Cadet Skene made his way to the next stop on his boarding checklist, to the counselor’s office for the obligatory psych evaluation. He would certainly be glad once all of the formalities had been taken care of and he could get to work. Of course, he understood the importance of the formalities. Starfleet wanted to be sure that each officer placed on board a ship was in the right place at the right time, both for the good and safety of the Fleet but also the safety and well-being of the individual officer. Rian wondered where this particular counselor’s line of questioning would take him. He didn’t particularly feel like he had any skeletons in his closet that would prevent him from doing a good job, but certainly the pressures of space could bring forward unexpected psychological symptoms.

Arriving at the counselor’s office he paused for a moment and then reached out to thumb the door chime. He then waited for permission to enter.

A very oddly accented voice came from the other side of the door and said “Do come in, please.” As the door slid open, it revealed a space unlike any other on the ship.

The office was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship, with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

Seated at the desk was a plain looking human male with brown hair and brown eyes. He average looking; the kind of person that would be lost in a crowd of more than four or five people. He wore the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Sections, and Lieutenant Commander pips showed on his collar. There was one distinguishing feature about the man, however. Actual glasses were perched on his nose. He looked up, and the strange accent issued forth again. “Hello, Cadet. May I help you?”

Rian stepped inside the office, glancing around at the interesting surroundings. Compared to the starkness of the rest of the ship, this office gave Rian a feeling of comfort. He supposed that was probably a good goal to have for a counselor’s office. It was odd to see actual black and white photographs. He of course knew that many centuries ago photographic technology did not allow for printing of color, but he had never actually seen one of these in real life.

The cadet suddenly realized he had become distracted by the sights in the office and brought his attention back to the officer sitting in front of him.

“Hello, sir. I am Cadet Rian Skene and I am here for my boarding evaluation.”
