“No, nothing recent,” Rhese said. “Back on my family’s homestead, I used to wake up with some soreness from the work I’d done the day before, but my father always used to tell me that ‘Hard work is good for the soul, but hard on the body,’” he volunteered. “But I’ve been in good health since my admissions physical at the Academy,” Bowman continued. “Haven’t even caught a cold!” Rhese said with a slight open-armed gesture and a smile; an obvious attempt to make a joke.

Max looked back at Rhese with a slight smile. “Ahh, homestead. Farm boy?” Max asked before moving his eyes back to his scan. He offered a slight smile at the cold comment. As his scan reached his feet, Max noted the reading and sent the results to his PaDD before closing the tricorder and placing it in his lab coat pocket once again. Max was not the greatest conversationalist. That suited him well in the field studying plants. Though, as a physician he was attempting to work on his small talk to cultivate a more personable bedside manner.

“Yep! I grew up on a farm, of sorts anyway, in Alaska. Most of it was far too cold half the year to grow anything; though. But we had some greenhouses where we did grow stuff even into the winter months.” Rhese didn’t want to babble, as it seemed that the doctor might have had something on his mind; but he couldn’t be sure. At least, Bowman decided, he did seem to be almost completely focused on his work. “But it was always interesting,” Bowman added quickly. “Helped me decide to pursue a career in Botany, at any rate,” he said with a smile.

Max’s ears perked up at hearing that Rhese was a botanist. “I, too, started down the road to botany before I pursued medicine. I was a few years into my PhD when I decided to take my career in a different direction and apply to medical school,” Max said, almost immediately then concluding his scan and speaking before Rhese had the opportunity to respond. “Well then, everything appears in order. I’ll sign off on your boarding physical and you’re all set.”

Max said. It was fairly clear from his tone and mannerisms that he wasn’t intending to be rude. His tone was light, his movements slow and deliberate. He was being, for lack of a better word, clinical. Though he wanted to convey enough personal information to help his patient feel at ease and give them a kicking off point should they ever bump into one another in the lounge.

“Unless, of course, you have any questions I can answer?”

Fascinating!” Rhese thought to himself. “Maybe I can come pick his brain when I run into a dead end on a project,” Bowman concluded.

“Nope. Unless you know where the best replicator on board is located, at any rate!” Rhese said, jokingly. “After I see Dr. Korczak and get settled into my quarters, I’ve got to get some grub.” Rhese was starting to feel slightly hungry. He’d eaten before boarding the shuttle over to the Challenger, but as he’d so far been focused solely on completing his required pre-service check-ins, he had barely given his stomach a second thought. Indeed, all he’d had since boarding was the Tarkalean tea in Lieutenant T’Kam’s office.

“Very well then. I consecrate thee fit for duty” Max said with a slight smirk before officially signing off on Rhese’s physical on his PaDD. “Best of luck with your onboarding, shipmate. Maybe I’ll see you around the lounge or something.”

Max tapped away at his PaDD as he spoke, content to look up again only when it was time for his final words to his newest shipmate, lest he think the good doctor was an antisocial sort.

“Thanks!” Bowman quipped as he hopped off the biobed. “Don’t work too hard, doc!” Rhese said, almost jokingly, with a raised eyebrow. He headed for the door.
