Once complete with medical he found himself a little bit exhausted, but knew that everything needed to be complete before he could meditate, rest, and begin his shift the next day. Getting a bit lost taking a wrong turn down one of the hallways, he eventually found himself in front of the Counselor’s office. Counselors had always been somewhat of a dread, though less so with other races. Vulcans were always looking for any slip up or sense of emotion which he always kept in check, though he had always wondered why such ways existed for such a long time. It wasn’t really his place to question such things that had been going on for centuries, but even so he disliked counselors. He was looking forward to marking this task off his list as he pressed the chime near the counselors door.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

A voice came from the other side of the door, “Please enter.” it said and the doors slid open to reveal an office unlike most aboard the Challenger. Whereas many looked quite similar and more sterile, this office was warm and inviting… almost like a mediation chamber.

It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship, with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

Seated at the desk was a plain looking human male with brown hair and brown eyes. He average looking; the kind of person that would be lost in a crowd of more than four or five people. He wore the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Sections, and Lieutenant Commander pips showed on his collar. There was one distinguishing feature about the man, however. Actual glasses were perched on his nose; and as T’Kam entered the man looked up and said “How may I be of service, Lieutenant?” he asked. The voice had a very noticeable, odd accent that was hard to place.

Korczak, CNS

The aura and personality of the room almost caught T’Kam off guard as he didn’t quite expect any rooms on a Starfleet vessel to look this .. customized. Granted he had only been on one other smaller vessel so far during his time with Starfleet and seeing this kind of sight almost reminded him of the rooms for religious service or meditation aboard Vulcan vessels. He made a quick determination to address the individual by their rank as opposed to counselor solely for the fact that the gentleman in from of him outranked him. “Good afternoon Commander. I hope I am not intruding.” He placed his hands behind his back and clasped them, still standing just inside of the doorway. “I have just recently arrived to the Challenger and am required to present myself for a mental examination to determine if I am ‘fit as a fiddle?’” He paused and glanced off to the left. “No that is the wrong analogy, my apologies.” He shook his head and returned his eyes back to the Commander. “I am still learning some of these phrases. They seem to be somewhat complicated in their use.”

Lieutenant T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

The man smiled slightly and said “Federation Basic is a strange amalgamation of various languages, Lieutenant. It is only logical that some of the base Mother languages work in some of their own eccentricities. Please come in and have a seat, if you would like. I am Lieutenant Commander Janus Korczak, Ship’s Counselor. You may refer to me by rank, profession, or ‘Doctor’… whichever seems most fitting from your perspective.”

The man’s speech was fascinating, at least from a vocal intonation and linguistic perspective. It was clear from his accent that Standard was not his native tongue, but his accent had odd qualities to it; like multiple accents vying for supremacy. Additionally, his word choice was very formal. Whether or not that was his normal speech, or he was adept at speaking in ways particular to various races like Vulcans, was yet to be seen.

Korczak, CNS

“You are very correct and I will accept your offer, thank you.” He inclined his head and made his way to one of the seats and sat down, keeping his back straight. His ears could definitely pick up the intricacies of his speech pattern, but he couldn’t quite place it to any federation standard accent he had heard to date. Very fascinating.. he thought. “I believe Commander would be sufficient. However, if you value your education above that of your career.. I would have no objection in addressing you as Counselor. He rested his elbows lightly on the edge of the seat to allow his palms to rest comfortably on his thighs.

He took a moment to look around the room again and take in the greater details of the photographs, lighting, and books. “Your room is much more different than those that I’ve seen before on a Starfleet vessel. What made you change it so much?” He was definitely curious about what made this room so much more different than the usual bleak Starfleet grey rooms.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Korczak smiled slightly. “The room is intended to promote a sense of peace and relaxation, Lieutenant. It helps with what goes on here that individuals feel at ease.” and he pulled up T’Kam’s record on his desk interface. “Would you care for something to drink before we begin, Lieutenant?” he asked as he began reviewing the file.

Korczak, CNS

“If you have the Vulcan Spiced Tea available for replication, I would not mind one, thank you Commander.” He tilted his head as to say something more, but kept silent as if dismissing it from his mind. “The room does have some significant aesthetic qualities to promote a sense of relaxation. The softer light being foremost quality I believe.” He patiently waited, sitting as he was with his palms on his thighs.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Korczak ordered the drink and a blackberry currant tea for himself. Setting the teas on the table, he took a seat opposite T’Kam and retrieved a PaDD from behind him on the desk. “I hope the tea is to your liking.” he said with a soft smile. “So, Lieutenant. What are your thoughts about your new assignment?” he asked plainly.

Korczak, CNS

“Thank you for the tea Commander.” He gently picked up his cup to take a small sip before setting it down in front of him. “Thoughts?” He let the question sink in, wondering how he would answer such a question. He wasn’t quite sure how to answer that, though perhaps the simplest of answers were the hardest to think of sometimes. “I had joined the Officer Exchange program mostly out of curiosity; To study and learn. Though that is not the case once in the program. As it currently stands I plan to help the mission of this vessel in whatever way necessary, primarily to educate, guide, and help the many cadets that are aboard this vessel achieve an enlightenment so that they may be fruitful as officers within Starfleet.” He didn’t really think of an answer, but just spoke his mind in that. He believed the term was .. impromptu? Yes, that was it. An impromptu answer and a truthful one. He decided that he should make a mental note to practice these kinds of answers more when he had the time.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Korczak remained passive both in body language and facial expression. “You say ‘enlightenment’. What do you mean by that, specifically?”

Korczak, CNS

He quirked an eyebrow wondering if he said anything odd, “I suppose I would mean to open their minds to different possibilities or to expand their knowledge with the scientific process. It is all about learning, Commander. To study, test, experiment, fail, learn, and repeat until they succeed.” He looked back over to the Counselor hoping that he accurately explained his question.

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

Korczak nodded and made a note on the PaDD. “Do you believe that your skills will be adequately utilized in this capacity? And how do you foresee yourself responding to a long-term ship assignment?” he asked after he had finished.

Korczak, CNS

Bump

OOC: Sorry work has been a non-stop nightmare lately lol .. I’m basically in a sink or swim kind of situation right now with the new job. Have about 2 weeks to learn the rest of the 25 company products when I’ve basically joined at the beginning of November to be able to give demos on. No pressure, right?

IC: To this question T’Kam thought for a moment. Would his skills be utilized properly? He knew that Federation ships and their human crews were definitely unpredictable at best so he wasn’t sure what to expect or how he would be utilized. “I believe that my skill set will be challenged on many fronts Commander. To that I know that it will be a constantly learning and adapting cycle. So in theory .. I do believe the skills I possess will be adequately and sometimes over-utilized when needed.” He tilted his head slightly as he continued, “As for your second question .. I am not so certain yet. I have not been around many humans to know how I would respond to a long-term assignment to this vessel. Perhaps we could reconvene after some time while I grow accustomed to the crew?”

Lt. T’Kam (Oncoming CSO)

OOC: Bump so I can respond.

James

Korczak nodded and said “If that would be deemed advisable by you, then I would agree to it’s efficacy.” and he looked at the CSO for a moment and then asked “Do you have any particular specialty within the Science Section?”

Korczak, CNS

“I strive to learn more in the fields of Astrophysics and Warp Theory, but as for a specialization ..I do not think it would be adequate to say that I have one at this moment in time Commander.” He wondered if his response would be good enough to what the counselor expected, but at the same time he didn’t want to give false information on capabilities that he did not have.
