The pattern worked and the away team materialized in front of the thick, grey, sickbay doors. The hallways were dark and muggy; a clear sign the power had been off to this area for some time, or had at least been altered to be a more jungle type environment.

Catt began scanning the moment she finished materialization. She took a step so that she had her back to a wall, while her ears swiviled back and forth for any sounds that might warn of a potential danger. The transporter euphoria was as usual distracting to some extent but she refuse to allow it to cause her any distraction. She was well aware that most people hesitated after transport to reorient themselves. But by focusing her attention on her tricorder she had found she could mostly negate that pause. As usual the euphoria disapated with a sudden annoyance. The Transporter always left her with a static charge which disipated as soon as her tail touched the wall. Nothing like getting zapped by static electricity to shake off a mood buzz. She sighed and adjusted the tricorder to scan for potential harmful gasses in the funky jungle like air.

“Not sure if the air is so fragrent because cargo was exposed or if life support has been marginal for a extended period. But I suspect someone may of tampered with the settings of life support as in theory a air pocket running on minimal life support ought to be cold and dry, with a increased nitrogen level.”

Max nodded as he turned on his beacon and let the light shine up and down the hallway. “Alright Cadet, work with Cadet Locke to determine what has happened to the environmental controls here. Lt, get your team spread out here, standard perimeter, but keep line of sight for now. I don’t want any wandering to far away just in case something happens.”

Max looked around the corridor and then over at Richards. “Where are the life signs. And please tell me that we haven’t just suddenly decreased our life expectancy.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

Lillian felt the transporter process concluded and the deck under her feet and she recovered quickly have been throw countless transport in her life on starships with her parents. she dropped into a defensive position kneeling on one knee with the other one pop-up and life)defensive position kneeling on one knee with the other one pop-up and rifle at the ready.
that was probably a bit over the top but it was an unknown ship and situation she thought after she had done it
The XO issued orders to the team Lillian stood and assumed stranded defensive position as instructed.
“clear”
she said as she looked down the darkened corridor

Cadet Osten pitched forward as he rematerialized aboard the Potterfield, momentarily off-balance as one foot came down hard in front of him. He had transported before, but not under such stressful circumstances. He did have a moment of light-headedness, but he straightened quickly as his eyes flickered to the other personnel, hoping they had not witnessed his gaffe. “I’m alright,” he breathed, reassuring himself and potentially those in his immediate vicinity.

Wiles glanced at Cadet Anderson as she dropped into a well-practiced crouch, and a flash of insecurity crossed his mind. But he swung his rifle up to aim down the sights toward the opposite end of the hallway from where Cadet Anderson was facing. “Clear,” he echoed his counterpart.

Cadet Osten looked at Lieutenant Tavium out of the corner of his eye, awaiting further orders. Then he refocused his gaze down his end of the murky corridor.

Catt took her eyes off her tricorder just long enough to watch the security cadets go through their paces. She wasn’t going to comment on how phaser rifles were likely not the best option on a freighter which unlike a Starship would be designed to use as little space as possible. After all the XO had ordered them to bring the rifles and in ber thinking the XO was the right hand of god. She nodded to the XO and went back to scanning.

“The air definately is not typical of what is expected on a ship that is running minimal systems on batteries. High humidity and a jungle funk could be in theory that the ships botanical bay was damaged. I am scanning the air quality to be sure but limited exposure should have no long term medical issues. My viewing of the listed cargo manifest did not indicate any harmful flora. “, she said as she scanned. She said it more to reassure the other cadets than as any firm opinion she had. It was after all the other cadets first away mission. Well hers as well. But then she had some experiance with living in a ruined environment with less than perfect air. She wondered if the XO’s comment had been more of the teasing that the transporter chief had been engaging in before transport.

Scanning for air quality, looking particularly for potential harmful gasses or bacteria or viral elements.

Scanning for the Potterfields remaining crews lifesigns.

“Good to know Cadet Bennet.” Pulling out his own tricorder he started looking for the lifesigns that they had detected.

“Okay Cadet, this area is secure, you don’t have to keep kneeling. Check some of the surrounding areas, but don’t stray to far.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

Nijix nodded in agreement over the XO’s orders. She silently signaled all her officers to spread out and do a perimeter check, indicating they needed to be watchful. The CoS had her own thoughts over the situation but kept them to herself. Theories were pointless without evidence and she didn’t need to upset the Cadets before they needed to be.

Her eyes scanned the environment for more than moving bodies, her weapon drawn and switched to stun. She didn’t want to kill anyone unless they threatened her crew. As each security officer checked in with a clear from their assigned section, Nijix’s eyes traced the hallway walls, roof, and floor for any indications of someone’s presence. Even a footstep would help provide a clue to what happened here.

“I agree. I don’t like the feel of this and make sure your weapons are set onto stun. We don’t want to accidentally hurt someone we’re supposed to save,” she reminded her Cadets in a quiet voice after the XO spoke.

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

Lillian was still in the crouch when the XO advised her she didn’t need to keep crouching she stood up slowly surveying the area. Lillian took in what the sciences cadet was say about the air and the ship.
Lillian glanced at the setting on the top of the rifle and ensured that it was on have stun that would no hurt anyone if they where hit By mistake but make sure no one would get up if they where the enemy, well not fast anyway.
“any sign of those life signs, Sir ? “ she asked as she took up a standard protection formation on the edges of the away team.
Lillian was worried about the other security cadet he look unsteady on his feet when they first beamed in and mumbled some thing to him self. Lillian just hoped that his 4 years at the academy had done more that it looked like at the moment because she wasn’t to sure she would put her life in his hands right now.

Cadet Osten took a couple cautious steps forward at the direction of the XO and COS, cocking his rifle to the side as he did so to inspect the stun setting. He knew it was set to stun. But he just wanted to make sure.

Wait, what was it set to? He had been caught up in his head too much, it had not even registered. Wiles breathed out slowly through his nose. He checked a second time, making sure to focus. It was set to stun. As expected. Good.

Wiles took slow, deliberate steps down the hallway, approaching the “T” in the corridor in front of him. He kept the rifle raised and ready, eyes intently focused down the sights. The light dimmed as he neared the intersection, and the sounds of the away team behind him faded into a background murmur as the thud of his boots against the deck seemed to thunder louder with each step.

Cadet Osten pressed his back to the side of the hallway just before the “T” of the intersecting corridor. The thudding continued. Maybe it was his heart, not his shoes. Wiles took in a breath, not as deep as he indented, and let it out steadily, eyes staring at the opposite wall. Then he twirled off of the wall, into the intersection, rifle whipping from one end of the bisecting passage to the other as he pivoted quickly, scanning both directions for threats or clues.

The life signs were all around them. The tricorders thought there was life teeming in this part of the ship, in the walls, up the corridors, everywhere. Narrowing the scope some, however, the humanoid life forms were located behind the bulkhead directly next to where the old transporter chief placed them. It, however, was locked and it looked like the manual override on this side had been severely damaged.

Up the hallway to the next junction, which is where Osten wandered off to, it got darker and muggier. Around the corner there was no light up the just what ever illumination was cast from his flashlight.

Most importantly, however, it was silent. A pin drop could be heard. The white noise of a running starship was just… gone.

GM Wombat

Catt pointed at the closed door. “Humanoid life is behind that door sir. “, she said the whir of her tricorder provided some releaf from the dead quiet that was rather unnerving. The door between them and the Potterfields crew had that barred from the inside look to it. But she wasn’t sure she should report her observation. But even with the risk of looking like someone who watched to many horror holoprograms she said, “That door with it’s exposed but damaged manual open controls. Well it reminds me of bad horror holoprograms my room mate at the academy was addicted to sirs.” She looked between the XO and the COS as she said this. “Also if this was a holoprogram we are on the wrong side of that door.” She added her ears flattening and tail twitching as she looked up and down the corridor. When her attention returned to her tricorder as her inner ears blushed in embarrassment she started scanning for movement. “I suppose as the virgin innocent female I am somewhat safe if this was a horror entertainment.”, she whispered out loud to herself. It was a strange comfort somehow till she realised she said it out loud.but as there were no holes she could hide in she just stood and looked embarrassed while scanning and not meeting either superior officers eyes.

To GM: scanning for movement other than the landing party.
