Korczak waved off the last statement. “No apologies needed. And if you find joy in things others don’t… well… it’s a very large universe. Different individuals will find joy in different ways. So where, or in what setting, do you find joy, Lieutenant?”

Korczak, CNS

“Thank you, Sir,” Tija replied with a small smile. After a short pause she continued, “I enjoy solitude and quiet. I also enjoy reading medical journals. And I make sure I have some time every day for meditation and prayer and exercising. I found that I particularly enjoy the human practice of yoga.” Even to herself this sounded somewhat boring, especially considering that her days had an almost rigorous structure. Everything she did, she did at exactly the same time every day. The only exception were times of medical emergencies.

Korczak nodded and said “Those seem like quite appropriate pastimes for someone dealing with daily amounts of stress, as we in the medical field often do. I would caution you, however, to try and not completely isolate yourself during off hours. Not only is company good for one’s own mental health, it would behoove you in your role of a Department Head to make yourself accessible to your staff for on-duty related matters.”

Tija had been afraid that he’d say that. After all, it wasn’t the first time that someone told her (though not always as directly) that she should spend more time around people. A soft sigh escaped her lips and for a brief moment a hint of resignation played across her pale features. “I know, I should … for all the reasons you just mentioned,” she admitted, “yet socializing … it never came easy to me and always puts me on edge … I feel like I don’t have the energy for it after a long shift. And …” Her cheeks turned a faint scarlet. “I’m no good at small-talk.”

“So start somewhere you can find a base of comfort. Perhaps a weekly meeting with medical and science officers to go over any interesting research you may have found. An informal Challenger Science and medical-slash-science discussion group. You could invite anyone from any section to participate. New faces and an already predetermined topic of conversation would minimize the need for ‘small talk’ while also putting you in a framework of engaging with others, but in a limited timeframe.” and he paused and looked away as if in thought. “It would be good for the Cadets as well. A way to meet others outside their own small work groups. Yes, I think that may be a good idea. How do you feel about it, Lieutenant?”

Korczak, CNS

Tija tilted her head to the left and was silent for a moment before she asked, “Basically it’s doing something … difficult in a setting that makes me feel safe?” While nodding and without giving Korczak the chance to reply, she continued, “I can see myself giving that a try. And all your suggestions are logical and I can see their merits.” As soon as the last word was spoken, her eyes became unfocused and she started to go through possibilities and make various lists in her mind; whom to invite, what to discuss, times and locations, …

Korczak watched her and a slight upturn of the corner of his mouth was the only indication of acknowledgement. “And if you think it helpful, I am happy to participate. I am, after all, a member of the both Medical and Science departments. But if you would like to do so on your own, I ask only that you speak with me about your… endeavors.”

Korczak, CNS

Tija blinked a couple of times as she returned to the present and it then took her another short moment to fully grasp what Korczak had said. “I’m sorry, I got lost in thought. But thank you for the offer. I’d like that, I think.” Tilting her head slightly to the side, she added, “I know the Challenger has 5 briefing rooms and a conference room for diplomatic missions. When not in use, do you think the Captain would be opposed to the idea of the medical and science department to use them for something like a internal symposium?”
