Catt was hurting. There was no denying that tail injuries were painful. Embarrassing, definitely embarrassing. She stepped into the fresher and set the Sonics to the highest setting. This required her to put in earplugs. Most species couldn’t hear the subsonic bleed of the sonic shower. Another Caitan blessing her inner monologue snarked at her.
It took no time at all to clean off the mud. The Sonics gave her a mild headache as usual. Normally she would of used the lowest setting and taken more time. At this setting it also removed the dead fur that she shed. Was a risk hearing loss worth it to avoid shedding. It did embarrass her but probably not worth it.

She stepped out of the fresher and started to brush herself. The fresher always made her fur puff out. She had tried leaving it fluffy once at the academy. A Tellerite had tried to touch her fur. Then gotten abusive when she had objected. But that was normal for most Tellerites. That pretty much everyone had been at least tempted to touch her fur had made the experiment short lived. She dressed herself. The 23rd century uniform made her stick out from the rest of the crew but the skin tight one piece currently in fashion was impossible to wear if you had fur. Her inner voice again commented on Caitan vanity. Ok she sighed. She was vain. She took pleasure and pride in being insufferably pretty as her room mate at the academy had told her nearly every day for four years. Her vanity had kept her fussing with her appearance far to long already. The Sonics had been like torture when they had touched her tail. She had made it into a exercise of the mental techniques she used to try and control her body’s reactions to emotions and pain. She felt that she was a dismal failure at hiding such things. But the Vulcan who had taught her had admitted to never having heard of any Caitan showing a interest before. It had been a requirement to take a social elective. She had chosen the meditation because it was exactly the type of thing no Caitan would choose.

After a brief last check she set off for her destination. Corridors, turbolift, more corridors. Passing crew and officers. All strangely quiet. Ships noises muted. It felt strange. Like the ship had forgotten her or she wasn’t quite connected to reality. She was starting to feel very strange between the quiet and the throbbing pain at the base of her tail. It was a relief when the door to sickbay slid open and she stepped inside.

“Hello? Can I get some help?” She said louder than she realised.

Cadet Catt Bennet. Sciences.

Obiah heard the Cadet’s call, their head shooting up from were they had been hunched over supplies. Climbing to their feet, they quickly brushed off their uniform, heading from the inventory and directly into the Sickbay. In a hurry, their knowledge of the Cadet’s condition narrow, they retrieved a tricorder. Bustling over, Torrirs caught up with Bennet, resting a hand behind her back to offer support to her body. “What’s going on, Cadet?” Despite their concern, the doctor was cool and calculated, gesturing the young woman over to a biobed.

“Come, let’s get you settled on a bed.” They encouraged, attempting to guide her over to the nearest empty bed. “Can you tell me when your symptoms started? Or what you were doing?” They didn’t have the ability to scan Bennet while leading her across the floor, so they would have to rely on word of mouth until they were given the chance to analyze the situation.

Catt sighed leaned a bit on the doctor. She tilted her head to hear better. The muted words disturbed her. The lack of the usual noises were causing her disorientation and her damaged tail left her both unsteady and embarrassed. Her voice when she replied was louder that her usual tone to everyone but her, and there was a touch of panic and hysteria that crept in. ” I was mixing nutrint solution. I got stuck in the slurry. I pulled myself free but fell. I… May of broken my tail. I think I managed to cause myself a endothermic reaction as I am feeling weak. I forgot how cold nutrient slurry saps your strength. I may of compounded my injuries cleaning off the mud in the sonic fresher. The tail is throbing. I.. I am unbalanced and having trouble hearing.” She flicked her ears back sharply in a fear responce. The movement displaced one of the earplugs she had put in when she entered the freasher. She flicked the ear forward in responce to the feeling of something moving in her ear. The ear plug fell out. Bounced off her shoulder and for Catt time seemed to slow as she watched it falling. As it landed on the floor she let out a rather unlady like stream of words in Caitan. She moved to remove the other earplug from her other ear and pretty much snarled, “I am a total idiot.”, her inner ears blushing deeply in embarrassment. She crawled onto the biobed on her stomach to avoid putting weight on her tail, and buried her face in her arms in what was a somewhat childish attempt to hide her embarrassed reaction.

Raising their eyebrows, Torrirs watched as the earplug fell from her ear with a string of foul words. “It’s all right, Cadet; we all make mistakes.” Obiah assured her, making certain their tricorder was calibrated for Caitian readings. “I’m going to run a few scans. I’ll need you to stay as still as possible,” They rose their voice, uncertain if they could be heard with Catt’s body facing away and her head in the nook of her arms. Shaking their head, they rose the device, slowly drawing it over her body to retrieve a full graphic of what was going on in her system. Once the scan was complete, they transferred the information to a PaDD, so they could show Catt the results. Maneuvering around the biobed, they paused by Catt’s shoulders. “All done. It looks like you’ve done some damage to your tail, but we can treat that with an osteo-stimulator, which will encourage the bone cells to repair its layers.” They explained, pausing for a second. “As for your hearing, the removal of the earplug should help. Has it improved since?”
