“I’ve fixed a few things Cadet, but bypassing a door is not in my standard book of tricks. But that is why we brought Cadet Locke with us,” Max said looking around. “Where is the Cadet?”

OOC: Thanks, Dave! I am back and I am excited to see how you all have continued on. Prepare for a dump of information to fulfill all of your requests. If I miss something just respond with your IC question and I will get back to you.

IC: Starting at the top: Osten’s scratch was approximately five centimeters long and two deep at its lowest point. It was as if a claw had gotten back there and scraped from the center of his neck to the middle of his shoulder blade. Even though it was only a few minutes old at most it had already started to swell and turn a purple color. Tricorder readings showed no other immediate health changed, but Osten himself felt a little more sweaty than before.

The manual override was damaged from the outside, yes, but tricorder readings showed that it was something that detonated against it, like a small bomb or phaser blast. The bulkhead door itself was sealed shut with some sort of weld from the inside. Whoever was in there didn’t want anyone getting in or out.

The other group, Anderson and Tavium, are able to turn the corner at the junction, no problem. Their flashlights, assuming they have them, show the biomass lining the walls in both directions from the junction. It looks something akin to mold and moss, green fibrous material that sloughs off in the hand. Keen sense of hearing would hear footsteps at the far end of the hallway where the corridor made another corner.

GM Wombat

Richards frowned as he looked at the ‘scratch’ that Osten had received and he glanced at the man as the tricorder readings came in. “Are you sure you didn’t see anything?” He asked, whatever had made this couldn’t have simply been invisible in his mind. “It looks like you have some bruising, a little swelling,” he reached into his pouch for a hypo to treat swelling and bruising first. “How do you feel?”

=/\=Acknowledged, Commander=/\= Came the voice of Rhodes from the ship. =/\= Stay alert, and let us know if you need personnel or material support.=/\=

NE Richards

=^= Captain. Cadet Locke was supposed to have beamed over to us. He’s not here. Is he still on the Challenger? =^=

Wiles stopped himself from attempting to look over his own shoulder in an effort to see the scratch. “Is it bad?” He shrugged in exasperation as he dropped his rifle further to point towards the ground, looking back at Richards with one eye. He winced slightly as he rotated his neck to do so. “I didn’t see a thing, and I turned around immediately. I guess it could have been worse, right? At least it’s just a scratch. I’m sure I’m alright to continue with the mission.”

Cadet Osten reached up to unbutton his collar. He looked warily to Cadet Bennet. “Getting those air-scrubbers online sounds like a good idea. It’s getting hot in here.” Cadet Richards would most likely notice a damp spot forming in the middle of Wiles’ back, through his golden uniform.

As he observed the door in front of them more closely, Wiles’ stomach dropped. He knew a barricaded door when he saw one, and he did not particularly like the idea of penetrating whatever defenses the survivors had constructed. Especially if they were obviously not keen on the idea themselves.

(Wiles Osten, Security Cadet)

Nijix glanced about when they reached the spot where Osten turned at. Her eyes followed the walls, floor and finally the roof with her weapon ready to stun whatever attacked her Cadet. She lingered her light on the wall lined with something thick and green. When Nijix heard the footsteps, she turned back to Anderson with her fingers pressed to her lips. She listened for a moment to determine if they coming or going. After hearing the XO inquire about what they saw, she broke the silence.

“Sir, additional footsteps turned the corner ahead but no sign of anyone. I think it might’ve been who attacked Osten. We also found some green fibrous material lining the wall here too.”

She fought the urge to follow the sounds immediately and feed her curiosity.

Her eyes flickered toward the group, “Permission to take Anderson and investigate the source.”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

“Go. Check in every 5 minutes,” Max said as he looked over at the Lieutenant. He was starting to get a bad feeling.

“Cadet Bennet,” he said turning towards Catt. “Let’s take a look at that material on the wall. We are going to have to come back to the door, or find a way around. Someone definitely did not want anyone getting in. So let’s find out why they were wanting to keep anyone, or thing, from going through that door.”

Cmdr. Harkness - XO

Catt took a few deep breaths, “Yes sir. I may actually be useful sir I am a botonist sir. I have been thinking sir that the mystery here starts in the cargo bay. Either a badly sealed container or one damaged. Or maybe some creature that is native to the source material.” She said as she narrowed the field of her tricorder scan to directly ahead of her.
“Now if the material in the container was a lichen or a fungus then it would of released spores.”, she said as she sgarted to move towards where the two security stood at the corner of the corridor.
“UM Doctor you may want to check Mr. Osten’s wound to see if a egg or seed was implanted.” She called back over her shoulder to the Doctor. In a voise gaining confidence as she was working at something in her specialt

Cadet Osten’s skin crawled at Cadet Bennett’s hypothesis, and he gave a sour look down at the back of her head as she walked away. He was mostly annoyed that she had put such a horrible thought in his mind. Wiles did his best to brush it off and let the actual medical professional tell him what he needed to know about his wound, but he was now feeling a little more anxious for a concrete assurance that he was alright.

“Now these cargo haulers can let routine maintanance slide sir.” She said as her ears moved back and forth tryi g to hear any noise not made by the away team.
“So the air filters get dirty and often damp. I spent a month in a ship sim during my engineering rotation. It was only supposed to be a day but I was facinated by the resulting growth that occurred on those air filters. Wrote a paper on it. My Engineering instructor was annoyed. But it did spark a new inspection protocal for Starfleet cargo haulers. The Pe’Taq. Bennet protocal. I heard one cargo engineer call it. Not sure who Pe’Taq is but he’s welcome to first billing. I just want to help people.”, she said as she drew up zt the corner and stopped.
She looked at the COS and said. I am going to sczn thzt biomass sir. If I am right theres a vine hiding inside that has a stinger, claw or thorn. I will need to get closer though could you please cover me?”, she practically chirped that out happy to be dealing with plantlife. She reached for the envirion belt controls and flipped it to on. A golden fourcefield formed around her then went clear. But her furr reacted to the field by picking up a static charge and poofing out to touch the inner walls of the field. It wasn’t a strong forcefield but it would keep you alive in a vaccum and deflect some incoming objects.

OOC: Personal Environment Belt force field? While these were shown in TAS and there is some back and forth discussion about personal force fields in other later episodes and what they were used for/could do, we do not use them here. Startrek.com records the life support belt as having been phased out in 2271, more than a hundred years prior to this point, Memory Alpha that they were used in the 2260’s and 2270’s. Be careful when using technology that is not commonly supported, but here we leave it up to the GM. In the main fleet, this may have created a few emails to discuss the likelyhood you had an antique piece of equipment just pop out of thin air on you, so be aware of giving your character an item they weren’t carrying before that isn’t a part of the normal equipment just because of what happens in the story. Otherwise, it was a well written post with great character actions and deductions.

Wiles raised an eyebrow at Catt’s guess about something from inside the moss. He called down the hallway, “that wouldn’t quite explain the footsteps Lieutenant Tavim reported. Or the voice I heard.”

(Wiles Osten, Security Cadet)

“What I think happened is spores got into the filters. Plants started to grow. That plantlife matured and started releasing additional spores. It got into the reactors and anywere else that was moist.”, she said as she waited for the COS or XO to respond.

Cadet Catt Bennet. Sciences.

Lillian was simply Listened to the conversation sound her as she stayed on guard for the source of the foot steps or and one approaching. It was then that Lt. Tavium the chief of security advised the XO that he wanted to go and inveterate the foot steps. Her Heart jumped when her name was mentioned as the person that was to accompany Her on the search.
Lillian move a bit closer to the Lt to show she was ready to go when they had the go ahead from the XO which came in short order.
Lillian formed up on the CoS and hated to move off after the footsteps of the possible attack.
“would you like me on point Sir”

Cadet Lillian Anderson Security

To recap, Anderson and Tavium were getting ready to explore the rest of the ship while Harkness and Bennet figured out how to get into the sickbay. Meanwhile NE Richards tended to Osten’s wounds.

GM Wombat

The Captain’s voice once more came through the XO’s comm.

=/\=Commander, Locke was assigned to transport with your team. Logs show he should be with you. =/\=

Richards, looking over the tricorder information coming back from Richards, took the dermal regenerator from his kit and began to heal the edges of the wound that Osten had receieved. “I’m not sure about killer vegetables,” he muttered, “but this doesn’t look like a rose bush got grumpy.”

NE Richards
Ooc: I wasn’t aware it wasn’t supported so sorry about that. However it’s not just appearing as I refered to it when we were in the transporter room and again in a post once were on the ship as I drew my phaser as Cadet Osten came running at us. While it may not be in current use there is no reason it couldn’t be available in the replicator. I rather suspect the notation that it went out of service is because some fans dislike anything from TAS. My characters Species is from TAS and the club accepts TAS as canon. I didn’t think to dig furter and took not being told it wasn’t available when I first posted having it as it being acceptable. Mea Culpa. Well I can omit having it if that is what is in line with club policy. We are on a ship with only partial life support and some areas exposed to vaccuum etc. I would of worn a environmental suit. But as all prievious posts are suitless I won’t assume so going on. I admit I am more familiar with TOS and TAS era. But the club has no ships set in that era. It dawns on me that the replicator has patterns for both civilian and military item so as a antiquated tech it might be available as civilin tech. This is getting long will wait on GM ruling.

Roger.

OOC: To be honest, I will take most of the blame on this one as my eyes totally skimmed over that part in the previous posts, and to be honest this one as well. Its just not a piece of equipment that I write plots for or look for. That being said, I am going to agree with Dave and retconn out the belt just for accuracy’s sake. So, lets go with she never had it to begin with. No need to go back and edit past posts, since I never incorporated it into my responses.

IC: Richards closed Osten’s wound just fine. It continued to be red and tender to the touch, left over bruising, but nothing otherwise out of the ordinary.

GM Wombat

OOC: All right, it took me a while to realize, but I kept putting Tavium rather than Tavim. Later is the original name, but since Tavium is in the IC, I made the altercations to the character bio because it would be easier. Just goes to show, even an experienced Role player can make mistakes. I also thought that might make a few of our Cadets chuckle, adjust to the corrections, and feel better about making big mistakes.

-Janice B.

“Understood,” Nijix stated and waited until Bennet arrived.

At Anderson’s request to take point, Nijix nodded.

“Yes, Cadet. Can you handle that?”

When Bennet requested cover, Nijix was ready for it. Her eyes shifted to Osten and made the order.

“Osten, if you’ve been given the clear, will you cover Bennet? Anderson and myself are heading out to investigate the footsteps before they vanish.”

She turned to Anderson, “After you.”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

Catt waited for Mr. OSten to take position. Watching the biomass from the corner as she waited. Osten had a point the footsteps didn’t mesh with her theory. But nor did they disprove it. Plantlife though took many forms in the univere some of whom were ambiatory others were carniverous. There was even likely to be some that could speak or use telepathy. Infinate diversity after all. Anything was possible. That they might run into something like that here was unlikely. The idea that she was likely wrong sapped the joy out of her. Just another Catt being a moron moment her inner voice scolded her. Her tail went still and her ears seemed to droop.
“Someone used a phaser on the door controls. Thats likely whats making the footsteps a crewman trapped outside the sickbay”,, zhe said flatly.
She dropped her guard and just started scanning the biomass slowly creeping closer.

To GM scanning Scanning ever scaning information like nuggets panning?
