Adinah had regrets, and she rather thought most people had regrets. To err was to be human or something like that, although that should probably be expanded given that it wasn’t just humans anymore and hadn’t been for a while. But back to the main point, Adinah had regrets and her current one was that she hadn’t quadruple checked her DH’s name. What if she got it wrong or pronounced it wrong? What if her DH absolutely hated her?

“Dramatic,” Adinah huffed at herself, missing her roommate all the more since Adinah now had to tell herself she was being dramatic instead of having a close friend to do so.

“Just press the chime like a normal officer,” she reprimanded herself. Except, of course, she was a cadet and if she couldn’t even introduce herself to her DH she never would be anything more than a cadet.

With that dramatic thought in mind, Adinah pressed the chime and stepped back a bit, back straighter and body stiffer than it ever had been before.

OOC: Welcome aboard, Dane! That’s a great post and I’m really curious to get to know your character better. Don’t be surprised if Aizala comes across as distant at times. She is friendly and all, but tries to keep people as much at bay as possible. It’s nothing personal :)
Also, with our style post writing, you can always inserte parts of your posts between existing paragraphs, when and where it fits. Does that make sense?

Almost immediately after the chime rang, a voice from the other side of the door called, “Enter!”

Adinah perked up at the command, well as much as she could without her spine actually snapping from how strait it was, and eagerly awaited the opening of the doors, excited to meet her first ever DH.

As the doors swished open before her, Adinah would be able to see a smallish office. Most of the wall opposite the door was taken up by windows. Against the left hand wall stood a comfortable looking couch with a oval-shaped glass coffee table in front of it and two matching overstuffed armchairs on each side. Slightly to the right of the stood a desk at angle, facing mostly towards the door. Behind the desk was small bookshelf filled with books and a few ornaments. In front of the desk stood two identical chairs, facing the desk. Behind the desk sat a petite Bajoran woman. Her copper hair was tied back into a neat bun at the nape of her neck. Her face was covered in a number of pale brown, almost golden looking freckles and a gentle smile played across her lips and around her jade coloured eyes.

Adinah stepped into the room, overly careful about just how quick she was moving as she made her way in front of the desk. She stilled before her superior officer and for a second, but thankfully just a second, felt like her tongue was stuck to the roof of her mouth. “Cadet Gartenberg reporting for duty as order, sir.” She pulled up a salute as she did so and waited for the CMO to speak.

Rising to her feet, Tija Aizala gestured towards the chairs and said, “Welcome aboard, Cadet. You must be Adinah Goldenberg. Please have a seat.” Walking the three steps towards the replicator she continued, “Would you like something to eat or to drink?”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

Adinah relaxed her stance gratefully, slipping into the nearest seat next to the CMO’s desk with only slight hesitancy. It felt a bit odd sitting when her DH was standing, then again that was probably just the anxiety speaking.

“Some honeyed black tea would be amazing, Ma’am,” Adinah replied. It would also give her something to wrap her hands around or sip at if she got anxious and her throat dried up. Besides, she hadn’t had her proper caffeine this morning so it would be an extra bonus. The tea would make this all easier, Adinah was sure of it.

OOC: slip them between paragraphs like that?

OOC: Yes! And if you leave an empty line before and after the insert, it should be in the same colour (white) as the rest of your post.

With a nod, Tija turned around and ordered the tea for the Cadet and a glass of sparkling water for herself. With both beverages in her hands she walked back to her desk and placed the tea in front of Gartenberg and then sat down on her chair again. This being her first ever conversation with a cadet who was reporting for duty, she wasn’t sure how to do this best. What questions should she ask? And which should she ask first? So while deciding what to ask first, she took a sip off water and hoped that this wouldn’t be too awkward for both of them. Then she asked, “What made you join Starfleet and why did you choose medicine as you career?”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

Adinah wrapped her hands gratefully around the mug of tea as she thought how best to answer. She felt no immediate need to poor her heart out to her DH, actually she’d never really felt a need to be overly honest with any superior. She certainly wouldn’t lie about anything work related, but what her real desires and personal thoughts were had little importance in a professional setting, so Adinah settled on the half truths she’d given at the Academy before.

“Being a doctor was something I always dreamed of, Ma’am. I took care of my younger siblings as a child and really enjoyed it so I did think of some kind of caregiving job, but medicine called to me more. It allowed me to combine my fascination with the world, my desire to learn, and my passion for helping all into one,” Adinah smiled a bit, although if the CMO was particularly adept at reading emotions she might notice the slight bitter edge to it.

Tija took a sip of water as she listened quietly to the Cadet. While she was generally good at reading emotions, the slightly bitter edge in the other woman’s smile didn’t consiously register with her. She was to preoccupied with trying to focus on what she said and keeping her own emotions and memories at bay that arose when Gartenberg had mentioned her family.

In truth, Adinah had had little desire to be a doctor for most of her life. But she was good at it and could lose herself easily in the day to day tasks of medicine, so she’d fall into the profession and simply stuck with it.

“As for why Starfleet,” she began, this answer much less the truth but just as perfectly practiced as the previous, “it began as a simple fascination with the idea of the ‘other’ and the unknown. What could be more fun than traveling the galaxy and seeing things no one else ever has?” Adinah’s lips twitched slightly as she asked that question, remembering how her younger brother had once said nearly those exact same word to her, if with the grammatical structure and enthusiasm of a five year old.

Tija nodded in agreement and returned the smile.

“It easily developed from there back into a desire to help. I realize how stereotypical it is, but I’m rather okay with being a cliche. In truth I admire much of what other officers in Starfleet do, the new knowledge they bring back and the help they bring other people’s, so I’d like to do my part in keeping that all running.” Adinah finished her little speech with a slight shrug and sip of her tea. There was more to it than that, more desires that she firmly hid and other types of knowledge she’d learned to ignore wanting. Life was what it was and despite not being fully happy with it, she was rather content.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I suppose in one way or another we all are,” the CMO replied simply. She wasn’t really sure what else to say in reply to Cadet’s answers to her questions. So she decided to leave it at that and ask the next question instead. “Have you specialised in a certain area of medicine yet? Or is there one you would like to learn more about or even specialise in?”

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

Adinah bit her tongue on an immediate answer, swallowing the fact that she’d been thinking about psychology for ages because that was…less than irrelevant.

“Xenobiology with a focus on interspecies transmittable disease and infections,” Adinah stated instead, “it’s my focus so far. I moved past generalized xenobiological emergency practice.”

And how well Adinah remembered those horrible moments. The questions of life and death and the rush, rush, rush of every second costing another life. Sometimes the pressure still made her choke, something that had been soft in her dying every time she had to make decisions like that.

“I’ve always been fascinated in the many similarities between species,” Adinah stated instead of any of the words caught on her tongue. It was better.

Aizala watched Adinah closely. She had the slightly feeling that - just like herself - the other woman was holding things back. And while it wasn’t that she didn’t care, she respected the privacy of her colleagues; as long as it didn’t interfere with their capability to perform their duties. And she didn’t suspect that that would be the case with her. So she didn’t poke and instead simply nodded here and there while listening closely and giving her time to say as much as she wanted to share. Thus she didn’t respond immediately to Adinah’s answer, but waited a moment to see if there was anything she wanted to add. Eventually she said, “Xenobiology is always a great area to focus on and I don’t think we have anyone in the department with a focus on interspecies transmittable diseases and infections.”

Tilting her head slightly to the side, the CMO pondered for a moment before asking, “Which species and which diseases and or infections do you find most interesting or intriguing?” While it didn’t really matter what she was most interested in, Aizala was sincerely curious about it. Not to mention that that was the type of personal question she felt comfortable asking, for she she was asked the same question in return, she would be willing to answer it.

~Lt. Tija, Asst. CMO

“I work mostly on more humanoid species, so Vulcan, Human, Andorian, and the like. I’m looking to expand that, of course, and my disease focus are the high-plague risk diseases. Anything that spreads quickly and can hop species tends to be on my radar. Think most mass effective.” Adinah replied easily. She’d been feeling a bit frustrated with her lack of knowledge in more ‘obscure’ Federation species.

“Would you mind terribly if I turned the question back to you? I know the basics about you Lieutenant, I’m sure most people do about their DH, but I’d love to learn more specifics.” Adinah folded her hands in her lap gently, her cup resting carefully before her on the desk. This wasnt so nerve wracking as she’d worried it might be.
