After the appropriate amount of time passed, the Challenger dropped out of warp and started at impulse towards the coordinates supplied earlier. It was quiet out. Nothing on comms other than the faint distress call, and scanners found nothing but the ship, running on standby power, adrift in space.

GM Wombat

Cadet Osten had relinquished the security console several minutes before the Challenger dropped out of warp, allowing the regular bridge crew to take over from the second shift personnel like Wiles who had monitored the ship during its time in high warp. However, Wiles positioned himself to stand beside the turbolift instead of leaving the bridge, clasping his hands behind his back and standing at attention as the ship dropped back to impulse. Unless asked to leave, Wiles allowed his security uniform to act as permission to stand guard, ready to jump in should the distress call prove dangerous to the Challenger’s crew.

“Put the Potterfield on screen.” Felix said as the came to a halt.

Wiles’ attention was focused intently on the viewscreen as they approached the adrift ship, but his wary eyes scanned the edges of the screen’s field of vision, not staring at the ship in the center of the screen as he was sure most other officers were doing. He furrowed his brow slightly and narrowed his eyes, inspecting the background against which the distressed ship floated.

T’Kam looked over the readings that came through while standing next to the cadet in his charge. “Curious..” he whispered. “Cadet Bennett, can you scan the ship for any bio signs? We should be able to get some readings on the ships core as well, check to see if the warp core is functional or if it’s been ejected.” This indeed was a curious situation. it wasn’t often they stumbled into a lone ship emitting a distress signal. Hopefully the crew, if present would be able to fill in the gaps on what happened.

Lt. T’Kam (CSO)

Catt ran a scan of the ship in distresses energy signature. Warp drive status, impulse systems, reacter output. Weapon readiness state, life suport status and for biosigns. The report she had seen on the ships cargo manifest had lead her to believe it was either a colony ship or a freighter resupplying a colony. So she made a poi t of looking for flora and fauna. A colony ship often carried pets, livestock and tools that would not be on a cargo manifest. Starfleet regulations often complicated the colinisation process. Colonists were building a new home, they always tried to bring the comforts of their old homes with them. So as a final last touch she looked for any signs of secret or shielded cargo areas. Star Fleet had it’s rules. Colonists had ways to avoid those rules. And if it was a resupply freighter. r time on a Orion ship had left her suspicious of so called honest traders and merchants in general.
((Ooc) leaving space for the GM to insert results.),

After about 5 minutes between each question, the computer’s lovely, if detached, voice gave the following replies:

“Scanning warp core status.”,

“Warp core in standby mode, but operational.”

“Scanning, Reactors and power systems.”

“Reactors, off line, power systems off line”

“Scanning for life support status.”

“Life support off line in 90% of the ship. Life support still operational on deck three”

“Scanning for life signs. Flora, fauna and sentient.”

This spewed a literal tens of thousands of lines of report. “21, 927 different life forms identified on the Potterfield. Shall I read each one?”

“Lets not do that.” The CO said in response, wondering at the number of life forms present while 90% of the life support was off line.

Catt flicked an ea of course her search had been a bit ambitious. “Computer narrow search to sentient life forms. In the area with life support.”,
Then she flicked a ear and smiled, “Computer create a file of all scanned lifesigns on the Potterfield. Sort by type, Flora and Fauna, and sentient. Do this quietly and inform me when it is complete.” Catt was curious and such a listing could provide data of use if she studied it later. “Also Computer when that file is complete compare to the manifest of the Potterfield. Flagging and items not listed on the cargo or crew manifest. Advise me when completed.” The computer had the capacity to run several million such minor tasks after all. If it turned out to be a waste of time it wasn’t going to effect ships operations.

“Scanning cargo spaces, comparing ship cargo against listed manifest.”

There were crates. Lots of crates. With fifteen cargo bays there wasn’t much room on this ship for much of anything else. Again, another list flashed up on the screen and just kept scrolling. “145,907 tagged cargo crates in cargo areas. Shall I list each one?”

“Scanning for shielded storage areas. Hidden cargo spaces and other systems atypical of specifications for ships of the ship in distresses class.”,

Considering this is a standard Star Fleet cargo ship, not owned and operated by a group of schmucks, there results didn’t yield anything interesting there. Crates littered the ship in all the cargo spaces. There was bio mass in all of the cargo spaces and life support on Deck 3, where the Sick Bay and Life Support systems were housed.”

Catt hadn’t really expected much in the way of covert spaces. But she had paid attention during her security and operations classes. It was to be assumed a away team would be sent and she didn’t want them to run into any avoidable surprises. Her brief tour in engineering had left her with the impression that merchant ships even those in Starfleet tended to modify their systems to better specialize for the job. That the Potterfield was a straight out of the shipyard configuration was surprising.

“Computer how long has the Potterfield been in service?”

Of course scanning for each of her list would take some time so she kept to her scanner stating what she was doing suto voice so only Lt. T’Kam could hear her. She didn’t want to interfere with normal bridge operations and by announcing what she was doing to him she allowed her superior to correct anything she might be missing.

Her initial scans complete she got to scanning for what she ought to have scanned for first. Which is the crew of the Potterfield. She scanned deck three first then made a wider scan in case anyone was in a environmental suit or trapped in a compartment somewhere.

Cadet Catt Bennet. Sciences.

Cadet Osten was gleaning information from conversations across the bridge from his position lurking near the turbolifts when he overheard the computer mention to Cadet Bennet that deck three of the Potterfield still had life support. He perked up and allowed himself a second of hesitation before stepping forward to the science station that T’Kam and Bennet were working at. He positioned himself behind Bennet’s shoulder and waited for the computer to pause in its reporting before speaking.

“Apologies for the interruption Lieutenant T’Kam, I’m Wiles Osten, security cadet. If life support is still active on deck three, and if that’s where the crew is located, that will assist us in the case of evacuation, as Monolith-class cargo ships have both of their transporter rooms located on deck three. If we can restore power to the transporters on-site, we could evacuate the crew quickly without needing to traverse the ship.” Wiles paused. “Should it be necessary,” he clarified. Wiles spoke evenly, just loud enough to cut over the other noise of the bridge. He watched from over Catt’s shoulder as she conducted her scan for the crew of the Potterfield with anticipation.

Listening to the reports come through, Felix nodded at the Cadets suggestion, it was a fair call. “Well, now that we have probed them a little, lets call and see if anybody is listening shall we?” He came to his feet and adjusted his tunic. “Open a channel,” he said to the Tactical station (Security).

=/\= Potterfield, this is Captain Rhodes of the U.S.S. Challenger. We are responding to your distress call, what is your status? =/\= He looked back to his XO then at the ship on the screen and waited for a response.
