Fresh from her meeting with the skipper, Meredith headed for the next stop on her itinerary, the semi-dreaded meeting the the local head shrinker.

As she strode down the corridor towards the office, she reflected in her previous evaluations. They’d always proved constructive and helpful in the main, but she couldn’t help but grin at the thought of the opinion her ancestor, Captain William Monroe of his Brittanic Majesties Royal Navy, and his peers would likely have had of the practise.

She thumbed the door chime and waited.

Meredith Monroe - Chief Engineer

An oddly accented voice sounded out form inside and “Please come in.” and the door slid open and revealed a space unlike any other on the ship.

The office was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship; with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting and giving a less harsh, much warmer glow. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

Seated at the desk was a plain looking human male with brown hair and brown eyes. He average looking; the kind of person that would be lost in a crowd of more than four or five people. He wore the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Sections, and Lieutenant Commander pips showed on his collar. There was one distinguishing feature about the man, however. Actual glasses were perched on his nose. He looked up, and a very odd accent issued forth, as if multiple accents were vying for control. “Hello. How may I help you?”

Lt. Cmdr. Korczac, CNS

“Lieutenant Monroe, Chief Engineer, reporting for my boarding evaluation Sir.” Meredith replied, her gentle lilting accent betraying her Hebridean heritage.

She stood at attention, a tall, broad shouldered presence that seemed somehow taller than the 6 ft 2 listed in her medical file. Knowing her tendency to fidget, she kept her hands clasped together behind her back.

A nod was the only physical acknowledgement of her statement, but the oddly accented voice said “I see. Please, be seated. Would you care for something to drink?” and he indicated a seat in the seating area and made his way to the replicator.

Korczak, CNS

“Breakfast Tea, Hot, Milk, Two sugars, Pint mug, please and thank you Sir” Meredith carefully lowered herself into one of the chairs he had indicated.

She took the time while the he was busy at the replicator to take a good look around the room and try to place or identify some of the pictures she could see from her seat.

Lt Monroe - Chief Engineer

The pictures were of similar looking humans in various ages. But the locations seemed to be the same throughout. An old church. A room with the same heirlooms throughout the different generations. A field where the trees could be seen to have grown as the pictures became closer to current. A boat in the water, the name “Andromeda” prominent in all of them.

Korczak brought the tea and set it down in front of the Lieutenant. “Here you are, Lieutenant.” and he noted her looking at the pictures. “My family. Some of these pictures go back over two hundred years.” he said flatly, with little to no inflection in his oddly accented voice. “Do you have any keepsakes that travel with you?”

Korczak, CNS

Meredith’s thoughts immediately went to the large and much battered chest currently waiting to be unpacked in her new quarters. “Perhaps one or two....”

She reached in to her hip pocket and pulled out a heavily padded cloth bag, large enough to fill her hand. She untied the drawstrings and reached inside, removing what appeared to be an antique clockwork fob pocket watch, but built on a slightly larger scale, clearly too big to be worn comfortably.

“This the most valuable piece I carry, I tend to keep it either on my person or secured in my quarters. Do you know what it is?”

Lt Monroe - Chief Engineer

Peering through his glasses, Korczak looked intently at the object for several moments. “Antique watch. Too large to be a pocket watch, however.” he replied, his oddly accented voice giving a strange cadence to his words. “I would reckon it to be… what? Late 19th, early 20th century? I’m sorry, but my knowledge of old mechanical devices is somewhat… limited.”

Korczak, CNS
