Felix stood by the window in his Ready Room. He hadn’t been Captain of the Challenger long enough to even take her out for a run yet, or on their first mission but he had evaluations to do and assignments to make. It was only 4pm on ship time, and most of the crew were preparing to end A Shift for the day. He spent a few moments looking out over the Science station while his empty coffee cup sat on the desk by his console, then moved back to the desk and keyed the comm line open.

=/\= Captain Rhodes to Cadets Woolley and Starr, I would like to see you in my ready room if you please. =/\=

Short and sweet, he keyed the comm line closed and waited. Obiah and Nijix had already been informed of the meeting, and were expected in moments also.

Nijix moved down the corridor toward the CO’s ready room. She wasted no energy as she chose the quickest routes and arrived before the Cadets, briskly entering into the room. Since she was expected, there wasn’t a reason to request entrance. She briefly locked eyes with her superior then slipped into her assigned position. Her attention shifted to the door while they waited for the others to arrive.

Simon was surprised when he heard the voice of the captain over the comms. He wondered what the captain wanted and replied to the invitation.

=/\= I’ll be right there, sir =/\=

Starr quickly straightened his uniform and headed to the captain’s ready room. He approached the door and took a breath outside. He still wondered what he had done to get a call from the captain. It was either good, or he had done something terribly wrong. He was going through everything he had remembered doing to make sure he hadn’t done anything for the latter reason and then pressed the chime on the door.

Max had only recently concluded his sickbay shift. Sitting in his quarters he was carefully finishing off an oil painting, taking great care not to get paint on his uniform or the table upon which he was working. As the CO’s voice interrupted the still silence of his almost meditative task, Max winced as the brush moved slightly off course, dragging a thin line of paint from the blooming petal of the flower he had created to a space he had not intended.

“Damn,” he muttered under his breath as he set brush and palette down. Standing, he did a quick check of his uniform, now regretting that he had chosen to paint while wearing it. Pleased to see that he was still in proper order he then, having only allowed a minute or so to pass from the time the call came to the time of his response, tapped his comm badge after clearing his throat.

=/\= On my way, sir =/\= he said simply while exiting his quarters. Him and Starr? How odd. Hopefully there wasn’t an incident that required both security and medical. An ancient medical saying, that when you hear hooves you should think horses rather than zebras, came to mind as he walked swiftly toward the ready room. Upon arrival he gave his tunic one final adjustment before pressing the chime to indicate his arrival.

The door slid open to admit both of the Cadets, the two of them would see that Felix was leaning on his Ready Room desk with the Chief of Security nearby. “Come in, both of you please.” Felix asked, his English accent clear in the quiet of the Ready Room. “Stand, if you will. Don’t sit. This is a serious matter and I intend to have it done shortly.”

The Captain certainly didn’t look displeased at all, but his voice was flat and matter of fact. He glanced down at a PaDD that lay beside him on the desk, and reached out and flipped it face down, then looked up at Lieutenant Tavium briefly before looking back to the Cadets. They wouldn’t have been able to see the brief grin he gave Nijix from the corner of his mouth that faced away from them.

Max entered the ready room, at first unsure of what to do. Upon being told to stand he found that command incredibly easy to follow as his spine immediately stiffened. “Aye, Captain” he acknowledged as he stood in place, squaring his shoulders and placing his hands behind his back at parade rest. Whatever was coming, he fully intended to take it head on.

As he stood there, Max considered the possibilities. He had been attending to his duties since his arrival. Did he forget something? Did this have something to do with the ship’s counselor? That guy felt like he was profiling a criminal in almost every interaction Max had with him. Maybe his roommate had complained about the incessant oil painting?

No matter. It was, after all, a training ship. If Max had misstepped, hopefully it would result in a training opportunity.
