This was a rather simple question for T’Kam as he began to explain, “For learning primarily. Humans are fascinating creatures. They are simple and yet complex. I am also an individual of Science. Though I have studied through most of my childhood at the Vulcan Learning Center, the Vulcan Science Directorate and High Command are extremely sought after positions that, in turn, do require a bit of political agenda in order to acquire. I, however, lack the affinity for politics as I personally have a distaste for the way it is sometimes handled. That was about when I had heard about the Officer Exchange Program through a professor and the possibilities of learning more about Science on a Starfleet vessel seemed a much easier approach to accomplish my goals. I would also be able to learn more about other species at the same time to expand my cultural knowledge. It was .. how do they say it .. ‘an eye for an eye’?” He frowned slightly trying to remember. “No that is incorrect .. ‘two birds with one stone’ I think it is?” He still had some difficulty appropriating local phrases, but he kept trying to practice them all the same.

“You got it,” Bowman said encouragingly. He thought it odd that a Vulcan would put much thought into human idioms – indeed, this was the first Vulcan Rhese had ever met who did so. Though, Bowman appreciated the effort, given what T’Kam had just shared with him. Rhese himself faced more than one issue of his own trying to ‘fit in’ when he moved to San Fansisco; a few of the other cadets in his class seemed to delight in pointing out his ‘northern’ inflections, though they might have just felt that they made Bowman more endearing. So again, Rhese felt a sense of kindredness. He believed he was going to enjoy working for – and with – this Vulcan. “I can understand that,” Bowman continued. “It even seems quite logical to me, sir,” he added with a smile. He reached for his cup – though as he was still making eye contact, he hadn’t been concentrating as much as he had been in his previous attempts – and his hand nudged it out of place slightly instead of simply picking it up. While it didn’t cause a spill or make a mess, it did cause the expression on Bowman’s face to change suddenly; the smile was replaced by the slight frown of disappointment, as Rhese’s face blushed lightly. “Watch yourself, Bowman!” he thought to himself. He took hold of the cup, and then deliberately took a quick sip and returned the cup to its appointed place on the desk. He looked back up to the Vulcan, then, and smiled in spite of himself. “Sorry, sir. I don’t mean to be nervous. It’s just that… Oh. Permission to speak freely?”

OOC: Mike, i’m just attempting to introduce the character’s (sometimes) clumsiness. i’ve intended for him to be something of a cross between Anton Yelchin’s “Checkov” and Lycia Naff’s “Sonya Gomez” with regard to his personality and physical coordination (respectively). :)

OOC: Bumping for whenever Mike gets to come back..

OOC: Sorry work has been a non-stop nightmare lately lol .. I’m basically in a sink or swim kind of situation right now with the new job. Have about 2 weeks to learn the rest of the 25 company products when I’ve basically joined at the beginning of November to be able to give demos on. No pressure, right?

IC: “Relax, Cadet. The formal part of this meeting has concluded for the most part.” T’Kam said calmly, reflecting no demeanor what-so-ever as he took another sip of his drink. He wondered what had this human so nervous, surely dealing with other officers would be common place at the Academy at least he remembered interacting with a few officers for the short time he spent there and felt no apprehension himself. “And permission granted, feel free to speak freely.” He set his cup down again, curious as to what the Cadet would inquire about.

Lt. T’Kam (CSO)

OOC: No worries. Glad to see you’re back, if only for the moment! Hang in there!

IC: “It’s just that… I can be a bit of a klutz at times. I was never as physically coordinated as my little brother was, which was one of the reasons why I didn’t like going on the hunts with my father, and he did. I usually slipped, or dropped something accidentally, and would scare away our game,” Rhese admitted. “Over time it didn’t really become more of an issue, because… well, I stayed home and tended to the greenhouses and helped Mom. But, I at least wanted you to be aware. It seems I’m always getting a little nervous about slipping up again at some random moment,” Bowman said sullenly.

“Do not worry. Making mistakes is part of the scientific process.” He raised one of his eyebrows in somewhat of a matter of fact manner as he continued, “Several scholars in Vulcan’s history, and from the few things that I have read, many of Earth’s scholars have made mistakes as well. If I recall correctly, a Albert Einstein was consistently making errors or mistakes. He turned out to be one of Earth’s greatest scientists.” He stood up from his chair and walked over towards the windows looking into the vast emptiness of space as celestial bodies zipped past them in warp. “It gives you an opportunity to learn from these mistakes or misfortunes. Embrace the process Cadet and it will take you far.” He turned back to where the cadet was sitting with his hands clasped behind his back. “One day you may be spilling a beverage over a blueprint of a starship, but the next you could be developing a new warp theory to power the next generation of vessels. Or, perhaps in your case, developing a whole new way to terraform planets for colonization never thought possible before. Everyone has to start somewhere Cadet, as long as your mistake doesn’t destroy the ship, I’m sure it will be fine.”

Lt. T’Kam (CSO)

Bowman was relieved – he had been operating under the impression that Vulcans expected perfection; and though Rhese always attempted precision, his body did not always seem willing to comply. “Thank you, sir. I am glad you seem so understanding,” Rhese said, before picking up the tea for a final sip.
