongings beamed directly to his quarters, and upon arriving onboard had opted to proceed with his required check-ins. “There will be plenty of time to settle in,” he thought to himself, as the lift slowed to a halt. The doors hissed open and Bowman began to make his way to the ship’s main Sickbay; mentally making note of the distance from the lift as he walked. A moment later and he found himself arriving to a set of doors labeled “Main Sickbay,” which hissed open upon his approach. Bowman entered, eyes wide with excitement as he scanned the room. “How impressive!” he thought to himself, as he noted the advanced nature of this state-of-the-art facility. He paused for a moment to take it all in, and then noticed a few empty chairs along the wall near the entrance; so he went over to one and sat down to wait for the next available doctor. His face beamed as he smiled to himself, still in awe at the vast array of tools and equipment available to the medical staff. He found himself thinking: “If this is the Sickbay, I can’t wait to see the science lab!

Max was in sickbay near a vacant biobed. Though in the fleet things like the refilling of hyposprays would fall to a nurse or medic, Max was tending to the task himself. It was an essential part of training since a doctor could not always be assured that there would always be a nurse or medic nearby to assist. He didn’t mind it. It provided an almost meditative break from his heavily interpersonal work in sickbay. Wearing a blue shirt like Bowman as well as the insignia of a Cadet First Class, Max was easily identifiable as a peer. Though it was his labcoat that indicated he was not a fellow visitor to the clinic.

Max did not stop what he was doing but did glance quickly to Bowman. “How can we help you today, shipmate?” he asked in a friendly though clinically professional tone.

Bowman looked towards the man as the man spoke. He’d not even been sitting for a moment; it was as if the man before him seemed to be aware of the entire room, even while he was focused on a single task within it. Bowman stood, then, and took a step forward. “I’m Cadet Rhese Bowman, reporting for my pre-service medical exam… Doctor…?” Bowman wasn’t sure, as the man had been tending to the duties of the sickbay in general, whether or not the man addressing him was a doctor; but the lab coat, at least, identified him as a medical staff member. Rhese didn’t want to assume. He did, however, hope that the way he’d trailed off with his query had only indicated that he was interested in the name of the person to whom he was now speaking, rather than point to his uncertainty as to the man’s profession as well.

Max was, indeed, aware of the goings on in sickbay. It was his job to know these things, at least during his shift, and he smiled as he set the last hypospray into its place before turning to Bowman.

“Dr. Woolley. But we’re both on the level,” Max said with a smile, tapping the cadet insignia on his own collar. Max was certainly a bit more casual with his fellow cadets than with senior officers, though he wasn’t willing to let his professionalism drop off completely. There would be a time for personal introductions later at the lounge or the mess hall. “Come on over,” Max said, gesturing to the vacant biobed.
