Simon was also surprised at the sudden waft of food that tingled his nose. It was a rare occasion, and it made it that much more intriguing. “Thank you, counselor” he said when the Korczak offered the food to the table. He took a modest portion, though would be enough for his height and weight in a doctor’s eyes. Starr was a careful eater, making sure he didn’t overeat or undereat. He had to keep himself fit for duty, and out of all the departments - Security officers needed to be the most physical. He thought to himself he would get some training done later as well, so considered that in his intake.

“Well, I must admit, though I don’t specialize in botany - I did grow up on a farm, so it is very interesting to hear about” Starr smiled “And if your offering Rhese, I forgot to pick up a water while I was at the replicator myself” he replied to Bowman’s offer.

Max reached over and grabbed a perogie. “Thanks Commander. But I’ve got to ask, how come you were lucky enough to grab some real food?” It had been a while since he had eaten real food, instead of replicated. You got used to the replicated food after a while, if nothing else, the consistency was nice. But it was never the same, it always was sort of bland.

Korczak smiled slightly and said “Care package from my mother. She made them herself. I do recommend the sauerkraut.” and he took a bite of a cabbage-stuffed morsel. He didn’t plan on further explanation as to exactly how the care package was sent to him, not that it was anything extraordinary, but he knew a question would probably be forthcoming.

As if on cue, Starr asked “And how did the food get to the ship? It couldn’t have been via the teleporters, the biofilters would have prevented it,” as he thought to himself it was probably someone visiting via shuttle. Again, this wouldn’t explain how the food was also hot, but lacking the taste of something be reheated. He would be dishonest if he said he wasn’t curious, and as a security officer, Starr saw that if real food could get around filters, then things less innocent may also be able to get through them. He was ready to contact Engineering if there was indeed any issues, and awaited Korczak’s response before deciding the best course of action.

Korczak nodded in agreement. “You are correct. The food would have been flagged by the transporters.” and washed the bite of perogi down. “So if it didn’t come via transporter, and we haven’t had a any visitors, how do you Cadets think it made it’s way aboard?” he asked quizzically. He wondered what scenarios they would come up with. All them would probably be much more complicated and interesting than the truth.

Max leaned back in his chair and grinned, he was curious to see what the cadets would come up with. Part of their training was problem solving, and this was definitely a fun way to solve a problem.

He reached over and stabbed his fork into the sauerkraut. He took a bite as he watched to see who would guess next. “That is good.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

Korczak inclined his head to the XO and said “Try the potato next.” with a slight polite smile.

Starr thought for a few moments, thinking of everything he could, then instantly ruling it out. He could have bought it with him, but the food would be off if that was the case. It could have been during the visit to the station, but that then leaves how it arrived there in the first place. He looked towards the two scientists to see if they had any ideas.

Sat back and thought about the riddle of the fresh food. Fresh of course was a relative term as fresh was anything that was picked or otherwise prepared in a variable timeframes dependent on the speed in which various foods decayed. Given that preservation techniques varied. From planet to planet.
“As far as how it got past biofilters. Biofilters only respond to harmful contaminants. Disease, parasites. Or certain harmful compounds and items that transporters can not handle due to radioactivity. The transporter would refuse to lock on to that. None of those would be present in food stuffs. Along of what is transported is of course on record but food. Cloth or any number of tools would not trigger a security alert. But being as it is implied that the Counsilor did not bring the food aboard via transporter I would presume it came aboard through the main docking hatch as we are presently physically docked to the station. It is a possibility that the councilors parents reside on the station. It is also possible that the ingredients were shipped to the station and prepared there. I however there are to many variables that can not be accounted for for more than a guess. There is no logical solution to this as a riddle.” She whispered as she eyed what was left on her plate.
“I believe I have eaten my fill. None of these are foods that are typical of my diet. The experience of them has been pleasing. Again thank you sir.” She said inclining her head to the councilor.

Korczak inclined his head in return, the slight smile still there. “You are most welcome, Cadet.” and then turned to the table in general. “Cadet Bennet is partially correct. It did arrive through the docking hatch. But no, my parents do not reside on the station. I am almost certain neither of them has ever been here. And as I said, my mother did make these herself. So do go on, Cadets. While I did not anticipate this being a lesson in logic, merely a simple treat, I do find the turn quite intriguing.” and he took a sip of his drink.
