If there was one thing Emily had learned from the Medical Academy, it was poise under pressure, the key to effective bedside manner. She was going to need as much as she could get. As a Cadet, she was barely qualified to put M.D. after her name and everything she did went through the Chief Medical Officer. Emily nervously pressed the door chime. Awaiting that first response was the most nerve racking moment.

OOC: Welcome aboard, Emily! That’s a great post, well done! On a different note, my character can be rather brisk and distant. It’s nothing personal, she just has some … issues ;)

IC:
Almost immediately after the chime rang, a voice from the other side of the door called, “Enter!”

As the doors swished open before her, Emily would be able to see a smallish office. Most of the wall opposite the door was taken up by windows. Against the left hand wall stood a comfortable looking couch with a oval-shaped glass coffee table in front of it and two matching overstuffed armchairs on each side. Slightly to the right of the stood a desk at angle, facing mostly towards the door. Behind the desk was small bookshelf filled with books and a few ornaments. In front of the desk stood two identical chairs, facing the desk. The only things on the desk were a personal computer and two neat stacks of PaDDs. Behind the desk sat a petite Bajoran woman. Her copper hair was tied back into a neat bun at the nape of her neck. Her face was covered in a number of pale brown, almost golden looking freckles and a gentle smile played across her lips and around her jade coloured eyes.

Rising to her feet, Tija Aizala gestured towards the chairs and said, “Welcome aboard, Cadet. You must be Emily James. Please have a seat.” Walking the three steps towards the replicator she continued, “Would you like something to eat or to drink?” And even though she smiled at the Cadet, there was a certain stiffness about the Chief Medical Officer.

“No, thank you.” Emily said in her light London accent. She sat down on the guest side of the CMO’s desk. She considered that some doctors were just cold and calculating by nature. Or by nurture.

OOC: I took the liberty to adjust the topic to keep track of which boarding eval the threads are. I hope you don’t mind.

IC:
Turning on her heels, Aizala walked back to her desk and sat down again, crossing her legs at the knees, her back perfectly straight. A small smile played across her face as she looked at Emily for a short moment before asking, “Why did you join Starfleet and why did you choose to become a doctor?” It was probably a fairly standard question, but nevertheless it was something she was sincerely interested in knowing about her cadets.

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

“I suppose the question should be reversed. I wanted to be a doctor before I wanted to join Starfleet. I’m not sure why, but doctor is always what I said when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. Later, I got a chance to job shadow a Starfleet Doctor. And that was a fascinating experience. So I decided to follow that path.”

Tija smiled softly as she listened to the Cadet and for a moment she just looked at her without saying anything. Eventually she asked, “Could you elaborate on that experience? What was so fascinating about it? What did you get to experience?”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

Emily ‘s eyes glazed over in memory. “We saw almost everything. Everyday human ailments, like appendicitis. Alien diseases, andorian shingles. We even saw a desimilated Borg drone. She had been feeling odd and came in do make sure everything was alright with the Borg implants remaining in her body.”

Tija watched James while the other woman was talking about her internship and a soft smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “That does sound like a wonderful and unique experience.” After falling silent for a couple of moments, she continued, “Have you already specialised in a certain field or is there are anything you’re most interested in? And what area do you feel you’re lacking in?”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

“I suppose I’d specialise in diagnostics. Surgery is my weak point. To me, that seems a natural balance.” Emily thought for a moment. “I would like to improve surgically, for emergencies, but hospitals do often have surgeons.”
