“Enter,” the jolly old station commander said as the door slid open. He was seated behind his desk looking over a PaDD and frowning but upon seeing Rhodes and Harkness that frown turned upside down into a pleasant enough smile. “Come in come in. Is there anything I can get you two? Coffee, Tea? Some coffee and coffee cake?”

Felix had already brunched, and his coffee consumption was already a concern in most medical circles, so he decided that for now he didn’t exactly need any more. He was about to reply, when..

He stood, and without waiting for an answer waddled his way to the replicator. “Three pieces of coffee cake, a carafe of French roast coffee and one of those little pots of sugar and a little thing of cream.” He paused and looks back to Rhodes and Harkness, “Do you want some to go? I can get a whole cake if you would like some to go.”

“No, thank you,” Felix replied, looking beside him to his XO. “That will do nicely. You wanted to see us? I assume we have a mission for the Challenger?”

Captain Rhodes, CO

Max chuckled slightly. “That is quite alright sir. However, I will take a cup of coffee while you explain what you have in mind for us.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

Jackson was somewhere between a gracious host and a worried mother, after bringing the serving tray to his desk he picked up a plate of the breakfast cake and coffee, handing them to Max and then another to Felix. “Take. Eat. You both look too thin,” he half ordered half implored. If Felix and Max refused the breakfast goodies a second time he would put them on a table between the guest chairs before returning to his desk and picking up his own cup of coffee and pouring in some milk and sugar.

Felix didn’t refuse, instead he graciously took the plate and held it before him, nodding his thanks but waiting for Jackson to continue.

“And yes, You have a mission. Rather there is a mission that will get you closer back to the Academy proper and is something you and the cadets can handle just nicely,” the rotund man said after tasting his coffee to make sure it was the correct level of sweetness for his tastes. “The USS Potterfield issued a distress beacon. She is an old Monolith class ship with full cargo lay out and something…” Jackson paused and looked up to Felix before pushing that particular PaDD to the side for now. “The transmission was weak and low powered, automated too. Hailing attempts by the Cerberus went unacknowledged which escalated the situation. The Saracen is technically the closest ship to the coordinates, and was going to be dispatched, but is otherwise occupied. At least that is what Admiral McCarthy told me ,” he went on to explain before eating some cake, fidgeting with his fork nervously.

“Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to conduct a search and rescue operation for the Potterfield, her crew, and her cargo. If search and rescue operations prove unsuccessful you are instructed to commence, uh,” the man swallowed hard before stuffing more cake into his mouth. Clearly he got so large by being both tall in stature and a nervous eater. “Well, you know, salvage and retrieval,” Jackson said wrinkling his nose at the thought.

OOC: For those who are curious, the Monolith-class is an actual approved class for use within STF. The Specs can be found here: https://www.star-fleet.com/library/bookshelf/tm/monolith.html

“I know the Captain of the Saracen,” Felix said to the room, “Knight was my Executive Officer on the Broadsword and became it’s Captain after I moved to Starfleet Command. If they are otherwise occupied and can’t take the distress call, it has to be important.” He had no knowledge of the Temporal incident the Saracen had just endured, nor the Saracen’s refit as her engines had been burned out.

“If the Potterfield was sending out low powered transmissions, her main reactor must be out and running on backups.” Felix surmised, “Where is she located, and what was she carrying? Any suspicion of foul play?”

Captain Rhodes, CO

Jackson gave a deferential nod to Felix at his addition and then looked at the PaDD. “Some of the specifics are above my station, and most don’t make sense to me but It appears the Potterfield was between a medical research facility and another science station. Something about biodiversity,” he said as he slid the PaDD to Rhodes and gestured with his meaty hands. “She was retrofitted a few years ago for biological transports. Stasis Pods, samples, things like that. Nothing terribly informative I don’t think.”

Picking up the PaDD, he looked over the details and flicked through the many listings it contained.

The PaDD listed the manifest of the Potterfield and all of her various containers. There were thousand of record rows, most of them mundane, but lots of them were flowers, trees, spore samples, flora, fauna, rocks, minerals, testing equipment, hydroponics, and the like.

“Captain,” Max said setting down his cup of coffee, “ships don’t get attacked for carrying flower samples. Not to mention, those sorts of details wouldn’t be above our pay grade.” Max had a bad feeling about this. “How long has it been since the Potterfield started transmitting their distress beacon sir?”

Cmdr Harkness - XO

Finishing his cursory reading of the manifest he handed it to Harkness to look over, then smirked slightly before he resumed his ‘business face’. “I’m not so sure, Max. The Valentinian species seems to have a militaristic outlook to flower cultivation, especially around this time of year although they are a little far away to worry about here.” He scratched at his chin, then absently broke off a little cake and was about to eat it before he paused and continued speaking.

“We cannot discount an attack, but it does seem unlikely. The Challenger will be able to depart within the hour, we have little need of further supplies for our trip back to Earth in any case.”

Captain Rhodes, CO
