Tandra grinned. “Well, I’m certain that I can do,” She said confidently, “I know we mostly do minor injuries and routine checks, and that’s okay too. Especially since every emergency means one of my shipmates is hurt.” She certainly was excited at the prospect of some kind of crazy crisis, but she tried not to be, because she also believed in what she said, that each emergency, each interesting crisis was also a hurting shipmate that might not make it.

“That is very true,” the CMO replied and in her mind she added, and family and friends who suffer with them in one way or another.

“Hm… Well, what would you expect us to be doing daily? What sort of tasks do we do when we’re not… well, doing anything?” She asked. She hoped the question was clear enough, she really wasn’t sure how else to phrase it. Then again, she supposed Tija would clarify if she needed to. Tandra couldn’t stand how when she was nervous, she tended to doubt everything. And, she said to herself, This does seem to be going fairly well so far. So what’s there to be worried about, anyway?

Tija leaned back in her chair and brushed her left hand over her left ear as if to put a strand of hair behind it despite the fact that her hair was neatly tied back in a bun. “I know, of course, that you underwent extensive training at the Academy, but since a Starship is different form a classroom or even the medical facilities at the Academy, I’d suggest that in the first couple of weeks you’ll mostly assist me or other members of staff a few times. Just to get a feel for how things vary here to what you are used to. I also want you to get familiar with the equipment and everything we have and what is most important to learn where everything is. And for me the best way to learn that has always been helping with the organisation of the storage cabinets.” Smiling slightly at Mika, she added, “And if you have any questions or something on your mind: speak to me. I’m not a Betazoid after all and thus can’t read people’s mind.”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

She found herself chuckling at Tija’s comment about mind reading. “Makes sense. And I’m, well,” She chuckled once more, “Very organized. The storage cabinets will be spotless once I’ve had a go or two at them.” It was true, pretty much everything of Tandra’s was perfectly categorized and organized.

“Of course I’ll ask if anything comes up. If I might say, I’m very glad to be here,” Tandra told her.

OOC: As you can see I cut out part of the the thread to keep it from getting to long (and thus getting more difficult to read on mobile devices). As a rule of thumb you’ll leave a post or two per character who is in the thread (and the corresponding “posted by…” lines). And you’ll type snip where you deleted the posts. Does my explanation make sense?

IC:
“Good,” Aizala replied with a nod and a smile. She was starting to feel a bit more comfortable in this situation and it probably started to show. Titling her head slightly to the left, she fell silent for a moment, pondering. Eventually she asked, “What are your expectations for your time on the Challenger? And what would have to happen or not happen to make this time a good experience and would have to happen or not happen to make this a horrible experience?” She was fully aware that those were a lot of questions and probably not exactly easy to answer, but she want her cadets not only to learn, but graduate with a good experience of what it meant to be Starfleet officer.

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

OOC: So I’ve noticed this whole thing is one big, editable type box. You just delete the old stuff, save for one or two ish by each, and replace it with ‘snip’? Okay, makes perfect sense! That actually answers another question of mine, about mobile compatibility. Knowing that the site is good on mobile, I’ll probably be hanging around A LOT. XD

IC:
“Well. Ah, that’s.. not the easiest to answer.” She was glad for the thoroughness. It made it feel like some kind of test, but also like Tija cared about the Cadets, putting Tandra’s earlier worry to rest. That and the fact that Tija also looked much more relaxed, helped to relax Tandra. “Let’s start with expectations. I expect to be challenged. I expect to work, a lot, and I expect quite the learning curve. As you said, this will be quite different from the Academy, and that I expected. Some thing that didn’t make sense to me at the Academy, will once I get some actual experience. I also expect to make a lot of friends. I know there’s a few other Cadets around, and besides that, everyone I’ve talked to seems super nice. It’s actually… better than even I thought it would be so far. Now, that said, I also expect hardships. Nobody ever said being on a ship was easy stuff.” Tandra felt she was rambling slightly, so she stopped for a moment, before moving on to the next question.

Aizala watched and listened silently, nodding here and there and giving Tandra all the time she needed to answer. After all as she had pointed out, those weren’t the easiest questions to answer.

She let the pause continue for another quick moment, allowing herself a second to think about the second half of Tija’s inquiry. “As for what would make this a good experience… Well, like I said..” She paused in between words, briefly, as if still deciding how precisely to phrase it. “I am expecting to learn a lot, after all, this is a ship that takes us Cadets. What would make this a great experience to me, is learning everything I can, so whatever my assignment may be after this, I can be the best ship member I can, and perhaps even move up myself, someday. I would want hands on experience with as many scenarios as I can get, so that I have more to build on later on. What I’d rather not happen, is, well, the opposite of that. A horrible experience to me, would be one where I clash with everyone on board, don’t learn anything and this assignment ends with me none the better than today, right now. Does that make sense?” She asked, chastising herself for another too-long ramble-y answer. “I hope I’m not talking your ear off too much” She added.

After Tandra had stopped talking, Aizala waited a moment or two before saying anything herself, using that time to think about how to reply. “It does and don’t worry, you aren’t. In fact, I’m glad you gave a thorough answer and to me those sound like fairly reasonable expectations,” she answered. “And it’s good to keep in mind - as you seem to do - that life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Being a Starfleet medical officer is a great job and can be very enriching. But some days will be tedious, especially on an Academy ship. And eventually you will lose patients; no matter how hard you try to prevent it.” Looking Tandra straight into the eyes, she continued, “I’m not saying this to discourage you. I want you to be prepared and to find ways beforehand that will help you cope with those situations. And while I’m here to be your teacher and not your friend, I want you to know that my door is always open.”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

“I understand,” said Tandra, though she shifted slightly uncomfortably at the mention of losing patients. She knew naivety was one of her downfalls, and she tended to think too well of everything. And that was why she made an effort to keep the bad stuff in mind, too, because she didn’t want to get blindsided when something bad did happen. “Do you have any tips? On how to cope, that is. I mean, I’m sure I’ll be okay, but a little preemptive advice never hurt anyone, right?” And again, finally, she responded to Tija’s final statement. “I understand. I’ll be here if I ever do need anything.” She hoped she wouldn’t - not that she didn’t like Tija, or didn’t think she would be helpful, but she didn’t want to seem like the type of Cadet to need something all the time. She’d rather prepare now, and handle it on her own later.

Aizala leaned slightly forward, her left elbow resting on her desk and her left index finger lightly touching her mouth. She was silent for a couple of moments, think about how to best answer that question. After all, she was aware that she wasn’t the best example of how to deal with traumatic experiences in a healthy way. But she knew what was generally considered to be helpful. Eventually she said, “Talking with somebody you trust helps a lot of people. As does finding an outlet for your emotions. For some it’s creative work, others practice martial arts or some other sport. At the end of the day it comes down to the question of what works best for you. And I’m afraid that nobody will be able to answer that question for you.” With a half smile she added, “I know that isn’t very helpful. But maybe that is something to talk about with the counsellor when you see him for your psychological evaluation.”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

She nodded. “Like I said, I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Thanks for answering!” She paused for just a moment, thinking. Even that little bit of information was helpful to Tandra. Last time something bad had happened, in her home life, she hadn’t handled it particularly… well. She did not want a repeat if anything was to happen here.

“Is there anything else we should talk about, or should I move on to my other two evals?” She asked, looking to Tija. She had… her psych eval and her medical check-in left, if she was right. Then she could start her duties. Once again, she found herself rather excited, even for the mundane, boring stuff she’d probably hate doing in about a week from now.
